This Gretsch 6128TDS Duo Jet was made in Japan’s Terada factory in 2006. It’s nearly identical to the much more expensive George Harrison signature model, but without the upcharge for George’s name. In fact, this guitar has a few nice features that set it above the Harrison signature.
With a chambered mahogany body and maple top, this guitar weighs in at a svelte 6 pounds, 15.3 ounces. It’s lightweight and tuneful, with the extra resonance that comes from the chambers.
The mahogany neck has a beautiful, dark rosewood fretboard with a 12” radius. Terada pulled off a nice trick here, making the pearloid “Alamo” fret markers look like they have yellowed with age. Again, you won’t see that on current Japanese Gretsches. The open gear tuners look classy and hold tune very well.
The star of the show, here, is the pickup choice. A previous owner sprung for some Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Dynasonic pickups. They are not cheap, but these are the most accurate reproductions of d’Armond Dynasonics that I have found. I had a vintage set (mid-1950s) on a Guild that sounded nearly identical to these.
The unpotted Seymour Duncans faithfully reproduce the classic Dynasonic sparkle while remaining full and glassy. The neck and bridge position have distinct voices that allow the player to cover a variety of tones. Independent bridge and neck pickup volumes interact with a no-load master tone control with Squeezebox capacitor. All of this runs into a master volume with treble bleed circuit.
The Bigsby B6 sports a Duane Eddy handle. I have a spare Chet Atkins handle that I will pack in the case. The space control bridge allows for frequent Bigsby warbles without going out of tune.
As you would expect with a 20 year old guitar, the body shows some surface swirls in the finish. The pickguard has some pick wear and little marks where the retaining nut sits on the bracket. All of this merely adds to the vintage appeal of this beauty. The frets are in great shape. The fretboard is immaculate. No dings, scratches, or repairs: this guitar has been treated like she deserves.
I will ship in the original hard shell case. Rest easy knowing that your guitar will be carefully and securely packed and shipped with tracking. Please message me with any questions.
