If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMC may resolve it. The SMC controls several functions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.<\/li>\n<li>Handling system resets from various commands.<\/li>\n<li>Controlling the fans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>:&nbsp;Resetting the SMC does not reset the PRAM and will not resolve issues in which your computer is unresponsive. In these situations, restarting your computer will generally suffice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Important\" style=\"background: #f2b3b3; padding: 5px 15px; border-radius: 0px; clear: both; margin-top: 5px;\">\n<p style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Before an SMC Reset&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Force Quit all apps (Option-Command-Escape).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Restart your Mac (Control-Command-Power).<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Force Shut Down your Mac (press the power button for 10 seconds).<\/p>\n<p>Resetting the SMC can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so forth. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues after you&#8217;ve restarted the computer, try resetting the SMC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to Reset SMC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Instructions\" style=\"background: #F4F4F4; padding: 5px 15px; border-radius: 0px; clear: both; margin-top: 5px;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left; font-size: 180%; font-weight: bold; color: #143b74;\">Reset SMC&nbsp;for Mac&nbsp;laptops with a&nbsp;removable battery<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Learn about removing the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT204054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">battery on&nbsp;MacBook&nbsp;and&nbsp;MacBook Pro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Shut down the computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it&#8217;s connected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Remove the battery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Release the power button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Press the power button to turn on the computer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Instructions\" style=\"background: #F4F4F4; padding: 5px 15px; border-radius: 0px; clear: both; margin-top: 5px;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left; font-size: 180%; font-weight: bold; color: #143b74;\">Reset SMC&nbsp;for&nbsp;Mac laptops with a non-removable battery<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>:&nbsp;<em>Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own&nbsp;include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Shut down the computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Press the power button to turn on the computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The LED&nbsp;on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"Instructions\" style=\"background: #F4F4F4;
