Congratulations on your new euphonium <\/a>or baritone horn<\/a> from Sweetwater. Here is how to take good care of your instrument so that it will be easy to play. Let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT:<\/strong> In all things regarding your new euphonium or baritone horn, ask your band director or private teacher to show you how something is done before you try it at home. As thy show you how to play the instrument, they will be able to answer your questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Euphonium and Baritone: What’s the Difference?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The euphonium and baritone are similar instruments that come from neighboring branches of the musical instrument family tree. Caring for either instrument is the same, so we wrote one guide to cover both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Euphonium and Baritone Accessories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Sweetwater Low Brass Care Kit<\/a> provides you with the basics to lubricate and clean your horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The care kit includes a vinyl pouch you can put your mouthpiece in when not using it to play. You can also use a more durable neoprene or cloth mouthpiece pouch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For a more comfortable grip on your right hand, ask your teacher about using a rubber brass wrap<\/a> on your instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You can rest your instrument in its case when you take a break from playing, but you can also get a special euphonium\/baritone stand<\/a> to hold it upright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Euphonium and Baritone Daily Care and Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Empty the Water Key<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Your horn has one or more water keys. As you play your instrument, condensation builds up inside it, resulting in a gurgling sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Carefully press on the water key\u2019s lever, then gently blow into your horn. The water will come out quickly, so make sure to empty it above a waste bin or place a towel on the ground to dispose of the water without making a mess. Make sure not to blow too hard; if you do, the water will blow right past the key and won\u2019t drain out. If your horn has a water key on each slide, press the valve connected to a particular slide before opening its water key, then blow while holding the valve down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wipe It Down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Use a microfiber cloth to wipe off fingerprints and the places where you handle the instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weekly Care and Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Clean the Mouthpiece and Leadpipe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Each week, carefully wash your mouthpiece in warm water with a little dish soap. Clean it out on the inside using the brass mouthpiece brush from your care kit, then rinse with clean water. Dry the mouthpiece off with a towel. Carefully put the mouthpiece back in your instrument case or your mouthpiece pouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Holding your instrument on your lap, use the snake brush from your cleaning kit to clean out the inside of the leadpipe. Wet the snake brush before using it so that it does not scratch the inside of the pipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Oil the Valves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The steps to oil the valves on your euphonium or baritone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Each valve needs to be oiled no more than once a week. Don\u2019t overdo it, or the valves will stick. Ask your teacher to show you how to oil the valves before you try it yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Use the brass instrument valve oil that comes in your care kit. Sit the horn on your lap. For each valve, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Use your fingers to unscrew the cap below the valve button.<\/li>
    2. Pull the valve up halfway; don\u2019t pull it all the way out.<\/li>
    3. Place four drops of valve oil around the outside of the valve.<\/li>
    4. Carefully slide the valve back into place. There is a tab that fits into a groove in the casing.<\/li>
    5. Screw the cap back into place.<\/li>
    6. Repeat for the other valves.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Once your valves are back in place, blow into the horn to make sure each valve is seated correctly. You will know if something is wrong with a valve because the air won\u2019t be able to get through. If that\u2019s the case, unscrew the valve cap and reseat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Grease the Tuning Slides<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      IMPORTANT:<\/strong> Never use any kind of pliers or tool to remove the slides. If they won\u2019t come out easily, take your instrument to your teacher and ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Steps to grease the tuning slides on your euphonium or baritone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Each tuning slide needs to have slide grease applied to it every week or two. Use the stick of slide grease in your care kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Pull the slide all the way out. Carefully note which end is longer than the other.<\/li>
      2. Apply grease to the exposed ends.<\/li>
      3. Be careful to insert the slide back into the tubing with the slide turned the way it came out, not flipped over backwards. Slide it back in, then move the slide in and out a bit to evenly distribute the slide grease.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        The Snake Brush and the Valve Brush<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        The Sweetwater Low Brass Care Kit<\/a> comes with a snake brush <\/strong>and a valve brush<\/strong>, both of which are used to clean out the sections of the instrument\u2019s brass tubing that you can reach when it is disassembled and soaked in a bath. Don\u2019t try to clean your instrument in this fashion until you have discussed it with your teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Annual Care and Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Take your instrument to a local music repair shop once a year. The shop will do an inspection and make any necessary adjustments. Your instrument will come back playing and sounding its best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At any time, if you feel that your instrument isn\u2019t playing properly, ask your teacher.
