Eastman E20P-SB 12-Fret Parlor Traditional Acoustic Guitar (“0” Concert Size) with Eastman hardshell case and optional extra strings. Never gigged or exposed to smoke, just used in some studio work. I take great care of all my instruments.
This is an excellent parlor guitar and it is rare to find Adirondack Spruce aka Red Spruce on a guitar that cost less than $2000. As many people know, Red Spruce is a much cherished top wood that gave way to Sitka Spruce from Alaska's Panhandle when it became rare. Most of what is used now, is NOS (New Old Stock), meaning it has also cured for years.
This is a deep body instrument, like most parlor guitars, but doesn't have an overly exaggerated waist. I'm not sure if it is trying to emulate a specific vintage model, but I would say it is more likely that it is emulating Martin than Gibson as it also sounds a bit like a Santa Cruz parlor guitar and I think that boutique brand goes for the Martin vibe.
The sunburst top is especially beautiful, looking like a varnished guitar of yore.
I bought extra guitars while moving from job to job, and coast to coast, during COVID, and I am more productive when I have just a few instruments to focus on, so I whittled my remaining acoustic guitars down to three essential models this past weekend, yet I hemmed and hawed about this one as it was also my first high end acoustic guitar purchase.
It is nice to have the slotted headstock, which also makes the instrument lighter.
I have tried many strings on this instrument and ultimately settled on the Eric Clapton Phosphor Bronze set from Martin. I find those strings to eliminate squeak even though they aren't Silk & Steel, and they work well for finger-style and plectrum, for lead and light strumming, but parlor guitars are rarely ideal for strumming.
There may be some light checking on the polyurethane surface as Eastman uses a thicker coat than Martin and some other brands and the coast to coast journey in a POD, while climate controlled, may still have introduced some minor changes in humidity along the route. Any checking, if present, should show in the photos. I have poor vision, so I do the best I can with sharpening tools in photo apps in case something missed my eye.
These sell new for around $1700 new, with the hardshell case. This is a handcrafted guitar, on the level of most current Martins that are just under $2000, but different from what they currently offer as Martin rarely makes parlor guitars anymore. The lowest I've seen these for used, in fairly bad condition, is $850, with no case either. They don't show up often, so I am having to guess at a fair used price for one that is in excellent condition based on their more common "00" models.
