After it\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/bfd-software-activation-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registered and installed<\/a>, you can launch the standalone BFD3 application or load it as a virtual instrument track in your DAW. Most functions remain the same whether the BFD3 is working as a plug-in or a standalone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to practice along with some music or you need a quick arrangement, the desktop application is preferred. However, if you plan on recording, use BFD3 as a virtual instrument plug-in.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Set Up Electronic Drums and Controllers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f3f2f1\"><strong>NOTE:&nbsp;<\/strong>You only need to update MIDI and audio settings when using the BFD3 desktop application. Let\u2019s cover the basic menus to get you up and running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"#Presets\"><strong>Presets<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Kits\"><strong>Kits<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Drums\"><strong>Drums<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#Grooves\">Grooves<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Presets\">Presets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Presets are a great starting point when you\u2019re creating kits for specific genres. Loading a preset will auto-populate specific drums, grooves, and mixer levels, giving you a great baseline on where to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Double-click or drag the preset over to the Kit display to load it.<\/li><li>You will see a progress bar above the drum\/cymbal indicating how long it takes for that piece to load. So, if you don\u2019t hear a specific kit piece when you first load a BFD preset, it\u2019s likely because the sample has yet to finish loading.<\/li><li>Use the filters beneath the search bar to include or exclude what you want to import. For example, click both&nbsp;<strong>Kit<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Groove<\/strong>&nbsp;if you only want a preset kit and groove. It will only load the kit and groove, not the preset mix, the automation, or the keymap.<ul><li>The&nbsp;<strong>Mix&nbsp;<\/strong>filter will only work if the&nbsp;<strong>Grv<\/strong>&nbsp;(groove) is also included.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Kits\">Kits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BFD3 comes with over 50 high-quality drum kits that are fully editable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Library<\/strong>&nbsp;to view all the installed kit collections.<\/li><li>Right-click the selected drum kit to mark it as a favorite, show what filters it is tagged for, and view the kit file in your OS Explorer folder.<\/li><li>Double-click or drag the kit over to the kit image to load it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Drums\">Drums<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The base version of BFD3 includes over 100 drum samples, so you have plenty of flexibility when editing or building your drum kit. We\u2019ll discuss drums more below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Grooves\">Grooves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BFD3 has preset grooves for every genre imaginable. These grooves not only give you a good idea of what a kit sounds like together, but they can also inspire you during the writing process!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FXpansion BFD3 Tutorial 01 - Overview\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sX1ECZ_-ayI?wmode=transparent&amp;rel=0&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>BFD3 Tutorial 01 &#8211; Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"How-to-Create-a-Drum-Kit-in-BFD3\">How to Create a Drum Kit in BFD3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the BFD3 factory preset drum kits are fantastic, you can also edit them or create your own to get a unique sound. They have made it very easy, too, so you\u2019ll spend less time menu diving and more time playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>If you\u2019ve loaded a preset kit and only want to change the sample of one piece, click the&nbsp;<strong>Drums&nbsp;<\/strong>tab, then use the filters to find the drum or cymbal you want.<\/li><li>After you have found the sample, double-click or drag and drop it into the associated drum in the Kit view window.<ul><li>If you drag it over anywhere besides the drum piece you are replacing, you will receive a prompt asking if you wish to add an additional piece.<\/li><li>Right-click anywhere in the Kit view window to build a kit from scratch. Choose <strong>Clear Kit<\/strong>, and all drums will be grayed out.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>You can add additional drums to a kit by clicking and dragging the drum sample to an empty space on the kit display. When you do so, another kit piece should appear.<ul><li>If you want both samples to be triggered simultaneously, click&nbsp;<strong>Link<\/strong>, then drag the line from the selected drum to the other drum you want to trigger.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4>Can I Import Custom Samples in BFD3?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>BFD allows you to import custom .<strong>WAV<\/strong>&nbsp;samples, but there are a few caveats. There can only be one articulation, they can only produce sound in the direct Sound bus (the microphones or ambience cannot be applied), and only one channel is active for the imported sample (unless it\u2019s loaded on the Kick1 or Snare1 slot). Also, while samples can be mono or stereo, you cannot combine the two in the same imported sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Move your&nbsp;<strong>.WAV&nbsp;<\/strong>sample to the library location where you installed your BFD samples.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Drums<\/strong>, click&nbsp;<strong>File<\/strong>, and select&nbsp;<strong>Import sample\u2026<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Choose the samples you want to import, use the&nbsp;<em>Drum Type<\/em>drop-down box, name the drum, and click&nbsp;<strong>Import<\/strong>. If this is the case, the profile performance may be set too high. Go to the <em>Preferences<\/em> menu, choose&nbsp;<strong>Engine<\/strong>, and use the&nbsp;<em>Profile<\/em>&nbsp;drop-down box to change it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing your BFD3 libraries and data is critical to the software working correctly. The sound libraries can be quite large, so it\u2019s recommended that you store everything on a dedicated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/search?s=ssd+hard+drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">external SSD<\/a>&nbsp;with at least 200GB of free space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To add additional folder paths to BFD3, click&nbsp;<strong>Tools<\/strong>, select&nbsp;<strong>Set up content locations<\/strong>, then choose&nbsp;<strong>Search Folders<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Search Drives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>If you know the exact folder path, choose <strong>Search Folder<\/strong>. If you\u2019re unsure of the folder path, but you know on what drive your content is stored, choose <strong>Search Drives<\/strong>. The process may take a moment since it will scan all folders, so be patient!<\/li><li>Always select the root folder where your content is stored. If your BFD content folder has multiple subfolders, choose the BFD content folder.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BFD3 has different file types for grooves, drum samples, and other data, so keeping track of these will ensure you don\u2019t run into any issues.
