But, like every year, it is not a good idea for musicians, audio engineers, and content creators to upgrade to the latest macOS right away. We need patience.

Before upgrading, you need to be certain of two things:

Is your device compatible with macOS Sequoia?

Are all the pieces of hardware and software that you use compatible with macOS Sequoia?

The answer to the first question is straightforward. The answer to the second question will require you to do some research.

We wrote this guide to explain all this and to provide you with our Compatibility Chart below, which points you to the information you need from over 200 manufacturers and developers of pro audio, music, and content-creation software and hardware. Sweetwater will regularly update this page and related articles with new information as we work with macOS Sequoia.

Apple announced macOS Sequoia at the annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2024. Since then, we at Sweetwater have been checking out the Developer and Public beta builds, and now the full release version.

macOS Sequoia Features

Apple Intelligence

Apple announced that macOS Sequoia would offer a host of new AI (artificial intelligence) features, under the trademark Apple Intelligence. However, these features were not implemented in the first version of macOS Sequoia 15.0. Apple released the first of these AI features in macOS Sequoia 15.1. Apple will roll out additional features and improve them gradually with subsequent updates through the coming year.

Apple Intelligence features don’t pertain directly to audio and music production. Rather, Apple intends its new tools to provide enhancements that users will appreciate in their daily work. Apple is rolling out new Writing Tools with enhanced language capabilities to help a user summarize and rewrite information. The new Image Wand will help a user transform a rough sketch into a detailed diagram. Genmoji will create images from photographs. Write a prompt, and Apple Intelligence will create a movie based on your photos and videos. Siri, Apple’s voice-activated service, will be expanded with Apple Intelligence as well.

On the Mac platform, Apple Intelligence only functions on a Mac with Apple silicon running Sequoia. While there are a few Intel-based Mac models that can be upgraded to Sequoia, Apple Intelligence won’t function on them.

Apple Intelligence also functions on certain recent models of iPhone and iPad running iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Not all AI features are available in all regions in the world due to differing regulatory requirements.

Learn more on this Apple Intelligence page.

Other Sequoia Features

Continuity functions, integrating Mac with iPhone and iPad, have been expanded with iPhone Mirroring, which enables you to view your iPhone on your Mac screen and to control everything on your iPhone with your Mac’s keyboard and mouse. You can now drag and drop files, photos, and videos between your iPhone or iPad and your Mac. This requires a Mac running macOS Sequoia and an iPhone running iOS 18, both registered to the same Apple ID.

Compatible models of Apple AirPods earbuds and headphones have improved voice isolation and control features, and even a new hearing aid function, when used with Sequoia.

There are new features in the Finder for organizing windows and laying out your workspace. Sequoia provides enhancements for sharing screen content in video-calling apps. Safari adds improvements to Reader mode and the ability to summarize and pull up relevant information from websites.

Safari and macOS have long had features for securely protecting and managing all your passwords; those have been moved to a new Passwords app.

Less apparent to the user will be security updates. Apple will continue to provide security responses to older macOS versions for some time, but one good reason to upgrade to the newest macOS is to make sure your Mac has the best security working behind the scenes.

Learn about these and other features on Apple’s macOS Sequoia page.

Should I Upgrade to macOS Sequoia?

You rely on your DAW, your plug-ins, your virtual instruments, and your other music and audio apps, not to mention hardware such as your audio interface and your MIDI controller. If you have a Mac running a previous version of macOS, you have put together a system that is stable, and you have a platform where you can get your work done.

Upgrading to Sequoia will bring improvements. As always, the latest macOS will have important security updates of benefit to all users.

But first, you must make sure you aren’t disrupting your stable system. Before you upgrade, you must ensure that all your software can be updated to be compatible with Sequoia and that your hardware is compatible, too.

Third-party hardware and software compatibility

The developers of your hardware and software may not be ready for macOS Sequoia; this is business as usual when Apple releases a new macOS. While some developers will announce compatibility promptly, others will require weeks or months to test their products and to produce new updates of their software that provide compatibility. You should wait to upgrade to Sequoia until all the products you use are compatible.

You may also learn that pieces of software or hardware you have used for years are no longer supported by their manufacturers and will not be offered in versions compatible with macOS Sequoia. In that case, you’ll need to make decisions about replacing these items with newer devices.

What about Sequoia on an Intel-based Mac, versus a Mac with Apple silicon?

In 2023 Apple phased out the last of the Mac models with an Intel CPU. All current Mac devices have an Apple silicon chip (M1, M2, M3, or M4). The first Mac with Apple silicon was introduced in late 2020. Here at Sweetwater, our professionals have been amazed at the gains in system performance and audio-processing power with Mac with Apple silicon.

If you have one of the few remaining models of Intel-based Mac that is compatible with Sequoia (we provide Apple’s list below), you may be able to upgrade that Mac when the time is right. However, the older, Intel-based Mac platform isn’t nearly as powerful as the new-generation Apple silicon platform. An Intel-based Mac running Sequoia will not be able to make use of Apple Intelligence features; those require a Mac with Apple silicon.

Apple has announced that the next version macOS Tahoe 26, expected in the fall of 2025, will be the last to support Intel-based Mac computers. We recommend that you plan a move to a new Mac with Apple silicon: a Mac desktop or MacBook.

32-bit software is incompatible with macOS

There may still be users out there who have an Intel-based Mac running 32-bit legacy software and plug-ins. The last version of macOS that could run 32-bit code was macOS 10.14 Mojave from 2018. Every version of macOS since then requires apps that run 64-bit code. If you are still relying on 32-bit apps on your old Mac, then before you get a new Mac with Apple silicon, you need to check with the manufacturers of all your apps and plug-ins to obtain 64-bit versions. Before you get a new Mac, you should also back up and save any work you created with those 32-bit versions on your old Mac.

Now Is the Time to Make a Time Machine Backup!

Here’s a timely reminder.

IMPORTANT: Before you upgrade to macOS Sonoma, you need to connect an external hard drive and use Apple’s Time Machine app to make a complete backup of your system. That way, if anything goes wrong after your upgrade, you can easily restore your Mac to its original state using the Time Machine backup.

Follow the instructions in Sweetwater’s macOS Time Machine Backup Guide.

MacOS Time Machine Backup Guide

Is My Mac a macOS Sequoia–supported Device?

Pull down the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen, then choose About This Mac. They will announce the results of their tests and will release new versions of their products that provide compatibility.

For the latest information, check the table below, which has links to the developers’ support pages.

Compatibility with your DAW

Whatever third-party DAW you use, wait until its developer announces macOS Sequoia compatibility. Developers require weeks or months after the release of a new macOS to provide a new version that’s compatible and tested to be 100% reliable.

Compatibility for plug-ins

Your existing plug-ins will need a DAW that is macOS Sequoia compatible in which to run. But you still need to check with the plug-in developers to see about compatibility and updates.

Compatibility for sound libraries

Some developers provide sound libraries that run under another company’s sampler software app. The best-known example is Kontakt by Native Instruments. Those libraries will become compatible when you update your copy of the sampler app to a new version that supports macOS Sequoia. Check with the developers of both your sampler app and your sound libraries.

Apple silicon native

If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, you need to update your third-party software to versions that are Apple silicon native in order to take full advantage of the computing power of your Mac.

Learn more in our SweetCare guide Mac with Apple silicon vs. Intel-based Mac: What You Need to Know.

Mac with Apple silicon vs. Intel-based Mac: What You Need to Know

Drivers and Class-compliant Hardware

Certain audio interfaces and MIDI devices may not be compatible with macOS Sequoia right away.
