You must have your devices correctly defined in FM for PLM to behave predictably. Remember, older synths that do not respond to MIDI Bank Select messages will usually only give you access to one bank via MIDI.

Here is a step-by-step description of how to get PLM working for you so that all of your patches show up in the sequencer’s Patch columns:

I. DEFINE DEVICES IN THE FREEMIDI DEVICES WINDOW OF PATCHLIST MANAGER

As mentioned before, PLM will not work if your devices are not defined correctly in FreeMIDI. So be sure this has been done before continuing.

In PLM, go to the FreeMIDI Devices window. If the device does not show up in this window, go to the mini-menu, and select “choose devices”, and select (darken) the device that you want to add. If there is a default patchlist for the device, it will appear in the Patch Lists window in PLM. If that is the case, you may be done.

II. GETTING THE PATCH LISTS FOR YOUR DEVICES

PLM may not contain the current default patchlists for your device. Also, if you have changed the RAM (user-definable) patches in your device, the PLM default patchlists will not match the patches in your device.

If you have Unisyn, do this: In Unisyn, load a bank from your device. Then go to PLM and select the device in the FreeMIDI devices window. Choose “Load FreeMIDI Patch Lists” from the mini menu. The bank should then show up in the Patch Lists window. Do the same operation with Unisyn and PLM for each bank of the device until you have the patchlists you need.

If you do not own Unisyn, you may be able to get a bank dump from the device from within PLM. Select the device in the FreeMIDI Devices window and choose “Get Bank Dump”. Only a handful of devices support this. This function only works if the Device ID# in FreeMIDI’s Device Specification window matches the devices actual Device ID#.

IIa. TYPING YOUR OWN PATCHLISTS

If none of the above options work for you, the patch lists may have to be typed in. This is the case when your device has no default patchlist available in PLM, and also when you have no other way to enter your device’s bank patchlist. Manually typing a patchlist is not fun but it works. Here’s how:

In PLM, go to the Patch Lists window. In the mini menu choose “Add Patch List”. Click in the length column to make the bank the correct length for the number of patches in the banks of your device. Also enter the correct numbering system.

Then add one patchlist for each additional bank of sounds that the device contains. You can do this by selecting your first patchlist and choosing “duplicate” from the mini-menu. Then rename each patchlist to correspond to the banks in the device.

Now you have to type the names of the patches for each patchlist into their corresponding positions in each bank. Do it carefully, because if you get off by one number or leave a patch out, you may have to repeat a lot of your work to correct your error.

Once you’re finished typing, you can leave each bank separate or you can place them in a folder. If you choose to place the banks in a folder, go to the mini-menu in the Patch List window and choose “add folder”. Name the folder “SE-1 Patchlists” or something descriptive. For more on folders, etc., see next section:

III. ASSIGNING THE PATCHLISTS TO YOUR DEVICE

Sometimes the patchlists are present in PLM’s Patch List window but still don’t show up in the sequencer’s patch column. The following will help assure that things are set up correctly:

Look in the FreeMIDI devices window in PLM. Press the arrow to the left of the device name to open the list of MIDI channels used in that device. These channels correspond to the receive channels you have defined for the device in FM. If don’t find the MIDI channels that you expect here, go to FreeMIDI Setup and edit the receive channels for the device.

Still in the FreeMIDI devices window in PLM, click and hold in the Patch Lists column next to the first MIDI channel. You will see all of the Patchlists and folders that you have entered in the Patch List window. Select the folder or patchlist that you want to be accessed by that MIDI channel.

If you want that particular channel to access all of the patchlists you’ve defined for the device, make sure all of these patchlists are in a folder in PLM’s Patchlist window, and select that folder to be used by this device MIDI channel. If you want the channel to have access to only one patchlist, such as a drum channel, leave that patchlist out of the folder and select only that patchlist.

IV. BANK SELECT

When you configure a device in PLM with its defaults, the bank numbers of the patchlists usually are set up automatically. However, when you type your own patchlists or have configuring problems you may need to enter the bank numbers manually.

This is done in PLM’s Patch List window. Refer to your synth’s user manual to find the correct bank numbers. It would probably be in the MIDI chapter somewhere. When you’re done assigning the banks, they might look something like this:

Name

Length

Bank

Used

User RAM bank 1 128 80/0 x
User RAM bank 2 128 80/1 x
RAM Cartridge 1 128 80/2 x
ROM bank 1 128 80/3 x
ROM bank 2 128 81/0 x
Expansion Card 1 128 81/1 x
Expansion Card 2 128 81/2 x
Drums 30 0/0 x

This gets pretty complicated. The standard formats of bank select are Controller #0, Controller #32, both Controller #0 and #32, patch changes above 100, or SysEx messages. When using #0, #32 or both, in the Bank Select dialog box, bank select properties must be defined correctly in FreeMIDI’s Device Specification window for Bank Select Formats One Number or Two Numbers to function properly.

To define program change strings or SysEx strings for bank select, use the Set MIDI Message dialog box. These will require referring to the synth’s user’s manual. If in doubt, refer to the pertinent chapters in the Performer or DP manual since it covers the procedures in much further depth.

You can confirm if you’ve done everything correctly by going to your sequencer (Performer or DP) and click and hold in the default patch column for one of the devices MIDI channels in the Tracks window. You should see all of the patchlists that are assigned to that MIDI channel in PLM. If you select a patch and the correct one appears in that channel in your synth, then you have done everything right. If not, you didn’t!

Possible mistakes:

1. Typing the wrong patch names in the wrong location
2. Wrong bank select numbers in the Patch Lists window in the BANK column
3. Incorrect assignments of the folders or patchlists in the FreeMIDI Devices window’s PATCH LIST column.

[34122

20986,22532
33566

<meta property="og:description" content="Q: How do I set up PatchList Manager so that I can select my synth’s patches from the Patch columns in Performer or DP?
