Gibson J-100 Xtra Super Jumbo Acoustic Guitar (“F” Jumbo Size) w/ Gibson Hardshell Case.
NOTE: It looks like U-haul now sells guitar shipping boxes, so I may be able to make this a non-local sale soon if I order some, but right now my time is tied up with new tenants moving in.
This is an ultra rare edition, with bubinga wood in place of the usual maple that is found on most Gibson (and other brand) jumbo guitars. I personally find maple too bright sounding, so was interested how this lovely African hardwood would work on a jumbo acoustic, as I had had bass guitars in bubinga wood in the past, and some world instruments as well.
Based on the serial number, this model appears to have been built in 2005.
The only caveats I have on condition is that there is a barely detectable surface nick on the back side, which I tried to capture in a closeup, and some even more minor "checking" on the heavy polyurethane finish on the top -- something that many people think improves the sound and is inevitable with age, but in my case is the result of moving from California to Virginia and going through a lot of climate zones along the way, in mid-summer. Very shallow surface-only, not in the wood.
As I found this used at Guitar Center in Concord CA, I don't know its original price, and it is rare so it doesn't show up used very often. I have tried to find similar specs for measuring the used value, but it's tough. Sometimes rare stuff goes through the roof, and at other times, the demand isn't present either because guitarists tend to be conservative and traditional or they just have never heard of the model (which was the case for me, but I got to try it in the store and was hooked!).
At any rate, I did find four of these for sale currently, with the one on the auction site being an insane $2600 and the ones on Reverb being a bit over $1800 to $1900, so I am posting mine for just a bit below that.
The problem with this guitar for me is that I recently developed arthritis in the right hand, so I don't have the strength anymore for CLEAN playing of fast chords (Pete Townshend style) on an oversized guitar. I really like this guitar for single-note playing, but have plenty of acoustic guitars and feel the smaller bodies record better in the studio, so am reluctantly giving this one up.
I had this strung up with Rotosound JK12 80/20 Jumbo King strings for awhile as those are often recommended for Gibson Jumbos, and those strings do improve the balance and the sound, as well as the feel, of the guitar significantly, but I couldn't get another set in time for this sale so I restrung it with D'addario's newest super-light coated strings, which also work well on this guitar and are slightly lighter than thew Rotosounds.
