Your French horn is a big investment, so you want to make sure it\u2019s in pristine condition for the long haul. Improper care and maintenance (or lack thereof) can lead to issues such as corrosion, sticky rotors and slides, and grime. These can all shorten the life of your French horn and increase the chances of a costly repair. If you follow these instructions, your horn will look and sound brand-new for years to come!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Daily Care and Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Daily care of your French horn takes less than five minutes and can set you up for success in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Empty the Condensation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    TIP: <\/strong>When removing a slide, hold the associated valve down. This releases pressure so the slide doesn\u2019t cause a popping sound. That pop is a vacuum being created and then \u201csnapping\u201d as the air pressure rushes in to fill the vacuum. This will eventually cause a loss of what\u2019s called \u201ccompression\u201d within the instrument, which will cause the instrument to leak air!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Condensation builds up while you play. If you don\u2019t empty the water, it will result in a gurgling sound, which isn\u2019t very pleasant. While French horns are resilient, leaving water in the horn for an extended period may increase the chance of corrosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Emptying condensation from your French horn is simple: dump the water into a hand towel or a small piece of Tupperware, press and hold the third valve key, and rotate the horn around like you\u2019re turning a steering wheel. You should see some water come out of the bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If there is still some water in your sound or if you don\u2019t see any coming out of the bell, remove the third valve slides and empty them. Remove and empty out the main Bb and F tuning slides to ensure you get all the water out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Make sure you empty any water into the Tupperware, on a towel, or in a garbage bin. Emptying it directly on the floor is unprofessional, and you or a bandmate may slip when walking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Oil the Rotors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    IMPORTANT! <\/strong>There are different oils for each part of the rotor. These oils have different viscosities, so it\u2019s important to know what oil to put where. Ask your private music teacher or your band director how to apply them, and they will be able to answer your questions and give you advice about using the correct lubricants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While there are a few different trains of thought, we recommend oiling the rotors once every week or two. This ensures the smooth operation of the rotors during your practice or performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This guide will teach you how to oil the rotor only. Ask your private music teacher or your band director for specific details and instructions on lubricating the other parts of the French horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Remove the valve cap to expose the rotor.<\/li>
    2. Put one drop of rotor oil <\/strong>on the center of the rotor and continuously press the valve key. This will help work the oil in.<\/li>
    3. Flip the French horn upside down and pull the valve slide (so you\u2019re pulling the slide down<\/em>) while holding the valve key down to release air pressure.  <\/li>
    4. Place a drop of oil within it.<\/li>
    5. Reinsert the valve slide, flip it around (so the valve slide is pointing up<\/em>), and continuously press the valve key to work the oil in.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Wipe It Down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      This is self-explanatory. Before you put your French horn back in its case, wipe it down with a microfiber- or polish cloth, like the one in the Sweetwater French Horn Care Kit<\/a>.
