You want the VoiceLive Play unit to analyze the music from the audio inputs or through its built-in microphones (<strong>RoomSense<\/strong>) and create vocal harmonies that blend with the changing chords of the music. You also want to apply a wide array of signal-processing effects to your voice to enhance your sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started, all you need is a VoiceLive Play and headphones on the table in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Attach the power adapter to power up the unit.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Setup<\/strong> and navigate to the <strong>Input<\/strong> page.<\/li><li>In the RoomSense menu, choose <strong>Voice<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Back<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Plug in your headphones and put them on.<\/li><li>Sit close to the unit and sing. The built-in RoomSense microphones will pick up your voice.<\/li><li>While singing, press <strong>Mix<\/strong> and adjust the <strong>Headphone Level<\/strong> until it\u2019s as loud as you like.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Back.<\/strong><\/li><li>Use the <strong>Control knob<\/strong> to navigate presets as you sing. They are named after classic rock songs you may or may not recognize. Don\u2019t bore us; get to the chorus. Press the <strong>Hit<\/strong> footswitch to engage the vocal harmony effect.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Play-Acoustic\">Play Acoustic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You bought a Play Acoustic because you are a singing guitarist or a guitarist working with a singer, and you want to have the Play Acoustic unit analyze your guitar chords and create vocal harmonies to go along with your singing. You also want to apply effects to both your guitar and your voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need a guitar to get started and hear the vocal effects. All you need is the Play Acoustic on the table in front of you, a microphone and a cable, and headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Connect your microphone with the cable. Plug in your headphones and put them on.<\/li><li>Attach the power adapter to power up the unit.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Setup<\/strong> and navigate to the <strong>Input<\/strong> page. Choose your type of microphone, either <strong>Dynamic<\/strong> or <strong>Condenser<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Back<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Sing into the microphone and adjust the <strong>Mic Gain knob<\/strong> on the left side until your voice makes the front panel LED on the left light up green.<\/li><li>While singing, press <strong>Mix<\/strong> and adjust the <strong>Headphone Level<\/strong> until it\u2019s as loud as you like.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Back.<\/strong><\/li><li>Use the <strong>Control knob<\/strong> to navigate through presets. Because it\u2019s hard to sing and play guitar while you are holding a heavy pedal over your head and peering up at the small print, we\u2019ve reproduced the chart here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Looping Mode:<\/strong> Press and hold the <strong>Up<\/strong> and <strong>Down<\/strong> arrows. Press <strong>Down<\/strong> to rec\/loop\/overdub. Press <strong>Up<\/strong> to stop. Hold to erase. Press <strong>Hit<\/strong> to exit.<\/li><li><strong>Tap Delay Mode:<\/strong> Press and hold <strong>Up + Hit<\/strong>. Tap <strong>Hit<\/strong> to set the tempo. To set the tempo, manually press <strong>Up<\/strong> or <strong>Down<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Set Mic Gain:<\/strong> While singing, turn up the <strong>Mic Knob<\/strong> until you see green LED lights. If the LED turns yellow, that\u2019s ok. You will need to configure the settings on the unit depending on what kind of microphone you are using.<\/li><li><strong>Aux<\/strong>: Connect a 1\/8-inch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/insync\/tip-ring-sleeve-trs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TRS <\/a>stereo cable to provide analog audio input from a phone, a tablet, or another audio device. This enables sending a stereo track into the unit for effects processing (including the <strong>Vocal Cancel<\/strong> function, which attempts to remove the vocal from a recording), as well as passing the signal through to the USB audio output for recording in a DAW.<\/li><li><strong>Pedal<\/strong>: You have the option of connecting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/Switch3--tc-helicon-tc-electronic-switch-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TC Helicon Switch 3<\/a> three-button footswitch, sold separately, to which you can assign real-time control functions, such as <strong>looping<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Outputs<\/strong>: Connect a stereo pair of left and right XLR cables to send your unit\u2019s signal to speakers or a mixer and PA system.<\/li><li><strong>Headphones<\/strong>: Connect headphones to the 1\/8-inch TRS jack.<\/li><li><strong>USB<\/strong>: Attach the included USB cable to the USB mini-B jack to connect to a Mac or a Windows PC. If you don\u2019t hear any vocal input, check the setting on this knob.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair of <strong>Outputs<\/strong> can be configured in different modes that you select from the <strong>Setup<\/strong> menu:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li><strong>Stereo:<\/strong> Outputs a stereo mix of all voices and other inputs.<\/li><li><strong>Mono:<\/strong> A monaural mix of all effected signals, including vocal harmonies, is sent out the <strong>Left<\/strong> channel. The \u201cdry\u201d vocal, which, if used, includes tone and pitch correction, is output on the <strong>Right<\/strong> channel.<\/li><li><strong>Dual Mono:<\/strong> A monaural effected voice signal, including harmonies, is sent out the <strong>Left<\/strong> channel. The <strong>Aux<\/strong> signal is output on the <strong>Right<\/strong> channel. If you experience hum in the signal, try pressing the switch to reduce or remove the hum.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On this Play Acoustic, the pair of Outputs can be configured in these modes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li><strong>Vocal\/Guitar (DI):<\/strong> The monaural effected vocal signal and the signal from the Aux input, if used, are output on the left channel, and the monaural effected guitar signal is output on the right channel.<\/li><li><strong>Stereo:<\/strong> The effected vocal and guitar, together with the Aux input, if used, are mixed into a stereo output.<\/li><li><strong>Mono: <\/strong>The effected Vocal and Guitar signals are output through the left channel, and the dry vocals are output through the right channel.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Configuring-the-Microphone-Input\">Configuring the Microphone Input<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To set your unit up with your microphone, go to the <strong>Setup<\/strong> <strong>menu<\/strong> and indicate the type. There are four relevant options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Dynamic Mic<\/li><li>Condenser Mic (selecting this will provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/insync\/phantom-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">phantom power<\/a>)<\/li><li>MP-75 Mic<\/li><li>USB<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>You can connect almost any make or model of dynamic or condenser microphone to the VoiceLive Play or the Play Acoustic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/MP85Mic--tc-helicon-mp-85-natural-response-vocal-microphone-with-mic-control\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/03\/tc-helicon-mp-85-mic-control-557x1024.jpg\" alt=\"TC Helicon MP-85 microphone\" class=\"wp-image-1777409\" width=\"183\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/03\/tc-helicon-mp-85-mic-control-557x1024.jpg 557w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/03\/tc-helicon-mp-85-mic-control-163x300.jpg 163w, https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2023\/03\/tc-helicon-mp-85-mic-control.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The TC Helicon MP-85 microphone has a Mic Control button for remotely triggering functions on the VoiceLive Play or Play Acoustic<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the third option, the owner\u2019s manuals and the onboard settings on the units refer to the TC Helicon <strong>MP-75<\/strong>, a dynamic microphone with a proprietary <strong>Mic Control button<\/strong> that can be used to remotely turn effects on or off on the VoiceLive Play or Play Acoustic. The MP-75 is discontinued; the new model is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/MP85Mic--tc-helicon-mp-85-natural-response-vocal-microphone-with-mic-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TC Helicon MP-85<\/a>. You can connect an MP-85 and set the unit to the MP-75 setting and get the same result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, the MP-85\u2019s Mic Control button triggers the <strong>Hit<\/strong> function on the unit, but you can assign it to a different function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the fourth option, <strong>USB<\/strong>, you can send a mono vocal track from your computer\u2019s DAW into the unit for audio processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Read-the-Full-Manual\">Read the Full Manual<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The VoiceLive Play and Play Acoustic units are easy to use at the top level, but there is much more under the hood than you might think. It\u2019s time to get under that hood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good folks at TC Helicon emphasize that for these products, you really do need to read the owner\u2019s manuals from start to finish, or you may miss important information.
