To register the M4 with Zoom, you\u2019ll need the serial number of the recorder, which is located on the back of the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Go to the Zoom <a href=\"https:\/\/zoomcorp.com\/en\/us\/registration\/\">product registration page<\/a>.<\/li><li>Fill out the required information, including the serial number, which is located on the back of your M4 MicTrak, and then click <strong>Submit<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Format-the-SD-Card\"><strong>Format the SD Card<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>IMPORTANT: <\/strong>Formatting SD cards will erase stored data, so back up any important files before formatting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start using your M4 MicTrak, you must format a <a href=\"https:\/\/zoomcorp.com\/media\/documents\/M4_compatible_cards_en.pdf\">compatible microSD card<\/a> directly on the unit to store your recordings correctly. Doing so can result in data loss.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Once powered on, press the <strong>MENU <\/strong>button. Use the <strong>UP <\/strong>and <strong>DOWN <\/strong>arrows to navigate to <em>SD Card<\/em>, then press <strong>ENTER<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Highlight <em>SD Format<\/em> and press <strong>ENTER<\/strong>. On the next screen, highlight <em>Execute<\/em>, then press the <strong>LO-CUT <\/strong>button to format the SD card.<\/li><li>You can also format the SD card by pressing the <strong>RECORD <\/strong>button while turning on the M4 MicTrak. A quick test will scan the SD card for usability. Simply connect them to the device, and you\u2019re ready to go! What\u2019s great is that the MicTrak has two separate A\/D converters and will automatically switch depending on the incoming audio, meaning you don\u2019t have to adjust input levels at all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Update-the-Inputs\">Update the Inputs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before recording, you will want to update the inputs to capture high-quality audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On the home screen, press <strong>1 <\/strong>and <strong>2 <\/strong>to switch between the built-in XY microphone and external inputs 1 and 2.<\/li><li>If you use the built-in XY mic, press the <strong>INPUT <\/strong>button to switch between <em>Off, Stereo, <\/em>and<em> Mono<\/em>.<\/li><li>If you use the external inputs, press the <strong>INPUT <\/strong>button to switch between <em>Mic, Mic lightning bolt icon, Line, <\/em>and <em>Line lightning bolt icon<\/em>.<ul><li>If the <em>Line lightning bolt icon <\/em>is selected, the input level will be reduced by 20dB.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/04\/select-input-type-on-a-Zoom-m4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"305\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/04\/select-input-type-on-a-Zoom-m4.jpg\" alt=\"Select input type on a Zoom m4\" class=\"wp-image-1777920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/04\/select-input-type-on-a-Zoom-m4.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/04\/select-input-type-on-a-Zoom-m4-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Select input type on a Zoom m4<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"Update-Phantom-Power-Voltage\">Update Phantom Power Voltage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>IMPORTANT: <\/strong>The selected phantom power voltage is sent to <em>both <\/em>inputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan on using gear that requires phantom power, you may need to update the amount of phantom power voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press the <strong>MENU <\/strong>button, navigate to and select <em>System<\/em>, then select <em>Power<\/em>.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Phantom Volt.<\/strong>, then select +24V or +48V.<\/li><li>If you are experiencing poor battery performance when phantom power is set to +48V, navigate to the phantom voltage settings and switch it to +24V.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Changing-the-Battery-Type\">Changing the Battery Type<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Except for rechargeable AAs, you can use any <em>matched <\/em>set of AA batteries. However, you must change the battery type settings beforehand to show the correct battery life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Verify the AA battery types match, then turn on the device.<\/li><li>Press the <strong>MENU <\/strong>button, navigate to and select <em>System<\/em>, then select <em>Power<\/em>.<\/li><li>Choose <em>Battery Type<\/em>, change it to the type of batteries inserted, then press the <strong>LO-CUT <\/strong>button.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Recording-Audio-with-the-Zoom-M4-MicTrak\">Recording Audio with the Zoom M4 MicTrak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>The M4 will always record with a bit depth of 32-bit float.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M4 MicTrak prides itself on using the 32-bit float format, and what\u2019s great is you can utilize it both directly on the unit itself and while recording on a computer! Once you\u2019ve updated your inputs, it\u2019s time to start recording.
