The S3-87 is a world-class FET condenser multi-pattern mic suitable for all studio sources. It pairs the proprietary MicParts RK-87 capsule with a re-engineered Schoeps-style circuit built with premium audiophile components.
The TL3 circuit, built on two high-quality PCBs, is a next-generation implementation of the transformerless design pioneered by Schoeps. It features two external switches: polar pattern (Cardioid, Omni, Figure-8) and a -10dB pad.
The circuit uses polypropylene signal caps, low-noise electrolytic capacitors, and 1% tolerance audio-grade, low-noise quality, NOS transistors. The S3-87 features a low-capacitance JFET, individually selected and manually biased to handle high SPL with minimal distortion.
This combination produces higher output, lower self-noise, and lower distortion than the current production Neumann U87 Ai, and has 12-15dB higher output than the older U87i. (The various so-called "U87 clone" DIY kits, which use knockoff "crapsules" sold on Ebay and other 3rd-party websites, don't come close.)
The S3-87 has a neutral, un-hyped, uncolored tone, well suited to voiceover, vocals, Foley, drums, and guitars. Comes with a metal-frame elastic shock mount and a padded flight case. This mic is pristine, fully tested but otherwise unused.
