You\u2019ll get access to BOSS product support, an extended warranty, training videos, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Log in to your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/backstage\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland Backstage account<\/a>. If you don\u2019t have one yet, you can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/backstage\/signup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">create one here<\/a>.<\/li><li>On your account home page, click&nbsp;<strong>My Gear<\/strong>, then select&nbsp;<strong>Register a Product<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Fill out the required information, including the serial number that is located on the back of the Katana, and click&nbsp;<strong>Register<\/strong>. Keep your Sweetwater invoice handy, as you will need to enter the purchase date, method, and dealer (Sweetwater).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Download-the-Manuals\">Download the Manuals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Katana, it\u2019s easy to plug in a guitar and start playing. But the Katana has a great deal of features, and tons of effects, that you can\u2019t access from the control panel. While you are on the BOSS website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boss.info\/us\/support\/by_product\/katana_artist_gen_3\/owners_manuals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download the owner\u2019s manuals and guides<\/a>. You\u2019ll need them for reference. Look for these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Katana 3 Startup Guide<\/li><li>Katana 3 Reference Manual<\/li><li>Using BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 (for PC)<\/li><li>Using BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 (for mobile)<\/li><li>Connecting the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 iOS App to the Katana Unit<\/li><li>Connecting the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 Android App to the Katana Unit<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Setup-and-Connections\">Setup and Connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Katana Gen 3 family contains many models, and not all of them have the same features on the control panel. A preset is an amp model, several effects both before and after the amp model, settings for speaker cab and microphone modeling, settings for the functions of external footswitches and expression pedals (sold separately), and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Katana Gen 3 50 and 50 EX give you two banks, A and B, of two presets each. The other Katana models give you two banks of four presets each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each preset calls up sounds set to specific parameters without respect to the actual position of the knobs on your Katana. You can further modify settings by turning knobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Panel<\/strong> button switches modes so that all the parameters are set to the actual position of each knob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Amplifier<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Select from six preamplifier models. The <strong>Variation<\/strong> button gives you a different sound for each model. <strong>Gain<\/strong> adjusts preamplifier level, introducing distortion. <strong>Volume<\/strong> is for the amp model. (To the right, there is another <strong>Master<\/strong> volume knob for the entire signal chain.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Equalizer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjust the <strong>Bass<\/strong>, <strong>Middle<\/strong>, and <strong>Treble<\/strong> controls. The <strong>Contour<\/strong> button gives you three alternate midrange settings, with LEDs that light green, red, and orange and turn off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Resonance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes the definition of the low-frequency range on the amp model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Presence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjusts the mid- to high-frequency range on the amp model to improve the definition of the sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Solo<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Provides controls for a preset solo boost, which you can engage by pressing the Solo button or using an external footswitch (sold separately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Power Control<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Set the Katana\u2019s power amplifier to standby, 0.5 watts, half the rated output, or the full output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Cab Resonance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Three settings model the resonance of different speaker cabinets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Line Out<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Switch between different settings to model virtual microphones on the virtual speaker when you send a line-out signal to a PA system or an audio interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Katana Gen 3 50 and 50 EX, you can access the Line Out parameters using the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Effects<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Each preset stored in the Katana has effects assigned in the categories <strong>Booster<\/strong>, <strong>Mod<\/strong>, <strong>FX<\/strong>, <strong>Delay<\/strong>, and <strong>Reverb<\/strong>. Adjust the intensity of each effect with its knob. The buttons are also LEDs. Pressing them toggles between three different effects in each category, lighting up in green, red, and orange. Learn more in the <a href=\"https:\/\/static.roland.com\/assets\/media\/pdf\/KTN3_reference_eng01_W.pdf#page=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katana 3 Reference Manual &gt; Using the effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that when you connect your Katana to the <strong>BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 app<\/strong>, you can choose from dozens of effects, control the parameters for each one, and save your own presets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Tap<\/strong> button lets you set a tap tempo for a time-based effect. You can also control this from a footswitch (sold separately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Global EQ<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn the global equalizer for the entire signal chain on and off. Using the app, you can configure three different global EQ settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Master<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the master volume for the entire signal chain. Do not use a shielded guitar instrument cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more in the <a href=\"https:\/\/static.roland.com\/assets\/media\/pdf\/KTN3_reference_eng01_W.pdf#page=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katana 3 Reference Manual &gt; Panel descriptions &gt; Rear panel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Foot Control<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Katana Gen 3 50 can accept a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/FS6--boss-fs-6-dual-foot-switch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS FS-6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/FS7--boss-fs-7-dual-foot-switch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FS-7<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/FS5L--boss-fs-5l-latching-footswitch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FS-5L<\/a> footswitch (sold separately) to switch between Channel 1 and Channel 2 and engage the Solo function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other Katana Gen 3 models can accept the footswitches listed above in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/GAFC--boss-ga-fc-foot-controller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS GA-FC<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/GAFCEX--boss-ga-fc-ex-foot-controller-for-boss-katana-amplifiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GA-FC EX<\/a> multi-footswitch units to change channels and engage effects. These footswitches can in turn accept one or more Boss or Roland expression pedals for real-time control of many effects parameters. The functions can be programmed in the BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Exp Pedal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/EV30--boss-ev-30-dual-expression-pedal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS EV-30<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/FV500L--boss-fv-500l-foot-volume-pedal-low-impedance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FV-500L<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/EV5--roland-ev-5-expression-pedal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland EV-5<\/a> expression pedal (sold separately) directly to this jack to control the volume, wah, or pitch bend parameters, as configured in the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>MIDI In<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a 5-pin DIN MIDI cable to an external MIDI controller for additional control options. The effect loop can be engaged by an external footswitch, configured in the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Bluetooth Adapter Jack<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To use Bluetooth for external audio auxiliary input, or to control your amp with the <strong>BTS for Katana Gen 3 app<\/strong> for iPhone, iPad, and Android, you need to install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/BTDual--boss-bt-dual-bluetooth-audio-midi-dual-adapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS BT-Dual Audio MIDI adapter<\/a> (sold separately). The jack is beneath the plastic plug labeled \u201cBOSS.\u201d Learn more in our SweetCare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/boss-tone-studio-for-katana-gen-3-quickstart-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BOSS Tone Studio for Katana Gen 3 Quickstart Guid<strong>e<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Aux In<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a 1\/8-inch stereo TRS cable to an external device for analog audio auxiliary input to play practice tracks through your Katana\u2019s speaker and to monitor over headphones so you can play along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Stereo Phones<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect headphones using a 1\/4-inch TRS cable. Be sure to turn the <strong>Master<\/strong> volume control all the way down before connecting them. Connecting headphones will mute the power amplifier\u2019s output to the built-in speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Line Out<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a 1\/4-inch TS cable to connect this mono output to a PA system or an audio interface. Some models also have a balanced XLR output and a ground lift switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Power Amp In<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect a 1\/4-inch TS cable to input sound from an external preamp. The Katana will only work as a power amp and a speaker, and all controls will be deactivated except the Master knob and the Power Control switch. You can\u2019t use the Input jack on the front panel; if you plug something into the Input, the Power Amp In signal will be defeated and the amp will operate as normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Stereo Expand<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn this switch on to bridge two Katana Gen 3 units for stereo live sound. Connect a 1\/4-inch TS mono cable to the Line Out jack of the first amp (to which your guitar is connected) and run it to the Power Amp In on the second Katana amp.
