If you play saxophone, flute, or oboe, then an Akai EWI is a second instrument that enables you to play synthesizer sounds and emulate other woodwind and orchestral instruments for live performance or recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Akai EWI features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A breath controller mouthpiece that, while not the same as a reed and mouthpiece on a conventional saxophone, senses your breath so you can start, sustain, and stop notes and control vibrato<\/li><li>Keys laid out so that you can play notes with similar (but not identical) fingerings to those on an acoustic saxophone. You can also select different modes that modify the behavior of the keys to emulate the fingerings used on the flute, oboe, or the valves of a trumpet.<\/li><li>An internal sound engine that creates synthesizer sounds and emulations of orchestral instruments that you can play expressively<\/li><li>An audio output so that you can connect a cable and send the sound to an amplifier, PA system, or audio interface for recording<\/li><li>Headphone output so you can listen to your playing<\/li><li>The ability to play external instruments through MIDI<\/li><li>Battery power, with an internal rechargeable battery, so you can play without being connected to a power cable<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Akai EWI Solo has an internal speaker that puts out enough volume for you to be able to hear what you play without requiring headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EWI5000 comes with a wireless receiver so you can play your instrument without a cable connection and use the output from the receiver to connect to your computer over USB or to speakers using audio cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Register-Your-Purchase,-Download-the-Manuals-&amp;-App\"><strong>Register Your Purchase, Download the Manuals &amp; App<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Registration<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you go any further, take the time to register your purchase and obtain your three-year extended warranty. You may need an adapter for a USB-C port on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Update-the-Firmware\"><strong>Update the Firmware<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An Akai EWI is a digital device that runs software internally. From time to time, Akai may release a firmware update that will fix bugs and may add improvements and new features. A firmware update may also be necessary so that your instrument works correctly with the newest version of the Akai editor app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first get your new instrument, it\u2019s essential that you check to see if there\u2019s a new version of the firmware and install it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Firmware Update for the EWI Solo<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Connect your EWI Solo to your computer using the USB cable.<\/li><li>On your computer, launch the EWI Solo Editor app that you installed in the step above.<\/li><li>The app will automatically check to see if the firmware is up to date then prompt you to install an update if needed. Follow the instructions to proceed.<\/li><li>Be patient while the update is carried out. Do not quit the app or disconnect the USB cable. Do not touch any keys or controls on your EWI Solo. If the process is interrupted, then you will have to repeat it.<\/li><li>When the update process is successfully completed, the display will instruct you to disconnect the USB cable from the EWI Solo.<\/li><li>Disconnect the EWI Solo from your computer. Shut down your EWI Solo. When you power it on again, your EWI will be ready to play.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more in the <strong>EWI Solo User Guide &gt; Other Functions &gt; Updating the Firmware<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Firmware Update for the EWI5000<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On your computer, go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akaipro.com\/downloads#ewi5000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Akai Downloads page<\/a> and locate and download the newest version of the firmware for the Akai EWI5000. Go to your Downloads folder and unzip the file.<\/li><li>Connect your EWI5000 to your computer with the USB cable.<\/li><li>Open the EWI5000 Editor app that you installed in the step above.<\/li><li>In the app, click \u201c<strong>Settings<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li><li>Next to \u201cFirmware Version,\u201d click \u201c<strong>Update<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li><li>In the Open dialog, navigate to the firmware update folder that you downloaded. Select the file ending in <strong>.syx<\/strong>. Click \u201c<strong>Open<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li><li>The update will begin. Be patient while the update is carried out. Do not quit the app or disconnect the USB cable. Do not touch any keys or controls on your EWI. If the process is interrupted, then you will have to repeat it.<\/li><li>When the update is successfully completed, the display on your EWI5000 will read \u201c<strong>Gd<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li><li>Disconnect the EWI5000 from your computer. Shut down your EWI. You can play your EWI while the battery is charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your EWI5000, you must first install the rechargeable battery. This requires a Phillips-head screwdriver. Follow the instructions in the <strong>EWI5000 User Guide &gt; Getting Started<\/strong>. You can then connect the USB power adapter and play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Connect-to-Speakers-or-Headphones\"><em>Connect to Speakers or Headphones<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the EWI Solo, you can play sounds using the built-in speaker or connect headphones to the 1\/8-inch <strong>Phones<\/strong> jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the EWI5000, connect a 1\/4-inch TRS cable from the <strong>Line Out<\/strong> jack to an external amplifier or powered speakers for stereo output or a 1\/4-inch TS instrument cable for mono output. You can also connect headphones using the 1\/8-inch <strong>Phones<\/strong> jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Play!\"><em>Play!<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: The keys on the EWI are triggered by sensing the electrical capacitance in your fingertips. For this to work, you must make a ground connection with your thumbs. Keep your left thumb on the octave rollers on the back and your right thumb on the grounding plate between the pitch-bend plates. If your thumbs aren\u2019t touching these areas, then your EWI will not detect your fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the EWI\u2019s neck strap attached to the instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place your thumbs according to the note above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold the mouthpiece gently between your lips with your teeth. The EWI detects the pressure in your breath. The embouchure isn\u2019t the same as on an acoustic reed instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mouthpiece has a <strong>bite sensor<\/strong>. By biting gently, you can introduce vibrato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tongue the mouthpiece with small bursts of air for more expressive control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To adapt your fingering to the layout of the EWI, you will need to refer to the <strong>Appendix &gt; Fingering Charts<\/strong> in the owner\u2019s manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn how to use the <strong>Octave Rollers<\/strong>, <strong>Glide Plate<\/strong>, and <strong>Pitch-Bend Plates<\/strong> in your owner\u2019s manual under <strong>Getting Started &gt; Play!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Select-Different-Instrument-&amp;-Synthesizer-Sounds\"><em>Select Different Instrument &amp; Synthesizer Sounds<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The EWI Solo has 200 built-in sounds and settings. To select a sound, press the <strong>Prog<\/strong> button below the display. For a full list of programs, see <strong>Appendix &gt; Program List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EWI5000 has two banks for programs, the Preset Bank and the User Bank, each with 100 programs. There are three methods for scrolling through programs: using the <strong>Program<\/strong> button, using the <strong>Hold<\/strong> or <strong>Interval<\/strong> buttons, or using the note keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more in the <strong>EWI5000 User Manual &gt; Advanced Functions &gt; Managing Programs &gt; Selecting Programs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Saxophone,-Flute,-Oboe-&amp;-Trumpet-Fingerings\"><em>Saxophone, Flute, Oboe &amp; Trumpet Fingerings<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the note keys on the EWI are fixed, you can select different fingering modes that more closely represent the fingering of your preferred acoustic instrument. You may need to learn a few new fingerings to adapt to the EWI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the EWI Solo, select an alternate fingering mode on the display screen according to the instructions in the <strong>EWI Solo User Guide &gt; Operation &gt; Global Menu &gt; Fingering<\/strong>. Consult the <strong>Fingering Charts<\/strong> in the <strong>Appendix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the EWI5000, select an alternate fingering mode on the display screen according to the instructions in the <strong>EWI5000 User Guide &gt; Advanced Functions &gt; Fingering Modes<\/strong>. Consult the <strong>Fingering Charts<\/strong> in the <strong>Appendix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"EWI5000:-Calibrating-Sensors-&amp;-Sound-Parameters\"><em>EWI5000: Calibrating Sensors &amp; Sound Parameters<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an EWI5000, then you have the ability to adjust and calibrate the instrument to suit your playing style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beneath a sliding cover on the underside of the EWI5000, just below the mouthpiece and above the display screen, are eight knobs. By adjusting certain knobs, you can customize your instrument for how much breath is required to play a sound, how loudly or quietly you can play, how much biting the mouthpiece affects the sound, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>EWI5000: Calibrating Sensors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Press the <strong>Setup<\/strong> button to enter <strong>Setup Mode<\/strong>. By using menu commands on the display, you can calibrate the responsiveness and range of the Note Delay, Breath Sensor, Bite Sensor, Pitch-Bend Plates, Glide Plate, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more in the <strong>EWI5000 User Guide &gt; Advanced Functions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"What-Is-MIDI?-The-Akai-EWI-as-a-MIDI-Controller\"><strong>What Is MIDI? The Akai EWI as a MIDI Controller<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your EWI can be used as a MIDI controller. In addition to making sounds within the instrument, you can use your EWI to play external instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other electronic musical instruments, such as keyboards, your EWI uses the universal MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) protocol. With MIDI, you can go beyond the instrument sounds built into your EWI and access a much broader range of electronic sounds both for emulating orchestral instruments and playing synthesizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you play a note on your EWI, it transmits MIDI data that plays that note on an external hardware synthesizer or on a virtual instrument plug-in on your computer, running inside a recording app called a DAW (digital audio workstation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that programs and sounds on synthesizers and virtual instrument plug-ins are usually set up to be played from a keyboard. To play these sounds expressively with your EWI, you will have to modify the parameters of the sounds on the synthesizer or virtual instrument. Specifically, synthesizer programs need to be modified to use MIDI CC 2 for breath control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MIDI output from your EWI can also be used for recording. A DAW can record MIDI data separately from audio. After you record a track, you can edit your performance and assign the MIDI data to different virtual instruments.
