Kala KA-ASCP-T Cedar/Pau Ferro Slotted Tenor Ukulele w/ Hardshell Case, barely used, originally $500 for the ukulele and $100 for the O'ahu Hard Shell Tenor Ukulele Case.
I bought this as compensation during COVID when I was job-hopping across the country and had all my regular instruments in long-term storage. I held onto it until my high-end Kiwaya Concert Ukulele finally came back in stock recently, as it has its own sound compared to my other ukuleles, but now I don't need it as the Kiwaya model sounds very similar (but is more pro).
Although on the lower end of intermediate models price-wise, this is every bit a professional model and is one of the hidden secrets of the ukulele world, touted as a bargain by those in the know (including ukulele specialty sites). The finish is absolutely stunning but doesn't come out as great in photos due to the glare of afternoon light. It reminds me of my Brasilian cavaquinho in its workmanship and decor.
I recently restrung this ukulele using the tenor fluorocarbon set from Savarez, well-known as the best maker of classical guitar strings. It is a great match for this ukulele; it had D'addarios previously and it's a world of difference. They aren't fully broken in yet though, so you may have some tuning slippage at first, as is typical of fresh ukulele strings.
I prefer slotted headstocks on nylon string instruments as I find them easier to string up and get into tune compared to flat headstocks. It is extremely rare to see a slotted headstock in this price range.
Pau Ferro is Protuguese for Ironwood and it's a common wood in Brasil that has similar properties to Rosewood. Combined with the cedar top, and the Savarez strings, it makes this ukulele speak with the articulateness and warmth of a requinto classical guitar.
