Below are possible solutions to error messages -9073 & -6042 when working in Pro Tools on Windows 98SE and\/or ME. <\/p>\n
1. PCI too busy (DAE -6042), -9073 on Win 98 SE Systems with Digi 001 and Pro Tools LE.<\/p>\n
The first BIOS release of the Epox 7KXA Mainboard for Athalon with VIA KX133 Chipset was prone to this.
There is a BIOS-Update available on http:\/\/www.epox.com\/html\/english\/support\/motherboard\/bios\/694x.htm
This fixed the problems and increased the performance dramatically.<\/p>\n
2. DAE error message “-9073 – Disk too slow or too fragmented” on a Digi 001 with Pro Tools LE 5.01 for Windows 98 and a SEAGATE BARRACUDA IDE hard disk.
The hard disk is not set to DMA or U-DMA mode.
Newer IDE drives provide the fast Ultra-DMA-mode capability.
This mode may be jumpered on the hard disk itself or controlled by a configuration utility shipped with the hardware. The standard configuration is (up to now) the U-DMA-33 mode, as the U-DMA capability’s also related to the mainboards IDE controller.<\/p>\n
Especially Seagate drives need a specific utility to be modified (there aren’t any jumpers on the rear of the HD to change the DMA mode).<\/p>\n
The utility can be downloaded from Seagates website:

Select the ULTRA ATA CONFIGURATION UTILITY to download the program.<\/p>\n
Double-click on the file to start it and set the UDMA 66 mode.
This utility can be also used to switch the HD back to the standard mode when it should be used on older CPU’s.

3. Pro Tools LE 5.1 (Win ME) won’t start playing back and quits with the error message DAE -9019 (system held up interrupts too long). Sometimes DAE -9073 (disk too slow or too fragmented) is posted.<\/p>\n
Beside any hardware related restrictions, it’s usually up to Windows how the Volume Cache (Disk Caching) is handled.
On Windows 98\/ME, the data will be read from any disk into the RAM, then flushed back to the swap file if the data is too big to be stored into the RAM.<\/p>\n
A workaround is:
1) Open the SYSTEM.INI (Windows Root Directory)
2) Scroll to the [VCACHE] entry (usually, no entry below)
3) Enter MAXFILECACHE=2000 as default value
4) Save the file and restart
This prevents the continuos swap of cache data between RAM and HD. <\/p>\n
