Pono MTDX8 Eight String Mahogany Tenor Deluxe Ukulele w/ Hardshell Case. Originally $700; the separately purchased O'ahu Hard Shell Tenor Ukulele Case was $100.
This model appears to be discontinued. Pono tends to switch out their woods and other features frequently compared to other ukulele manufacturers.
Used in one recording session but otherwise not played much. I bought it during COVID when I had to move around a lot, avoiding duplication of what was in storage and hoping it would serve well as a mandolin stand-in for the session.
Not really like a mandolin, due to the tuning and nylon vs. steel strings. It's a nice sound but I don't use it enough to justify keeping it, and I get impatient quickly when tuning so many strings.
Pono is a top-end manufacturer of ukuleles. This is one of the higher 8-string models available from any manufacturer. Good construction overall, and the action is easy on the fingers (especially compared to mandolin).
Note that the strings are discontinued and were simply a special gauge set made by D'addario for Ko'olau. When the time comes, you could buy the closest matched set from D'addario or (my recommendation) try an 8-string set from Kamaka, who I think make their own strings. I just this week put Kamaka strings on my concert ukulele and love them!
Note that the 8-string Ukulele uses octave-doubling on the lower two courses and unison doubling on the upper two courses, making it a bit of a hybrid between a Low G ukulele and a traditional reentrant tuning model.
