This article only scratches the surface, so make sure to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/files\/download\/other_assets\/0\/2584700\/MODX-M_operation_manual_En_A0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MODX M Operation Manual<\/a> for more information!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li><a href=\"#MODX-M-Parts\"><strong>MODX M Parts<\/strong><\/a><ul><li><a href=\"#What-Is-a-Part\"><strong>What Is a Part?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"#How-to-Create-a-Performance\"><strong>How to Create a Performance<\/strong><\/a><ul><li><a href=\"#Importing-Custom-Samples\"><strong>Importing Custom Samples<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"#How-to-Create-a-Live-Set\"><strong>How to Create a Live Set<\/strong><\/a><ul><li><strong><a href=\"#Add-Audio-Pattern-or-Song-to-a-Live-Set\">Add Audio, Pattern, or Song to a Live Set<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"MODX-M-Parts\">MODX M Parts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A MODX M sound preset, called a Performance, can be broken down into two components: elements and parts. Elements are all the individual sounds used, and a part is the sound of all the elements and any effects applied to the elements (<em>e.g.<\/em>, EQ, delay, reverb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"What-Is-a-Part\">What Is a Part?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can edit a sound in an infinite number of ways on the MODX M by layering elements and turning them into a part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three different element types you can use when creating a part: <strong>AWM2<\/strong>, <strong>AN-X<\/strong>, and <strong>FM-X<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The <strong>AWM2 <\/strong>sound engine uses waveforms that contain sample wave data you assign to each element and then adds filters, envelope generators, EQs, and various other effects.<\/li><li><strong>AN-X<\/strong> is a digital re-creation of analog synthesis and consists of three oscillators and noise.<\/li><li><strong>FM-X <\/strong>produces its sound by frequency-modulating eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/insync\/noise-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generators<\/a>, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/insync\/operator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operators<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each part can contain 128 AWM2 elements, eight FM-X generators, three AN-X operators, and one noise tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can store over 3,400 Performances on the MODX M and add 16 Performances to one Live Set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"How-to-Create-a-Performance\">How to Create a Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The MODX M has plenty of factory Performances to choose from, all of which are fully customizable. You can also start with a blank canvas to create a unique sound that suits your needs. Below are instructions to get you started, but check out <em>Chapter 6<\/em> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/files\/download\/other_assets\/0\/2584700\/MODX-M_operation_manual_En_A0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Operation Manual<\/a> to learn about detailed editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Press the <strong>Performance View<\/strong> button to pull up a list of all Performances. You can also press <strong>Category <\/strong>to open the <em>Category Search <\/em>screen and use the options on the left to filter what sound you want (<em>e.g.<\/em>, synth, piano, etc.).<\/li><li>To start off with a blank Performance, enter the <em>Category Search <\/em>screen, press <strong>Init <\/strong>in the filters to create a blank Performance, and press the <strong>+ <\/strong>buttons on each row to add parts.<ul><li>Press the <strong>Performance <\/strong>button to navigate to additional pages when you\u2019re creating Performances.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Continue adding parts until you\u2019re happy with the sound.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Exit <\/strong>to navigate back to the <em>Performance Edit <\/em>screen.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Importing-Custom-Samples\">Importing Custom Samples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT! <\/strong>The MODX M only supports .wav and .aiff sound files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MODX M already has thousands of individual sounds to choose from, but you can customize it even further by importing any samples you like!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Format a USB thumb drive on your MODX M (as outlined in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/yamaha-modx-m-firmware-update-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Firmware Update Guide<\/a>).<\/li><li>Connect it to your computer and copy and paste the samples you want to import.<\/li><li>Safely disconnect the thumb drive from your computer and connect it to the <em>TO DEVICE <\/em>port of the MODX M.<\/li><li>Create an <em>Init<\/em> part as outlined above, press the part\u2019s name, choose <strong>Edit<\/strong>, and then choose the element number where you want to load it.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Select Waveform<\/strong> and choose the audio sample.<\/li><li>After loading the sample, go back to the<em> Element Edit<\/em> screen. Press <strong>ON <\/strong>to turn on the element.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"How-to-Create-a-Live-Set\">How to Create a Live Set<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Live Sets can hold up to 16 Performances. This is especially useful in live situations where you need to change patterns on the fly because you can access all the selected presets from one screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press the <strong>Live Set <\/strong>button so it illuminates then hold <strong>SHIFT <\/strong>and press the <strong>Live Set <\/strong>button.<\/li><li>Tap the slot you wish to add the Live Set and then press <strong>ENTER <\/strong>or one of the three store operations listed at the bottom of the display.<ul><li><strong>Store As New Perf. and Register<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Overwrite Current Perf. and Register<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Register<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"547\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2025\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1788031\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2025\/11\/image.png 547w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2025\/11\/image-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Live Set options<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Add-Audio-Pattern-or-Song-to-a-Live-Set\">Add Audio, Pattern, or Song to a Live Set<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only can you add Performances to a Live Set, but you can also add any recorded audio, patterns, or songs stored on the MODX M.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press the <strong>Live Set <\/strong>button followed by the <strong>Edit <\/strong>button.<\/li><li>Select an empty slot then choose <em>Song<\/em>, <em>Audio<\/em>, or <em>Pattern<\/em>.
