They both use the Blackstar BEAM app for iPhone and Android. So, we\u2019ve written one guide for both units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beam Solo is a stereo headphone amp. You plug its 1\/4-inch jack directly into your guitar or bass, and you connect your wired headphones, or optionally headphones with a headset microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beam Mini is a practice amp with stereo speakers that sits on your desk. Connect it to your guitar with an instrument cable with a 1\/4-inch plug and listen through the speakers. Just like the Beam Solo, you can also connect headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the Beam Solo and the Beam Mini also function as a 4-in\/4-out audio interface over a USB-C cable for recording to your DAW on your computer or mobile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you connect headphones with an integrated headset mic, then you can sing along with your guitar playing or narrate a streaming session or podcast with both your guitar and your voice transmitted over the USB connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Register-Your-Purchase,-Download-the-Manuals\">Register Your Purchase, Download the Manuals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Warranty Registration<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the box, you\u2019ll find a QR code to go to the Blackstar website. Fill in all the details, including entering your product\u2019s serial number and uploading a PDF or photo of your receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Beam Mini Includes Ableton Live Lite<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you purchased the Beam Mini, then you are entitled to a license for Ableton Live Lite for macOS or Windows. When you see the Ableton Product Registration window, click on \u201cregister now.\u201d Fill out the Ableton Live Lite Registration application form and submit it to be provided with the Ableton Live Lite serial number\/activation code \u2014 you won\u2019t be able to use the software without it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a link on the page to download the installer from the Ableton website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Download the Owner\u2019s Manuals<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Welcome page for your unit, download the <strong>Quick Start Guide<\/strong> chart and the <strong>Handbook<\/strong> (owner\u2019s manual). Tap the button to enter Bluetooth pairing mode for audio streaming. See the <a href=\"#Connecting-Your-Blackstar-Beam-Amp-to-the-App-on-Your-Phone\">section on the Blackstar BEAM app<\/a> below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>1\/4-inch Guitar Input<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Beam Solo, flip out the 1\/4-inch plug and insert it into the output jack on your guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Beam Mini, connect an instrument cable from your guitar to the 1\/4-inch jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Headphones<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1\/8-inch jack accepts a TRS plug for stereo headphones or a TRRS plug for headphones with an inline microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When using headphones, go to the BEAM app. Under \u201cAudio Settings,\u201d you can adjust the Headphone Damping control to attenuate the upper harmonic frequencies to get the best sound through your headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When recording vocals using headphones with an inline microphone, use the BEAM app to turn the Mic input on or off, set the Headset Mic Level, and set a level of \u201ccomfort\u201d reverb for monitoring your voice in the headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>USB-C<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a USB-C cable to a 5-volt charger (not included) to charge the internal battery. You can use the unit while the USB-C cable is attached to a charger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a USB-C data cable to your macOS or Windows computer \u2014 or to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device \u2014 for using the Beam unit as an audio interface for recording to your DAW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>SpeedDial and Interactive Light Beam<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The glowing white strip indicates the level of each function that you select with a control button. Raise or lower the level by using the rotary encoder knob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Adjusting Parameters with Control Buttons<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Patch<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tap this button and then rotate the knob to choose among the five patches stored on the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Gain<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Select and rotate the knob to adjust the preamp gain on the selected patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>EQ<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjust the treble frequencies on the patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the BEAM app, you can access additional tone controls on the amp model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>FX<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Provides a macro to adjust the intensity of all the effects in the signal chain of the selected patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the BEAM app, you can select individual effects and dial in their parameters precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Volume<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjust your overall volume. Select this and turn the volume all the way down before you connect your guitar or your headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Connecting-Your-Blackstar-Beam-Amp-to-the-App-on-Your-Phone\">Connecting Your Blackstar Beam Amp to the App on Your Phone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Install the Blackstar BEAM app on your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>On your iPhone, <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/blackstar-beam\/id6475585132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download the app from the Apple App Store<\/a>.<\/li><li>On your Android device, <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.lewes&amp;hl=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download the app from the Google Play Store<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you connect your Beam Solo or Beam Mini to your phone, you can perform two functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Program effects, amps, and presets using the BEAM app.<\/li><li>Stream audio from your phone, either through the BEAM app (accessing YouTube videos) or from other apps, to play through your Beam unit so you can jam along.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To set up your phone for both of these functions, you must pair your Beam amp with your phone over Bluetooth in two separate steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, with the Beam Mini, first you make the connection within the BEAM app. This enables programming presets and parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable audio streaming, perform the second pairing in your phone\u2019s Bluetooth settings, not in the BEAM app. For the Beam Mini, the second Bluetooth connection is named \u201cBeam MINI Audio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can stream audio from any app on your phone, and it will play back through your Beam unit. You can also open the BEAM app, under the <strong>Music<\/strong> tab, tap the search bar, and search for YouTube videos. Select pedals, amps, cabinets, and mics. Connect to the Blackstar community to share patches and download new ones from the cloud. Jam along to video lessons, backing tracks, and drum loops found on YouTube within the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Update-the-Firmware\"><em>Update the Firmware<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Blackstar releases firmware updates that fix bugs, add additional features, and ensure compatibility with the latest version of the BEAM app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time you connect your Beam unit to the app, you\u2019ll be notified if there is a firmware update. Follow the prompts to install it. But first make sure that both your Beam unit and your phone or tablet either have fully charged batteries or are attached to their USB-C chargers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be patient while the app installs the update. Don\u2019t interrupt the process by quitting the app or powering off your phone or the Beam unit. When the update is complete, the app will notify you to power on your unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Cab-Simulation-with-\u201cIn-the-Room\u201d\"><em>Cab Simulation with \u201cIn the Room\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Amp modelers use impulse response (IR) virtual speaker cabinets that model a speaker going through a microphone and preamp. These are found in the presets, but Blackstar provides another option, \u201c<strong>In the Room<\/strong>.\u201d This simulates what a guitar cabinet would sound like to your ears if you were in the room with it rather than listening to the signal coming through a microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To select In the Room, tap the <strong>CabRig<\/strong> tab. Beneath the menu with the speaker cab, you can choose \u201cIn the Room,\u201d or one of three types of microphones. There are three settings under <strong>Size <\/strong>and a knob labeled \u201c<strong>Room<\/strong>\u201d for dialing in the effect. Within a patch, when you select Amp, use the menu to scroll through the amp models provided with the unit. At the bottom of the list, you\u2019ll see \u201cTone3000.\u201d This opens the Tone3000 website within the BEAM app. Create a free account at Tone3000 or log in to your existing one. You can select NAM captures, download them to the BEAM app, and assign them to Beam amp presets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your Beam Solo, if you don&#8217;t see the Tone3000 feature in the app, you need to update your unit to the newest firmware, following the on-screen instructions in the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tone3000.com\/blog\/blackstar-beam-solo-nam-a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tone3000&#8217;s announcement of support for NAM A2 on the Beam Solo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Using-Blackstar-Beam-as-an-Audio-Interface\">Using Blackstar Beam as an Audio Interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On macOS, iOS, and Android, the Beam is class compliant, meaning no driver installation is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Install the Windows Driver<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are on Windows, then first you\u2019ll need to download and install the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.blackstaramps.com\/uk\/ProductDownload\/All\">Blackstar USB Audio Driver for Windows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To access the download page, you must first log in to your user account and register your purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the <strong>Downloads<\/strong> page, locate the driver and download the installer. On your Windows computer, go to your Downloads folder, unzip the installer file, launch the installer, and follow the prompts to complete the installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Using the Audio Interface for Recording<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect your Beam unit to your computer or device using a USB-C data cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beam provides these channels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>USB Outputs to Your Computer or Device<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Guitar Output Left \u2014 Channel output with the amp model and all effects<\/li><li>Guitar Output Right<\/li><li>Guitar DI \u2014 The signal directly from your guitar with no amp model or effects<\/li><li>Headset Mic DI \u2014 The signal directly from the microphone in your headphones<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In the BEAM app, under <strong>Audio Settings<\/strong>, you can adjust the <strong>USB Recording Level<\/strong>.
