Then click on the <strong>Register a Product<\/strong> link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill out the product registration information, including the serial number on the underside of your SH-4d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you have registered, download and install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/global\/products\/sh-4d\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland driver software for your version of macOS or Windows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also handy to download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/global\/products\/sh-4d\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roland Quick Start<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/global\/products\/sh-4d\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Owner\u2019s Manual<\/a> as you will want to refer to them often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roland also provides the <a href=\"https:\/\/static.roland.com\/manuals\/sh-4d\/eng\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Owner\u2019s Manual in HTML format<\/a> online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Powering-the-SH-4d\">Powering the SH-4d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Standalone\">Standalone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For standalone use, you have two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Battery powered with 4 AA batteries<\/li><li>USB powered with a third-party 5V USB AC power adapter (not included) using the included USB-C to USB-A data cable<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Connected-to-your-computer\">Connected to your computer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also power the SH-4d by connecting it to your Mac or Windows PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect the included USB-C to USB-A cable to the USB-C port in the back of the SH-4d and connect the other end to your Mac or Windows PC or to a powered USB hub connected to the computer. If you are using your own cable, then make sure it\u2019s a USB-C data cable and not a charging cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you connect the USB cable to your computer, you can not only power the SH-4d but also transmit audio and MIDI to your DAW. To do this, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/global\/products\/sh-4d\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download and install the Roland driver software for your version of macOS or Windows<\/a>, as we explained above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Check-for-a-Firmware-Update\">Check for a Firmware Update<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Roland periodically releases new product firmware that provides bug fixes and additional features. Roland uses the term \u201c<strong>System Program<\/strong>\u201d to refer to firmware. Connect headphones with a 1\/4-inch TRS jack.<\/li><li><strong>Output R and L\/Mono<\/strong>. Connect 1\/4-inch TS cables to your speakers, mixer, or audio interface.<\/li><li><strong>Mix In<\/strong>. Connect a 1\/8-inch TRS cable from a stereo sound source. The audio will be passed through to the Phones and Output jacks.<\/li><li><strong>External Clock Signal Input<\/strong>. Sync the unit\u2019s sequencer to an external source by connecting a cable with a monaural, 1\/8-inch TS jack.<\/li><li><strong>MIDI In and Out<\/strong>. Connect5-pin DIN MIDI cables for external control.<\/li><li><strong>USB-C<\/strong>. Enables you to select one of the 11 <strong>oscillators<\/strong> (synthesizer models) and provides controls whose functions depend upon the oscillator chosen<\/li><li><strong>Filter\/Amp\/LFO Section<\/strong>. Provides real-time, dedicated controls for shaping the filter envelope, amplitude envelope, and low-frequency oscillator parameters for the oscillator<\/li><li><strong>Volume<\/strong>. This is the master volume control for line outputs and headphones<\/li><li><strong>Effects Section<\/strong>. Enables you to select and control effects parameters<\/li><li><strong>Sequencer Section<\/strong>. Controls for inputting notes into the sequencer and for selecting and recalling patterns<\/li><li><strong>Keyboard<\/strong>. The rows of buttons are laid out like a two-octave keyboard and can be used to play notes and chords. You also have <strong>Octave<\/strong> up and down buttons and <strong>Pitch<\/strong> buttons.<\/li><li><strong>Arpeggio and Hold<\/strong>. These buttons turn the arpeggio function on and off<\/li><li><strong>D-Motion Button<\/strong>. Turns on the unit\u2019s motion control, which enables sound modulation by picking up and tilting the whole unit, according to parameters you can program<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Connecting-an-External-Keyboard\">Connecting an External Keyboard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can program sequences and play the unit using the tiny buttons in the Keyboard section, you can also use the 5-pin <strong>MIDI In<\/strong> connection on the back to connect a conventional MIDI controller keyboard so that you can use full-size keys with velocity sensitivity, pitch bend and modulation wheels, foot pedals, and other controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After connecting a keyboard and turning on its power, you need to go to the <strong>System Settings<\/strong> section of the SH-4d\u2019s menu structure, under <strong>MIDI<\/strong>, and enable the <strong>Remote Kbd<\/strong> function.
