Yamaha refers to their firmware as an <strong>Operating System<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From time to time, Yamaha releases a new Operating System Update that not only provides bug fixes and new features, but also adds new instrument sample libraries and sounds to the unit. When you first take your CP Stage Piano out of the box, it\u2019s worth checking to see if it needs to be updated. Connect your second thumb drive to your computer and copy the updater file to the thumb drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You then plug the updater thumb drive into the Yamaha CP and start the update process, which may take around half an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you connect the backup thumb drive and restore your Live Set Sounds and system settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we will provide detailed instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Do-You-Need-to-Update?\">Do You Need to Update?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"How-to-Find-the-Version-Number-of-the-Firmware-on-Your-Yamaha-CP\">How to Find the Version Number of the Firmware on Your Yamaha CP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On your Yamaha CP, press the <strong>Menu<\/strong> button.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Version Info<\/strong>. If it\u2019s a higher number than the one in your keyboard, you can perform the update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Performing-the-Update-Step-by-step\">Performing the Update Step-by-step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Formatting-Thumb-Drives\">Formatting Thumb Drives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you must format the thumb drives by connecting them to the Yamaha CP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Obtain compatible thumb drives<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most commercially available thumb drives with a USB-A connection will be compatible with the Yamaha CP. If the thumb drives you have don\u2019t seem to work, Yamaha provides a list of makes and models it has confirmed are compatible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/products\/music_production\/synthesizers\/cp88_73\/downloads.html#product-tabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yamaha CP downloads page<\/a>, under <strong>Other Downloads<\/strong>, and download the <strong>Compatible Device List<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Formatting<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to format two thumb drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffcfd3\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: Formatting the thumb drive will erase all data on it, so first check the drive on your computer to make sure it does not contain any important data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>Format the first drive<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Insert a thumb drive into the USB port on the back of the Yamaha CP.<\/li><li>On the front panel, press the <strong>Menu<\/strong> button. Use the <strong>Encoder dial<\/strong> and the <strong>Enter<\/strong> button to go to the <strong>File<\/strong> section.<\/li><li>Under the <strong>File<\/strong> section, find <strong>File Utility<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Format<\/strong>. Perform the <strong>Format<\/strong> function.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5>Back up your data<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Save your Yamaha CP\u2019s settings to the thumb drive. Refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/files\/download\/other_assets\/7\/1180527\/cp88_cp73_en_om_d0.pdf#page=23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CP Owner\u2019s Manual section Saving\/Loading Data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove the thumb drive with your data and set it aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5>Format the second drive<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Format the second drive according to the instructions above, then remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Prepare-the-Updater-on-your-Computer\">Prepare the Updater on your Computer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4>Download the Updater<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/products\/music_production\/synthesizers\/cp88_73\/downloads.html#product-tabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yamaha CP downloads page<\/a>, click on the link for the newest <strong>Operating System Updater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new page will open. At the top it will list the <strong>version history<\/strong>. Scroll down and take heed of the <strong>Caution<\/strong> note. Review the <strong>License Agreement<\/strong>, click <strong>Yes, I agree<\/strong>, and then click the download button. The file will be large, so it may take some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The download is a .zip file. Locate it in your downloads folder and decompress it if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the folder, you will see a long list of files in multiple languages. Find the ones that have<strong> _en<\/strong> in the name; they are in English. Locate these three files. (The version numbers may be different than in this example.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>cp88_cp73_v150_Readme_en.txt.<\/strong> Open this <strong>Read Me file<\/strong> for reference.<\/li><li><strong>cp88_cp73_v15_en_sm_e0.pdf.<\/strong> This is the <strong>Supplementary Manual<\/strong>, which explains the new features in this update. You will want to read this in conjunction with the <strong>Owner\u2019s Manual<\/strong> you already have.<\/li><li><strong>8S89OS_.PGM.<\/strong> This is the actual updater file, and it is over 1GB in size.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4>Copy the Updater to the Thumb Drive<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Copy only the file ending in <strong>_.PGM<\/strong> to the root of the thumb drive. Don\u2019t copy the folder, and don\u2019t copy any additional files. The copy operation may take several minutes. Wait until it is complete.<\/li><li>In the Finder on macOS, or the File Explorer in Windows, perform the <strong>Eject<\/strong> operation on the thumb drive. When the OS has ejected the volume, unplug it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Perform-the-Update-on-the-Yamaha-CP\">Perform the Update on the Yamaha CP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffcfd3\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: Do not power off the Yamaha CP or remove the thumb drive during the update process. If power is accidentally interrupted, the unit may become inoperable; if this happens, run the updater again. Consult the <strong>Read Me file<\/strong> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>With the Yamaha CP\u2019s power off, connect the updater thumb drive to the USB port on the back.<\/li><li>Hold down the <strong>Menu<\/strong> and <strong>Store<\/strong> buttons while you turn on the power switch. Wait until the Yamaha logo appears on the display. Don\u2019t press any other keys.<\/li><li>The display will indicate, \u201cNow loading.\u201d Press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> button to start the update.<\/li><li>The display will indicate, \u201cAll user memory will be initialized.\u201d Press <strong>Enter<\/strong> to continue.<\/li><li>Wait for the update to complete. This could take up to half an hour.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When the update is complete, the display will indicate, \u201cCurrent Ver:\u201d Check to make sure this is the new version number and not the previous one. This will confirm that the update was installed correctly. The display will indicate, \u201cCompleted. Please turn off.\u201d Shut down the power, and then turn it back on again.
