Midas and Behringer are two brands from the same company, Music Tribe.

Behringer X32 tutorials apply equally to the Midas M32 because the two products are laid out and are operated in the same fashion, though certain buttons and knobs may be in different locations.

From time to time, Behringer and Midas release a new version of the M32 and X32 operating system through a firmware update. As of this writing, the M32 and X32 use Version 4.0x, first released in late 2019.

TIP: Many X32 and M32 tutorial videos you find online were made years before late 2019. The mixers in those videos are running earlier versions of the operating system. Their display screens may have menus and controls laid out in a different order, with a different color scheme. However, the information they provide is still useful.

Setup and Connections

The M32 is a digital mixer. Analog microphone and audio signals are converted to the digital domain. A digital mixer has the advantages of digital routing, recallable settings, onboard effects processors, and remote control. Digital audio processed through the mixer is then converted back to analog audio and output to amplifiers and speakers.

For basic connections, the M32 Live and the M32R Live have built-in XLR and 1/4-inch TRS jacks for analog audio inputs. They can also accept additional channels of digital audio from stage boxes, such as the Midas DL16 and DL32, which connect to the AES50 ports using Ethercon cables. These are Cat 5e Ethernet cables with rugged connector plugs.

The M32 Live and M32R Live have display screens and knobs and faders for traditional hands-on mixer control, but they can also be remotely controlled from an app on a handheld device connected by an Ethernet router with Wi-Fi or by an app on a computer.

The M32C has no onboard connections for accepting analog audio inputs. To use it, you connect your microphones and inputs to stage boxes, which then connect to the M32C over Ethercon cables. The M32C has no physical knobs, faders, or controls and must be controlled by devices or a computer over a network router with Wi-Fi.

Navigating the Mixer: Display Screen and Channel Controls

M32 Live and M32R Live

The M32 Live and M32R Live differ in the number and layout of some faders, buttons, and encoder knobs, but both models have the same display screen with the same navigation features. The display screen is where you configure settings with the menu buttons and encoders.

Each of the M32’s channel strips has individual settings for Preamp, Gate, Dynamics, and Equalizer. However, there is only one set of buttons and knobs, in the upper left corner of the front panel, for accessing these parameters. Use the Sel button at the top of a particular channel strip to select that channel, and you can then adjust the Preamp’s input gain and other parameters for that channel.

Check out the video below for a thorough overview:

Midas M32 Digital Mix Console Review

M32C

To use the M32C, Midas provides the M32 Edit app for Mac and Windows, as well as for Linux and Raspberry Pi.
