    To understand how noise cancellation works, you need to know what noise and sound are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sound is the audible result of changes in pressure in the form of peaks and valleys, just like a wave. The higher the peaks and valleys, the louder the audio signal is. The longer the sound wave cycle is, the lower the frequency (pitch). Think of it as tossing a rock in a lake. If you gently place the rock down, it will form a small ripple.     When it comes to noise-canceling headphones, the most frequently asked question is, \u201cHow does noise canceling work?\u201d The short answer is that it depends. When you\u2019re listening to music or a podcast with noise-canceling headphones, the sound goes through a process called phase inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When you invert the phase on a sound wave, it \u2018flips\u2019 (inverts) the sound wave itself. Since the sound waves are opposites, the incoming noise will be canceled out. To better understand, look at the images and listen to the audio clips below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the image on the left, the two sound waves mirror each other; their peaks and valleys are the same. In its audio clip, you can hear humming. On the right, one of the sound waves is flipped, so the peaks and valleys are the exact opposite. In that audio clip, there is complete silence. That is phase cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is one caveat, however: although noise-canceling headphones can block out most ambient noise, they won\u2019t block everything out, meaning they are not 100% soundproof. Unless you\u2019re in a vacuum where no air is present, some frequencies will always pop through, even if it\u2019s just the slightest bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Environmental Noise Cancellation is found in headsets and earbuds with talkback functionality (like AirPods<\/a>). The built-in microphones you speak through will detect external (environmental) sounds and create an opposing sound wave, filtering the unwanted noise. Think of it as sifting through sand when you find a piece of treasure at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What\u2019s the Difference Between ANC and ENC?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
