1. Make sure that You have downloaded the very latest drivers for the audio card that You are using from the audio cards manufacturers web site. Do not settle with the ones included on a CDROM in the actual interface package, chances are that these are old and obsolete. Some manufacturers publish new drivers labeled Beta-drivers, make sure that You are able to see these as well on the website.<\/p>\n
2. If Your audio card has ASIO drivers, be sure to put these in the ASIO driver folder that is inside the Reason folder on Your hard drive. ASIO drivers are essential in order to get the maximum performance from Reason and other music applications.<\/p>\n
3. If ASIO drivers are not available for Your sound card, Direct X is the next best choice.<\/p>\n
4. If You use a Digi 001 audio interface on a Mac system, download this ASIO driver (ftp:\/\/ftp.steinberg.net\/download\/mac\/hardware\/ASIO_DigiDesign_DirectIO5.sit.hqx) , unstuff it and place it in the Reason\/ASIO driver folder and select it in Reasons audio preferences. XP users will find a similar ASIO driver at http.\/\/www.digidesign.com.<\/p>\n
5. If an audio driver appears in the Reason preferences Audio tab with a red cross next to it, chances are that this driver is already in use by another application that cannot share the driver with Reason. Quit that application or check if there is a Run in Background option in the preferences for this other application and activate this.<\/p>\n
6. A red cross can also appear if there are duplicates of a audio driver, like e.g. if You have managed to install several of the Apple Sound Manager driver, which can happen if You haven’t been aware of language versions etc. Do a system wide search for the audio drivers name (or something similar so You can see all the possible iterations in the search result) and delete the oldest driver of the duplicates. Restart the computer after this and try again.<\/p>\n
7. If Reason suddenly hangs during a otherwise successful session, this might be because it has lost the connection with the audio interface. Check for new drivers for the audio interface. If the audio interface is a USB interface, make sure that nothing gets in the way on the actual USB connection – do not share the USB Audio interface with mice, keyboards etc. You might also try to power the audio interface from an external power supply, rather than using the USB itself as the power source.<\/p>\n
8. If the playback of a Reason song is “jumpy” or distorted in any way, this is related to the audio driver. On some system, even if You have a very powerful CPU, even some of the more advanced Demo Songs might produce this. Chances are that You have a audio card that has only Direct X (or even worse, MME drivers) and that this combination of the audio card and drivers puts so much load on the computer that playback will be erratic. Laptop users with a built-in audio card on the mother board and Windows XP users with a Soundblaster might experience this. The only thing that You can do in Reason itself in order to minimize these artifacts – apart from acquiring a better audio card with proper ASIO drivers or increasing the buffers in Reason Audio preferences – is to un-check the Use High resolution samples option in Reasons preferences and also fold in the units in the Reason rack that You are not tweaking at the moment. This is especially true for the Reason Mixer, where a lot of flashing leds can put a load on the computer. Note: this has been optimized in the Reason 2.01 update.<\/p>\n
9. If You can only hear audio from the first unit You create, and not the following ones, chances are that You have forgotten to create a Mixer as the very first unit in the Reason rack.
