From time to time, BOSS will release a new version of the Katana Gen 3 firmware. It will fix bugs and may add new features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you are working with the newest version of the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 app<\/strong> on your computer, and on startup you get the message \u201cYou are using an older version of Katana Gen 3. Update to the latest version<\/strong>,\u201d you must update the firmware in order to use the app. BOSS refers to the firmware as the System Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 Quickstart Guide<\/p>

Installing Boss Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 on Your Computer<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n

When you run the app with your Katana Gen 3 connected and the app does not give you the error message about your Katana Gen 3 having an older version, then you don\u2019t need to read any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you need to install the update, here\u2019s the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepare for the Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Updating the System Program on the Katana Gen 3 does not involve using the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 app, so go ahead and quit it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disconnect the USB-C data cable from your Katana Gen 3. Shut your Katana down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Download the System Program Updater<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT:<\/strong> Double-check to make sure that you are on the Katana Gen 3<\/strong> download page. You must download the Katana3 System Program<\/strong>, and not the System Program for the original Katana or the Katana Mk II. Your Katana may be left in an inoperable state requiring repair if you accidentally update with the wrong System Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. On your computer, go to the BOSS Katana Gen 3 Updates & Drivers page<\/a>. Click on the Katana3<\/strong> System Program<\/strong> link. This will take you to a BOSS page with detailed instructions. Please review them. Now scroll down to the bottom of the page, check \u201cI agree and wish to proceed with download,\u201d and click Download File<\/strong>.<\/li>
  2. The file will download to your computer. It will be in compressed .zip format. Locate the file.<\/li>
  3. If necessary, extract the file. The result is a folder named in the form of katana3_sys_vXXX<\/strong>, depending on the version number. Inside the folder are two files, KATANA3.BIN<\/strong> and ROMINFO.TXT<\/strong>. Do not rename these files. They are the files you will upload to the Katana Gen 3 in the subsequent steps.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Connect the Katana Gen 3 to Your Computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    1. With your Katana shut down, disconnect everything except the power cable. Do not connect the USB-C data cable to your computer yet.<\/li>
    2. Turn the Master<\/strong> knob to minimum.<\/li>
    3. Find the Tap<\/strong> button in the Effects<\/strong> section. While holding down the Tap button, turn the Power<\/strong> switch on. The Effects LEDs will flash red.<\/li>
    4. Connect the USB-C data cable from your Katana to your computer. A new drive icon named KATANA3<\/strong> will appear in My Programs on Windows or in the Finder on macOS.<\/li>
    5. Copy both files from the update folder, KATANA3.BIN<\/strong> and ROMINFO.TXT<\/strong>, to the root of the KATANA3 drive. Copy the files themselves; do not copy the folder that contains the files.<\/li>
    6. Perform the Eject<\/strong> command on your Mac or PC to safely dismount the Katana drive. On Windows, right-click on the KATANA3 icon and choose Eject<\/strong>. On macOS, you can command-click or right-click on the KATANA3 icon and choose Eject<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Perform the Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      IMPORTANT<\/strong>: Do not turn off the power to your Katana Gen 3 while the update is in progress. You could \u201cbrick\u201d your unit, requiring you to send it to BOSS for non-warranty repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Disconnect the USB-C cable. This will start the update process.<\/li>
      2. The update takes several minutes. You can tell it is in progress because the row of Effects button LEDs will blink in sequence, from red to orange.<\/li>
      3. The update is complete when the LEDs all blink green simultaneously. When this happens, turn off the power and turn it back on. The update is complete.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        To verify that the System Program has been updated, connect your Katana Gen 3 to your computer and run the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 app. If it does not prompt you that you are \u201cusing an older version,\u201d then you\u2019re good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
