Conventions with the GX-1 & GX-1B<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThese two units operate the same but have different models and presets. The GX-1 comes with guitar amp models and effects while the GX-1B comes with bass amp models and effects tweaked for bass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this guide, we\u2019ll refer to the GX-1, but everything also applies to the GX-1B unless noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Download & Install the Driver<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nTo use the GX-1 as a 4-channel audio interface on your computer, to record to a DAW, and to use the BOSS Tone Studio app, you need to download and install the newest version of the correct BOSS driver for your unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On your computer, go to the GX-1 Downloads page<\/a> and download and install the GX-1\/GX-1B Driver<\/strong> for macOS or Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBOSS GX-1\/GX-1B Firmware Update<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nNOTE<\/strong>: The firmware or System Program for the GX-1 and the GX-1B are not interchangeable. Make sure you download and install the correct version for your unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen you first take your GX-1 out of the box, you need to check to see if there\u2019s a newer version of the firmware and install it. From time to time, BOSS will release new firmware (called a \u201cSystem Program\u201d) that will fix bugs, may add new sounds and features, and provide compatibility with the newest version of the BOSS Tone Studio apps for your computer and mobile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nIn keeping with its ultra-portable design, there are several ways to power the GX-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Over USB-C using a USB AC adapter of 5V or greater, or a USB power bank (not included)<\/li>
- Over USB-C connected to your computer. Use a USB-C data cable, as you\u2019ll also be transmitting control data and digital audio.<\/li>
- By connecting a Roland\/BOSS PSA-120S power supply<\/a> (sold separately) to the DC In<\/strong> jack.<\/li>
- By installing 4 alkaline AA batteries in the compartment on the underside.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Input & Power Switch<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nConnect your guitar or bass with a 1\/4-inch TS instrument cable. This also acts as the power switch. The unit turns on when you plug in the instrument cable and shuts down when you unplug the cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Output<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nConnect a 1\/4-inch TS instrument cable to the L\/Mono output. For stereo, connect another cable to the R output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Go to the Output Select<\/strong> function in the GX-1\u2019s menu to configure your unit to work correctly with the kind of signal path and amp rig you\u2019re using.<\/p>\n\n\n\nChoose \u201cLine\/Phones\u201d if you\u2019re using headphones or connecting to a keyboard amp, mixer, or recording device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are connecting to a guitar or bass amp, then select the appropriate setting depending on the type of amp and whether you are connecting to the input of the amp or to the return of its effects loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See the note above about the Output Select<\/strong> function.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCTL 2, 3\/Exp 2<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nOptionally, you can connect an external wired footswitch or expression pedal (sold separately) to this 1\/4-inch TRS connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BOSS lists these compatible expression pedals: Roland EV-5<\/a> and BOSS EV-30<\/a>. Compatible footswitches include the FS-5U<\/a>, FS-6<\/a>, and FS-7<\/a> models.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFor each preset, you can assign up to 8 parameters to be modulated at once via a footswitch or expression pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Set up and configure the GX-1 and GX-1B to use external pedals according to the instructions in the BOSS GX-1 Reference Manual > Footswitch and expression pedal settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBluetooth<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe GX-1 has built-in Bluetooth, which serves three functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Stream audio and practice tracks from your mobile device as an auxiliary input<\/li>
- Connect to the BOSS Tone Studio app for iPhone, iPad, and Android<\/li>
- Use wireless external pedals and footswitches (sold separately)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Enable Bluetooth audio in the GX-1\u2019s menu according to the BOSS GX-1 Reference Manual > Wireless connection with a mobile device<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe BOSS-approved Bluetooth wireless units are the EV-1-WL<\/a> expression pedal and the FS-1-WL<\/a> footswitch. <\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nBOSS GX-1B front-panel controls<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWith the GX-1 on your desktop, the knobs and buttons make editing easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The footswitches and expression pedal enable you to call up and control your sounds when the unit\u2019s on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Display Screen<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe square display screen shows you banks of parameters for sound editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rotary Encoder Knobs<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe three knobs are also push buttons. They change function depending on the context of what\u2019s displayed on the screen. They are used to enter parameters in conjunction with the Menu buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Menu Buttons<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nUse the Menu<\/strong> and Up<\/strong> and Down<\/strong> buttons to page between rows of functions and parameters on the display screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWrite Buttons<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe Exit<\/strong> and Enter<\/strong> buttons are used in saving Memories and parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHexaray Effect Buttons<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nHexaray<\/strong> is the BOSS name for the newly designed six-sided buttons beneath the rotary encoder knobs. The Hexaray buttons give you a visual indication of which effects blocks are engaged in a Memory. Tap a button to toggle an effects block on or off. Hold down the button to bring up the editable parameters for that effects block.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTap the Edit<\/strong> Hexaray button to bring up the master edit page for that Memory. In this view, you can even change the order of effects blocks within the signal chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Pedal FX<\/strong> button enables you to edit parameters assigned to the built-in expression pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFootswitches<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe two switches on the left are used to page between Memories. Tap the left and center footswitches together to engage the Tuner. Tap the center and right footswitches to engage the Looper. You can assign custom functions to the C1<\/strong> switch on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBuilt-in Expression Pedal<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe pedal can be configured with the Pedal FX menu to modulate different parameters. By default, setting the pedal to the heel position brings up the Tuner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Editing & Saving Presets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nPreset Structure<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nMemory<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\nA preset on the GX-1 is called a Memory<\/strong>. This includes a signal chain of effects blocks (which may include an amp block) and the settings within each effects block. There are 99 User Memories (U01\u2013U99) and 99 permanent Preset Memories (P01\u2013P99).<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Edit<\/strong> Hexaray button shows the signal chain for the Memory. Use the rotary encoders to move between effects blocks and select one for editing. You can also change the order of the effects blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\nGear Suite<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\nGear Suite<\/strong> is a set of dialed-in presets within an amp or effect. Within any block, select the amp or effect that you want. In the menu for that amp or effect, you\u2019ll see Gear Suite as a parameter. Make a Gear Suite selection, and you can further adjust each parameter for that amp or effect. You can save your own Gear Suite settings to recall your favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLiveset<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\nA Liveset<\/strong> is a collection of multiple User Memories that you can load into your GX-1. You can create and save Livesets using the BOSS Tone Studio for GX-1 and GX-1B app<\/strong>, and you can download new Livesets created by other users through the BOSS Tone Exchange<\/strong> cloud service.<\/p>\n\n\n\nEditing Effects Within a Memory<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nYou can learn to edit Memories by starting with one from the Preset bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Use the Hexaray buttons to select one effects block. Hold the button for that block for 2 seconds to open the Effect Block Edit screen.<\/li>
- Choose from Gear Suite presets by turning Knob 1.<\/li>
- Confirm the selection by pressing down the knob.<\/li>
- Using the Up and Down buttons and the three knobs, you can tweak parameters for the effect.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
You can save a new Gear Suite setting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Press the Exit<\/strong> and Enter<\/strong> buttons simultaneously.<\/li>
- Navigate to the Gear Suite Write<\/strong> field using Knob 1.<\/li>
- Select the effects block you want to save.<\/li>
- Using Knob 2, select the target location (U01\u2013U99).<\/li>
- Give the setting a name using Knob 3.<\/li>
- Press Enter to save your new Gear Suite setting.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Repeat this for each effects block. You can also disable effects blocks you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saving a Memory<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n- Press the Exit<\/strong> and Enter<\/strong> buttons at the same time. The Write Menu<\/strong> screen appears.<\/li>
- Press the Up<\/strong> or Down<\/strong> buttons to move the cursor to the \u201cWrite\u201d row.<\/li>
- Press Knob 1 to bring up the Memory Write<\/strong> screen.<\/li>
- Turn Knob 1 to select the save destination (U01\u2013U99).<\/li>
- Use Knobs 2 and 3 to edit the Memory name.<\/li>
- Press the Enter<\/strong> button to save your Memory to the chosen location.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
There are three other functions under the Write Menu:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Exchange<\/strong> for swapping the position of two User Memories<\/li>
- Initialize<\/strong> for creating a blank Memory from scratch<\/li>
- Memory Order<\/strong> to reorder saved Memories<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nBOSS Tone Studio for GX-1 on macOS<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWhile you can program all the features of the GX-1 on the unit using its display, menus, and controls, everything is easier to set up and manage in the BOSS Tone Studio for GX-1 editor\/librarian app<\/strong>. The same app is used for both the GX-1 and the GX-1B. You can create and edit Memories and device parameters, and build and manage Livesets.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe app enables you to make backups of your Memories, Livesets, and settings to your computer or mobile device and restore them when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can log in to the BOSS Tone Exchange<\/strong> to share and download additional Livesets to load into your GX-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn the Session<\/strong> screen, you can set up a session list<\/strong>. This is a playlist of tracks, including YouTube videos, that you can play along with through your GX-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe app comes in a desktop computer version that you use with the USB connection and in a wireless mobile version for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that connects over Bluetooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make a Gear Suite selection, and you can further adjust each parameter for that amp or effect. You can save your own Gear Suite settings to recall your favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLiveset<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\nA Liveset<\/strong> is a collection of multiple User Memories that you can load into your GX-1. You can create and save Livesets using the BOSS Tone Studio for GX-1 and GX-1B app<\/strong>, and you can download new Livesets created by other users through the BOSS Tone Exchange<\/strong> cloud service.<\/p>\n\n\n\nEditing Effects Within a Memory<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\nYou can learn to edit Memories by starting with one from the Preset bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Use the Hexaray buttons to select one effects block. Hold the button for that block for 2 seconds to open the Effect Block Edit screen.<\/li>
- Choose from Gear Suite presets by turning Knob 1.<\/li>
- Confirm the selection by pressing down the knob.<\/li>
- Using the Up and Down buttons and the three knobs, you can tweak parameters for the effect.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
You can save a new Gear Suite setting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Press the Exit<\/strong> and Enter<\/strong> buttons simultaneously.<\/li>
- Navigate to the Gear Suite Write<\/strong> field using Knob 1.<\/li>
- Select the effects block you want to save.<\/li>
- Using Knob 2, select the target location (U01\u2013U99).<\/li>
- Give the setting a name using Knob 3.<\/li>
- Press Enter to save your new Gear Suite setting.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Repeat this for each effects block. You can also disable effects blocks you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saving a Memory<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n- Press the Exit<\/strong> and Enter<\/strong> buttons at the same time. The Write Menu<\/strong> screen appears.<\/li>
- Press the Up<\/strong> or Down<\/strong> buttons to move the cursor to the \u201cWrite\u201d row.<\/li>
- Press Knob 1 to bring up the Memory Write<\/strong> screen.<\/li>
- Turn Knob 1 to select the save destination (U01\u2013U99).<\/li>
- Use Knobs 2 and 3 to edit the Memory name.<\/li>
