Here are resources from the IRS to help you understand tax reporting requirements for online marketplaces:
$20,000 Reporting Threshold
Online marketplaces such as Gear Exchange will be required to report tax year 2025 transactions to the IRS for sellers with more than $20,000 in sales and over 200 transactions. We are also required by the IRS to send a copy of the form to the taxpayer by January 31.
Gear Exchange was required to report tax year 2024 transactions to the IRS for sellers with more than $5,000 in sales. This requirement was enacted as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. (see Sec. 9674) Learn more from the official IRS announcement here: IR-2023-221, Nov. 21, 2023
Since 2021, the IRS has been taking a phased in approach to implementation of the Form 1099-K reporting threshold. In 2025, the IRS rolled back the lower thresholds introduced under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Valid Taxpayer ID Required
In order to file 1099-K, the following US Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) are accepted:
- A federal Employer Identification Number (EIN),
- A federal Social Security Number (SSN), or
- An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
