Item Description
Serial: 220324 Listed 10 months ago
This is a Buescher 400 Special Bb wood clarinet, an intermediate-level model produced by Selmer USA for Buescher before Selmer’s acquisition of the Buescher Musical Instrument Co. in the 1960s. After the acquisition, this line eventually evolved into the Selmer USA Signet series.

The 400 Special is a best-kept secret among clarinetists — especially popular with jazz players for its broad, resonant, projecting tone. Some players regard these as even better built than the early Signet models, though that claim is more anecdotal than documented.

This clarinet has been completely restored and plays great with a clear, robust sound. The bore measures 15.0mm (~0.591") at the top entry and 14.7mm (~0.579") at the exit of the top joint, giving an overall average of 14.85mm (~0.584"). The bore and wood have been oiled inside and out.

The clarinet was fully repadded: the top joint with long-lasting blue leather pads, the bottom joint with double-bladder pads. All tenon corks have been replaced where needed, and every tenon is capped with metal — a hallmark of higher-quality clarinets. The keys have been machine-polished and hand-finished.

The wood is in good condition for its age, with no cracks or repaired cracks. As expected for a clarinet of this vintage, there are surface scratches, blemishes, and logo wear, but all cosmetic only.
