This update will fix bugs and may add new features, effects and models. Updating the firmware is also required for compatibility with the newest version of the <strong>BOSS Tone Studio for GX-1 and GX-1B<\/strong> editor\/librarian app. Here\u2019s how to update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"#Determine-the-firmware-version-on-your-GX-1-or-GX-1B\">Determine the firmware version on your GX-1 or GX-1B<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#Download-the-Correct-Firmware\">Download the Correct Firmware<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#Connect-the-GX-1-or-GX-1B-to-Your-Computer\">Connect the GX-1 or GX-1B to Your Computer<\/a><\/strong><ul><li><strong><a href=\"#Put-Your-GX-1-or-GX-1B-into-Updater-Mode\">Put Your GX-1 or GX-1B into Updater Mode<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong><a href=\"#Load-the-Firmware-Update-Files\">Load the Firmware Update Files<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Determine-the-firmware-version-on-your-GX-1-or-GX-1B\">Determine the firmware version on your GX-1 or GX-1B<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide power for your GX-1 or GX-1B. Turn it on by plugging an instrument cable into the <strong>Input<\/strong> jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On your GX-1 or GX-1B, tap the <strong>Menu<\/strong> button.<\/li><li>Tap the Down arrow button repeatedly to get to <strong>Info<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Tap Knob 2 to open the Information screen.<\/li><li>At the bottom you\u2019ll see the Version number (<em>e.g.,<\/em> \u201cVer:1.02 0100\u201d). Take note of it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Shut down your GX-1 or GX-1B by unplugging the instrument cable from the Input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Download-the-Correct-Firmware\">Download the Correct Firmware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: The GX-1 (for guitar) and the GX-1B (for bass) have different firmware installers. Make sure you have selected the correct installer for your unit. Accidentally installing the wrong firmware may leave your unit in an inoperable state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BOSS refers to a device\u2019s firmware as the &#8220;<strong>System Program<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>GX-1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On your Mac or Windows PC, go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boss.info\/global\/products\/gx-1\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS GX-1 Downloads page<\/a>.<\/li><li>Under <strong>Updates &amp; Drivers<\/strong>, take note of the version number on the <strong>GX-1 System Program<\/strong> installer file.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the version number is the same as that of the System Program on your GX-1, then there\u2019s no update needed at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>If the version number of the update is higher, then click on the link.<\/li><li>On the next page, you\u2019ll see a full set of instructions. Review them.<\/li><li>Scroll down to the bottom of the page, check \u201cI agree and wish to proceed with download,\u201d and click <strong>Download File<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3>GX-1B<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On your Mac or Windows PC, go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boss.info\/us\/products\/gx-1b\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS GX-1B Downloads<\/a> page.<\/li><li>Under &#8220;Updates &amp; Drivers,&#8221; take note of the version number on the <strong>GX-1B System Program<\/strong> installer file.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the version number is the same as that of the System Program on your GX-1B, then there\u2019s no update needed at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>If the version number of the update is higher, then click on the link.<\/li><li>On the next page, you\u2019ll see a full set of instructions. Review them.<\/li><li>Scroll down to the bottom of the page, check \u201cI agree and wish to proceed with download,\u201d and click <strong>Download File<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Connect-the-GX-1-or-GX-1B-to-Your-Computer\">Connect the GX-1 or GX-1B to Your Computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Put-Your-GX-1-or-GX-1B-into-Updater-Mode\">Put Your GX-1 or GX-1B into Updater Mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can power the GX-1 or GX-1B directly from the computer over the USB cable during the firmware update procedure. If you have a laptop, then connect the laptop\u2019s power supply so that it\u2019s not running off the battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With no other cables connected to the GX-1 or GX-1B, connect the unit to your computer using a USB-C data cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put the GX-1 or GX-1B into firmware update mode by holding down the <strong>Enter<\/strong> button while you insert an instrument cable plug into the <strong>Input<\/strong> jack. This turns the unit on. The display screen will say \u201cGX-1 Updater\u201d or \u201cGX-1B Updater,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your Mac or Windows PC, a new drive icon named \u201cGX-1\u201d or \u201cGX-1B\u201d will appear on the desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Load-the-Firmware-Update-Files\">Load the Firmware Update Files<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: Be patient while the firmware update is in progress. Do not disconnect the USB-C cable during the update, because this will cut the power to the GX-1. Do not unplug your guitar cable from the input, as this will shut the unit down. Interrupting the firmware update process may leave your GX-1 in an inoperable state that requires service by Roland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Go to your Downloads folder and extract the firmware update installer file. It will have a name similar to \u201cgx1b_sys_v103.zip.\u201d<\/li><li>You will see a folder with that name. It should contain two files with names similar to \u201cGX-1ROM.bin\u201d and \u201cROMINFO.TXT.\u201d<\/li><li>Copy both files to the GX-1 or GX-1B drive icon on your desktop.<\/li><li>After the files have been copied, perform the <strong>Eject<\/strong> procedure to unmount the drive:<ul><li>On Windows, right-click on the GX-1 or GX-1B icon and choose <strong>Eject<\/strong>.<\/li><li>On macOS, command-click or right-click on the GX-1 or GX-1B icon and choose <strong>Eject<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>After the drive has been ejected, the update procedure will begin on the GX-1 or GX-1B. Do not disconnect any cables!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait patiently while the unit installs the update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your GX-1 or GX-1B, the message \u201cComplete\u201d will appear on the display. Only then can you shut down the unit by unplugging your instrument cable from the <strong>Input<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn the unit back on by plugging the instrument cable back in. On the startup screen, you\u2019ll see the firmware number displayed.
