This is a new hand-built, JFET transformer-balanced, side-address cardioid condenser microphone, designed by MicParts, the Northern California audiophile mic shop. Built into a newly painted Focusrite Scarlett CM25 donor body, all the EXF1’s internal parts are new, including the circuit board, using carefully selected premium audio components.

The microphone pairs the EXF1 Neumann KM84–inspired circuit with the TSB–2555B medium-diaphragm (26-mm) electret capsule, praised by DIY audiophiles for clean sound, high output, and smooth frequency response. The combination produces a remarkably versatile studio-quality microphone with a vintage transformer sound, at far less than the price of comparable retail mics. The mic’s T6.5 transformer produces a smooth, flat frequency response from 20Hz to beyond 20kHz, with musical and predictable harmonic coloration.

The EXF1 circuit draws upon the vintage German Neumann KM84 transformer-balanced design used in the legendary Neumann U87 Ai microphone. It uses 1% tolerance resistors, low-noise electrolytic capacitors, polypropylene signal caps, and NOS transistors, including a low-capacitance JFET that is manually biased for this circuit to handle the highest possible SPL with minimal distortion. Moreover, the EXF1 circuit includes an internally switchable –10dB pad for recording high-SPL sources. The circuit will saturate under moderate SPL to capture harmonically rich sound. It has a mild compression effect that gently attenuates transients, which can make drum tracks easier to mix.

This audiophile microphone produces richer tone, fuller bass, smoother response, higher output, and more accurate transient response than others in its price bracket. This microphone will not disappoint. The design and components are comparable to the MicParts T–25 microphone ($349 retail). This is the last EXF1 currently in stock.

If you are interested in turning your entry level (MXL, AKG, Audio Technica, Scarlett Focusrite, Studio Projects) microphone into a serious recording instrument, message us regarding that possibility.
