The first Mac with an Apple silicon M1 chip was released in late 2020. The new Mac with Apple silicon computers provide a level of system integration between hardware and software that leverages much more computing power, and that’s a really big deal for content creators.

In 2023, Apple discontinued the last models of Mac with Intel processors. Now, all new Mac computers use an Apple silicon chip. So far, Apple has released four series of Apple silicon chips: the M1, M2, M3, and M4.

As of 2025, we are still in a transitional time where some content creators still own an Intel-based Mac, while many are replacing older computers with new Mac with Apple silicon computers. Content creators use a lot of third-party software; the various apps they own may be a combination of older software written for Intel and newer software that is Apple silicon native.

Since the first model of Mac with Apple silicon arrived, the macOS and all the apps made by Apple are provided in new versions with code written specifically to run on Apple silicon. To maintain compatibility, macOS provides a means by which the older, Intel-based apps can run on the new Apple silicon chip. Rosetta is a service called a dynamic translator. When you launch an app written for Intel, Rosetta translates the Intel code in real time so that it runs on Apple silicon.

Learn more in this Apple support article: If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac.

Intel apps operating through Rosetta work well enough, but they don’t take full advantage of the processing power of Apple silicon. Pro audio, music, and video apps involve digital signal processing; you want to use all the power available and ensure that all apps and plug-ins are compatible.

Apple silicon native and Universal Binary Software

Fortunately, third-party developers have been busy rewriting their apps and plug-ins to be Apple silicon native. Simply put, the newly updated apps can use the Apple silicon chip to process audio and video much faster than before. DAWs can run a lot more processor-intensive plug-ins.

In this transitional time, new apps written for Apple silicon often contain both kinds of code, code for Intel and Apple silicon, bundled into the same app. This kind of app is called Universal binary, or Universal for short, and it aids in compatibility.

Updating Your Apps

If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, ideally, you want all your third-party apps and plug-ins to be Apple silicon native.

With any app you run, if it has a “Check for Updates” feature, give it a try. You should also visit the website of the developer to find out if it has released a new version that is both compatible with the version of macOS you are running and also Apple silicon native. Update everything that’s compatible.

Sweetwater’s SweetCare macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility Guide is your up-to-date resource for support information for over 200 manufacturers and developers of Mac music and audio software. (On an Intel-based Mac, such an app will not run at all.)

An app labeled Universal, from Apple or a third-party developer, is the kind you encounter most often. It’s a bundle that contains both code for Intel-based Mac and code for Mac with Apple silicon. The macOS will automatically choose which one to run.

As we will see, however, you may encounter situations where you need to configure a Universal app to run in Intel mode under Rosetta.

How to Identify an Individual App

If you want to have a quick look at an app on your Mac, here’s how to tell which kind it is.

In the Finder, open a new window to locate the app. In this example, we are in Lists view.

In the pane on the left, click on the Applications folder. We’ve read about some commands you can run in Terminal, but that’s a lot of extra work. Some DAWs will provide information on the type of code that the plug-in uses when you select it within the DAW. The best way to find out is to visit the developer’s website support section, read the specifications, and contact them if you need further information. Remember to check the SweetCare macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility Guide.

Working with Intel Plug-ins in a DAW That’s Universal

There’s a major issue for those who record with a DAW (digital audio workstation app).

Most of us music makers on the Mac platform have a DAW from Apple, such as Logic Pro or GarageBand, or a third-party app, such as Pro Tools, Studio One, or Cubase, and we also have a lot of plug-ins from many different developers.

If you have a DAW that is Apple silicon native and call up a plug-in within the DAW, but the plug-in is written for Intel, then the plug-in may not work inside the DAW.

Fortunately, there is a workaround. With a DAW that is Universal, you can use a setting that causes the app to run with the Intel code using Rosetta. Once you start the DAW in this mode, you can run all your plug-ins that are otherwise compatible, both Intel-based and Apple silicon native, within the DAW.

To enable this, go to the Finder, select the app, and choose Get Info as we explained above.

If the app is Universal, under the copyright notice, you will see the option Open using Rosetta. Check this box. Then, close the Info window.

Selecting Open using Rosetta in the Get Info window of a Universal app

From now on, when you launch this app, it will run in Intel mode using Rosetta.

If you want to run the app in Apple silicon native mode, quit the app, go back to the Finder, choose Get Info, and uncheck the box.

Consult the support section of your DAW developer’s website for more information.

Learn More About Optimizing Your Mac for Audio, Music, and Content Creation

Sweetwater is your source for everything in music, pro audio, and more.
