The Oberheim TEO-5 keyboard synthesizer<\/a> and TEO-5 Desktop Module<\/a> are a great entry point to the classic Oberheim sound, with modern enhancements. We wrote this guide to help you get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Register Your Purchase with Oberheim<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Register your purchase by going to the Oberheim Support page<\/a> and clicking on Register Instrument<\/strong>. Fill out the information, and enter the TEO-5\u2019s serial number. Check the box if you want to Receive News<\/strong> about updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From the Support page<\/a>, click on TEO-5 User\u2019s Guide<\/strong> to download the newest version for reference. Trust us: it\u2019s a short manual that\u2019s easy to understand and full of useful examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    TEO-5 Connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Make sure your unit is powered down. Turn the Master Volume knob on the front panel all the way down before you connect any cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Connect headphones with a 1\/4-inch TRS<\/a> connection. The volume is controlled by the Master Volume knob on the front panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Left and Right Audio Outputs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Connect unbalanced 1\/4-inch TS<\/a> cables. Use the Left and Right outputs for stereo output. If you require mono, configure this in the TEO-5\u2019s Global Settings on the front panel\u2019s display, and use either jack for output.     Pedal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Connect an expression pedal (purchased separately) with a 1\/4-inch TRS connector. You can configure the pedal to modulate one of a variety of parameters, such as filter cutoff frequency or volume.     Footswitch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Connect a footswitch (purchased separately) with a 1\/4-inch TS connector. Configure the TEO-5 to use the footswitch as a sustain pedal, to latch the Arpeggiator, or to start and stop the Sequencer.     MIDI In, Out, and Thru<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Connect standard 5-pin DIN MIDI cables for MIDI control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    USB<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Connect a USB Type B data cable for MIDI over USB to your host computer. The TEO-5 is class compliant, meaning it requires no drivers for macOS or Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Set Up the TEO-5 and Start Playing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    With the power turned off and the Master Volume control turned all the way down, connect your audio outputs. Turn on the TEO-5, then turn up the volume on your amp, your mixer, or your powered speakers. Turn up the Master Volume on the TEO-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Calibration: Tune the Oscillators and Filters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Because the Oberheim TEO-5 is an analog synth, it requires calibration in order for the oscillators and filters to remain stable. The calibration procedure enables the TEO-5 to acclimate to the range of temperatures in your playing environment. If the tuning drifts and the filters behave unpredictably, you may need to repeat the procedure over the first few days of using your TEO-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Press the Global<\/strong> settings button.<\/li>
    2. Turn the Select<\/strong> knob to bring up Cal Voices<\/strong> on the display screen.<\/li>
    3. Press the Write<\/strong> button.<\/li>
    4. Wait while the TEO-5 performs the calibration procedure. It\u2019s finished when the front panel\u2019s controls return to normal.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Audition the Factory Sounds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Let\u2019s play through the amazing sounds that come from the factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The TEO-5 has 512 presets grouped into two sets, Factory<\/strong> and User<\/strong>. The 256 Factory presets cannot be overwritten. The 256 User presets are initially identical to the Factory set, but you can overwrite them to save your own presets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A preset can have two elements: a synthesizer patch and a sequence. With each Factory preset you call up, press the Sequencer\u2019s Play<\/strong> button to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You can call up presets using the Factory<\/strong> and Bank<\/strong> buttons, the 16 numbered Program Select<\/strong> buttons, and the Manual<\/strong> button on the bottom right of the control panel. The LED display next to the Bank button shows a program number; with each program you call up, the display screen at the top shows the name and more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To select a preset, hold down the Bank<\/strong> button and press one of the Program Select<\/strong> buttons (1\u20138). Then release the Bank button and press one of the Program Select buttons (1\u20138) to select one of the 16 presets in that bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Create Your First Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Start with the Basic Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
      1. Under Settings<\/strong>, press the Global<\/strong> button.<\/li>
      2. Use the Select<\/strong> knob to scroll to Basic Program<\/strong> on the display.<\/li>
      3. Press the Write<\/strong> button.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        You\u2019ve now got a sawtooth setting on the first oscillator, plus basic filter, envelope, and simple settings for the modulation wheel and pitch wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        You can now move through the signal path and change settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Where\u2019s the Mixer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        To set the levels of Oscillator 1<\/strong>, Oscillator 2<\/strong>, the Sub-Oscillator<\/strong>, and the Noise<\/strong> generator, access the mixer functions using the buttons in the Filter<\/strong> section in conjunction with the value on the display screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Toggle an oscillator on by pressing its button; it\u2019s now at full volume.<\/li>
        2. Hold down the button, then look up at the value on the display screen. Turn the Value<\/strong> knob to lower the volume.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          The signal then passes to the Filter section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Work Through the Signal Path<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          The Filter<\/strong> section acts on the Oscillators; try turning the Resonance<\/strong> and Cutoff<\/strong> knobs while you play a note. Additional filter parameters are available in the Program<\/strong> menu on the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The Envelope <\/strong>section provides one envelope for the filter and one for amplitude. Each has a Velocity<\/strong> button to enable key velocity to influence filter cutoff frequency or amplitude volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The LFO<\/strong> section provides two low-frequency oscillators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Modulation Matrix<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          The Mod<\/strong> section has two buttons, Source<\/strong> and Destination<\/strong>. Hold down the Source<\/strong> button, select a parameter knob, and turn it. Then hold down the Destination<\/strong> button and turn a different parameter knob. In this way, you can choose from 19 sources and 65 destinations. Then go to the display screen to set the amount of modulation with the Value<\/strong> knob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          Choose from two digital effects. Select the first effect\u2019s Type<\/strong> from the choices on the display screen. The second effect is Reverb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Save Your Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          You must save your program to a User bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Press the Write<\/strong> button.<\/li>
          2. Hold down the Bank<\/strong> button. Press a Program Selector<\/strong> button to specify the \u201chundreds\u201d bank.<\/li>
          3. Release the Bank<\/strong> button, then press a Program Selector<\/strong> button (1\u201316).<\/li>
          4. Press the Write<\/strong> button again. The program is saved.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Chapter 3: Creating Sounds<\/strong> in the User\u2019s Guide has tutorials on creating bass, brass, string, and lead sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Live Panel Mode (Manual)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

            When you switch to Live Panel<\/strong> mode, the values of each knob and switch on the synth are what you see on the panel, rather than the settings on a current preset. This helps you learn each function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Enter Live Panel mode by pressing the Manual<\/strong> button in the lower-right-hand corner of the panel. Enjoy turning some knobs and listening to the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You can toggle the mode off by pressing the Manual<\/strong> button again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Arpeggiator and Step Sequencer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            The TEO-5 has a multi-mode arpeggiator and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer. You can save a sequence with each program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
