It goes without saying that a turntable dust cover is the best line of defense, but we recommend regularly giving it a good clean. Even the smallest bits of dirt, debris, or grime on the stylus or spindle can affect the turntable\u2019s sound quality and sometimes even its pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a list of a few things you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><li>20 weight oil (lubricant) with PTFE <em>(Teflon)<\/em>. 3-in-ONE motor oil or sewing machine oil should do the trick.<ul><li><strong>Make sure it\u2019s detergent-free<\/strong>, as oil detergents can cause long-term damage.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/CCS2000--caig-laboratories-ccs-2000-caig-dustall-compressed-air-10-oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Compressed air<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/BristleBrush--ortofon-bristle-brush-stylus-brush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stylus brush<\/a><ul><li>Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (DIY)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/RecordBrush--ortofon-record-brush-anti-static-record-brush-with-sheath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Record brush<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/MN890--musicnomad-6-n-1-vinyl-record-cleaning-and-care-kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinyl Record Cleaning and Care Kit<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Clean the stylus using the stylus brush, then use the microfiber cloth to pick up any dirt or grime left behind. Cleaning the stylus not only helps with the pitch issues, but also helps prevent damage to the record!<ul><li><strong>Always<\/strong> brush the stylus going back to front. Brushing it front to back or side to side can bend or break the stylus or cantilever.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>If you don\u2019t have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/BristleBrush--ortofon-bristle-brush-stylus-brush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stylus brush<\/a>, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Regular cleaning allows you to get between 500 and 1000 hours, depending on your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s time to replace the stylus or cartridge when there\u2019s general sound degradation like fuzziness, distortion, and loss of high-end frequencies. A bad stylus will also often jump or skip, which will cause damage to your record, so if this happens, it\u2019s time to replace it ASAP!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should have a small flathead screwdriver if you have a cartridge with a removable stylus. If the cartridge has a built-in stylus, you\u2019ll also want a small set of needle tweezers. Small, curved needle-nose pliers will do the trick if you don\u2019t have tweezers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Replace-a-turntable-stylus\">Replace a turntable stylus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To remove a stylus, grip the cartridge and carefully pry the stylus off using the small flathead screwdriver. Once removed, carefully grab the stylus from its sides and attach it to the cartridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Replace-a-turntable-cartridge\">Replace a turntable cartridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT! <\/strong>Don\u2019t yank out the wires, as you may damage the wiring or leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your stylus is bad and the stylus is built into the cartridge, you\u2019ll need to replace the entire cartridge. The cartridge is attached to the headshell by four color-coded leads that correlate to each channel\u2019s positive and negative terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>There is a universal color code for turntable cartridge leads. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/service.shure.com\/s\/article\/color-code-for-phono-cartridge-wiring?language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shure\u2019s cartridge guide<\/a> for more information!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Remove the cartridge from the headshell and set the screws aside.<\/li><li>Grasp the <em>base <\/em>of the lead wires using the tweezers and gently remove them.<\/li><li>Attach the lead wires to the replacement cartridge, then reinstall the screws. You\u2019ll get some audibly bad sound quality if either is misaligned. If it\u2019s misaligned too much, there will be poor sound quality and potential damage to the stylus or record. Aligning the cartridge and balancing the tonearm takes time and patience, but it\u2019s ultimately worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"How-to-align-the-cartridge\">How to align the cartridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the stylus and cartridge are replaced and attached to the headshell, you\u2019ll first need to perfectly align the cartridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Attach a cartridge alignment protractor, like the one that is a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/CartMountSet--reloop-turntable-cartridge-mount-and-gauge-set\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reloop Turntable Cartridge and Mount Set<\/a>, to the turntable\u2019s spindle.<ul><li>If you don\u2019t have one on hand, you can also find printable versions online. If you print one out, ensure it\u2019s set to the correct resolution.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Grab the tonearm and carefully lay it so the stylus rests on the center of point <strong>B<\/strong>, then use the markings until the edge of the cartridge is aligned perfectly with the protractor.<\/li><li>Taking care that the cartridge doesn\u2019t move, turn the platter and move the tonearm so the stylus rests on the center of point <strong>A<\/strong>. Simply put, the tracking force is the cartridge\u2019s weight on the record. An unbalanced tonearm will result in audio quality and overall performance like a misaligned cartridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Place the turntable on a <em>completely level<\/em> surface and adjust the feet accordingly. For the most accurate results, we highly recommend using a level tool you can find at any hardware store.<\/li><li>Remove the stylus cover, making sure it doesn\u2019t bump into anything, and free the tonearm from the rest.<\/li><li>Set Anti-Skating to 0, then slowly twist the counterweight until the tonearm is perfectly parallel to the turntable.<\/li><li>Once parallel, hold the counterweight and set the stylus pressure (inner dial) to 0.<\/li><li>Turn the counterweight so the stylus pressure gauge reads the same as the traction force of your stylus. For example, if your stylus has a traction force of 3, ensure the pressure gauge reads 3.<ul><li>The traction force can vary between manufacturers, so check the cartridge tracking force specifications on the manufacturer\u2019s product page.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Set the Anti-Skating to the same number as the stylus pressure.
