When you connect your Tone King pedal to your computer and use the free <strong>Tone King Editor app<\/strong>, you can access numerous tone-shaping options at the digital end of the signal chain that aren\u2019t available from the pedal\u2019s knobs and switches. These include selecting from a wide range of IR cabinets and loading your own IRs. On both models, the knobs are analog and not digitally controlled. You dial in your tones manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the tube-powered analog signal chain is the Synergy Amps digital component, which provides the power amp simulation and speaker cabinet emulation. This is the part that\u2019s controlled by the Tone King Editor app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Tone King Editor app, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Select three IR cabinet models for each of the two channels, including many IR choices that are stored in the unit but not accessible from the unit\u2019s front-panel switches.<\/li><li>Swap out different IRs and load your own from your computer to the unit\u2019s memory.<\/li><li>Shape the power amp simulation on each channel with settings for lowpass filter, highpass filter, and high-frequency compensation to restore some of the tone that changes with high attenuation.<\/li><li>Toggle certain functions on and off in software, some of which can also be manually triggered on the unit with the footswitches.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can set up and save 128 presets, which can be recalled using an external MIDI controller (sold separately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A MIDI preset instantly recalls:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Channel selection, 1 or 2<\/li><li>Master bypass on or off<\/li><li>IR selection for each channel<\/li><li>IR engaged or bypassed<\/li><li>Effects loop on or bypassed<\/li><li>Reverb on or off, with reverb tail on or off (when switching presets), and tremolo on and off for the Imperial<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"USB-C-Connection\"><strong>USB-C Connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect your pedal to your computer using a USB-C data cable. This serves two functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Connecting to the Tone King Editor app<\/li><li>Providing stereo digital audio playback (auxiliary input) from your computer so you can listen to practice tracks through your headphones while playing along.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also get audio playback from an iPhone or Android device connected by a USB-C data cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the Tone King preamp does not provide digital audio output over USB, so you can\u2019t use the USB connection to record to your DAW. To record the sound from the pedal, use the XLR balanced jacks to connect to an audio interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Selecting-IRs\"><strong>Selecting IRs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2026\/03\/Tone-King-Royalist-IR-details.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1003\" height=\"663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2026\/03\/Tone-King-Royalist-IR-details.jpg\" alt=\"Tone King Royalist IR details\" class=\"wp-image-1789521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2026\/03\/Tone-King-Royalist-IR-details.jpg 1003w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2026\/03\/Tone-King-Royalist-IR-details-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2026\/03\/Tone-King-Royalist-IR-details-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Selecting an IR in the Tone King Editor app.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the pedal, there are three IRs preset for each channel, which you can choose using the <strong>Cab<\/strong> toggle switch on each channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the Tone King Editor app, you can choose between a much larger range of OwnHammer IRs and load three at a time into the IR slots on each channel. These IRs model not only a speaker cabinet but also specific, carefully placed microphones and a mic preamp. When you select an IR in the app, it will display a description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the OH 112 Deluxe OX12K file has this legend: \u201cOxford 12K4 from 1967 captured in a Fender Deluxe Reverb 1 x 12 combo by Kevin Rowe of OwnHammer using Shure SM57, Neumann U 87, and Royer 121 microphones through mid-late 1970s API 312 preamps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Imperial comes with 15 IRs, and the Royalist comes with 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the Editor app, you can also load your own IR files from your computer, store them in the pedal, and assign them to the available slots for each channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Extracting IRs<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Editor app gives you the ability to download all the IRs that come with the pedal and save them to the hard drive of your computer. You can then use these cab models in your DAW with amp modeling plug-ins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the app, when you select any IR, you\u2019ll see an <strong>Extract All<\/strong> button at the bottom of the pane. Click on this, and you\u2019ll see a Save dialog. Navigate to a folder where you want to store these files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Firmware-Update\"><strong>Firmware Update<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From time to time, Tone King may release a free firmware update for their pedals. These will fix bugs, improve performance, and ensure compatibility with the newest version of the Tone King Editor app. Each time you connect your unit to the app, it will automatically check to see if there\u2019s a firmware update available. If so, then follow the on-screen prompts to install the update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be patient during the update, which may take several minutes.
