So, in this guide, we will discuss what RAM is and how to install it in a PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"#What-Does-RAM-Do?\"><strong>What Does RAM Do?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#What-RAM-Is-Compatible-with-My-PC?\"><strong>What RAM Is Compatible with My PC?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#How-to-Install-RAM-in-PC\">How to Install RAM in a PC<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"What-Does-RAM-Do?\">What Does RAM Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you learn how to install RAM, it\u2019s good to know what RAM is and how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, RAM (Random Access Memory) is short-term memory that assists your computer in handling tasks like launching applications, playing video games, recording music, or working with video and photo editing software. It also allows you to switch between processes while remembering where the current process is. For example, if you launch your browser while you have video editing software running, RAM is responsible for switching to the new process in a timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s use the kitchen example discussed in our guide&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/pc-processors-explained\/#What-does-a-processor-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PC Processors Explained<\/a>. The data (food in the refrigerator) is placed on the countertop (RAM). If you have a bigger countertop (more RAM), you can quickly access and prep more food (data). All motherboards are different, and some require specific types of sticks to work correctly. Some motherboards may have unique RAM stick slot types, whereas others may run on a different protocol and pin layout (e.g.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DDR5_SDRAM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DDR5<\/a>&nbsp;vs.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DDR4_SDRAM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DDR4<\/a>). Also, different manufacturers may use different circuit board circuits, etc., so using RAM sticks from the same manufacturer is recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing this, you may ask yourself, \u201cHow do I know what RAM is compatible with my Windows PC?\u201d The easiest way to check what motherboard you have is to check your owner\u2019s manual to see what RAM type is compatible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot install RAM rated higher than your motherboard can handle. For example, if your motherboard can accept up to 32GB of RAM, you cannot install 64GB worth of RAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What motherboard do I have?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure of what motherboard you have, the easiest way to learn is to view it in&nbsp;<em>System Information.&nbsp;<\/em>To do this, open the Windows start menu, then type&nbsp;<strong>System Information<\/strong>. Once disconnected, we highly recommend you wait a minute or two so the machine has time to discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know what RAM is, how it works, and what RAM sticks are compatible with your motherboard, we will show you how to install RAM on your PC. Please note that you must install your RAM sticks in the correct slots!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Locate the RAM slot on your motherboard.<\/li><li>Push down the locking tab(s) at the end of each slot.<\/li><li>Line up the RAM stick with the slot, ensuring that the notch of the RAM stick matches that of the slots. Be sure that it\u2019s centered between the latch locks.<\/li><li>Push down the RAM stick straight down until it makes a clicking sound. It may take a little bit of force, but don\u2019t worry! This is normal.<\/li><li>Once you hear the click, the RAM should be fully seated. This means the RAM stick configuration will be A1, B1, A2, and B2. Some motherboards will be labeled as DIMM_A1, DIMM_B1, DIMM_A2, and DIMM_B2. They may be color coded, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Installing them in the correct channel slots, starting with&nbsp;<strong>channel A<\/strong>, is important. For example, if you install two RAM sticks, you must install them in the&nbsp;<strong>A2&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>B2<\/strong>&nbsp;slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you install the two RAM sticks in&nbsp;<strong>A1&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>A2<\/strong>, your RAM will use a single channel, so you won\u2019t get optimal performance. By installing one stick in&nbsp;<strong>A2<\/strong>&nbsp;and the other in&nbsp;<strong>B2<\/strong>, the memory is spread out between both channels, so your PC will run much more smoothly, and you won\u2019t run into any potential boot errors.
