Neck Pickup (Gibson490R)
The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. It was an interpretation of the blues that hadn't been heard before, and it was much harder, more rocking, and louder than anything else before it. As such, this new genre's players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup that could split coils through a push/pull knob and prevent microphonic feedback from occurring when the volumes were turned up to maximum levels. Gibson answered this call with the introduction of the revolutionary 490T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm), which has the traditional characteristics of the original "Patent Applied For" pickups, but with two key modifications. First, a four-conductor wiring scheme allows the 490s to be connected to any push/pull knob, which lets players split the coils and increase versatility. Gibson also introduced wax potting, which does away with any air space, minimalizing microphonic feedback. The 490R is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The 490T bridge pickup is calibrated to match the 490R, with pole pieces aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.
• Output: 7.4
• Position: Neck
• Magnet: Alnico II
Bridge Pickup (Gibson 490T)
Gibson Accessories’ 490T Modern Classic bridge humbucker pickup features tonal characteristics that are similar to the company’s popular ’57 Classic but with a slight increase in the upper midrange for a more aggressive feel. It’s 100% pure humbucker but with a modern edge that delivers a more contemporary tonal range. It’s a testament to the 490T’s versatility that Sweetwater guitarists of all stripes have voiced their approvals over this flexible humbucker’s ability to cover everything from soulful cleans to brutal breakdowns. However, there is one area in which we found that the 490T really excels: loud, energetic rock ’n’ roll! Looking for a full, rich neck pickup to pair with the 490T? Its spaced pole pieces are perfectly calibrated to match Gibson Accessories’ 490R. Finally, both of Gibson’s 490-style pickups employ Alnico II magnets for a super-smooth frequency response up and down the entire fingerboard.Volume Controls
The Explorer uses an individual volume control for each pickup, which consists of a quality 300k linear potentiometer for a smooth, natural volume roll-off.
• Output: 8.2
• Position: Bridge
• Magnet: Alnico II
Tone Controls
The Explorer features a master tone control comprised of 300k non-linear potentiometers with.022mF tone capacitors for a smooth transition from bright to warm.
Toggle Switch
The Explorer features one three-way Switchcraft toggle switch. In the down position, only the bridge pickup is active. In the middle position, both pickups are active. In the up position, only the neck pickup is active.
Output Jack
The guitar features a 1⁄4” output jack made by Switchcraft. Its super heavy-duty construction holds your guitar cable securely in place.
Tuning Keys (Modified to Grover Locking)
The headstock of the Explore is equipped with Grover Locking tuners with Kidney Bean buttons and an efficient 14:1 turn ratio. These tuners provide a classic look in line with the model’s lineage, and smooth, robust performance.
Bridge
In 1954, Gibson revolutionized guitar hardware when it debuted the Tune-o-matic bridge, setting a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered. Included on the Explorer, the Tune-o-matic provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields excellent coupling between strings and body, maximizing resonance, tone, and sustain. This bridge is made from Zamak then plated in chrome, and each one weighs approximately .118 lbs.
Tailpiece
Every Tune-o-matic bridge is combined with a separate “stop bar” tailpiece, which is essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge that’s designed to further enhance the connection between the strings and the body. The Exploders’ stop bar tailpiece is made from Zamak then plated in chrome, and each one weighs approximately .24 lbs.
Pickguard (Modified to Black)
The Explore carries the traditional black pickguard.
