Connect your XLR cables to your microphones using the combi jacks.

The Conference and Event models are not set up to accept condenser microphones, which require phantom power. The Venue model can provide phantom power to condenser microphones on channels 1 through 4.

You can also connect line-level devices to the combi jacks using 1/4-inch TS cables.

Line-level Input Channels

The Passport Event has one channel, and the Venue has two channels, with only a 1/4-inch input. This is for either a Line-level signal from an active device or a Hi-Z (high impedance) signal directly from a passive instrument such as an electric guitar or its pedalboard. If you have those devices, plug them in now.

Stereo Input Channel

In each model of Passport, the right-most channel is a stereo pair which enables you to choose between three kinds of stereo input. The inputs are:

Bluetooth: a wireless stereo audio connection from your phone, computer, or other Bluetooth device.

L/Mono and Right Input: a pair of 1/4-inch jacks for connecting a pair of monaural cables from a stereo output instrument such as certain keyboards or guitar pedals. Using the L/Mono jack by itself results in a mono channel heard from both speakers.

Stereo Input: a 1/8-inch TRS stereo jack for accepting input from a stereo source such as a phone’s headphone output or other line-level stereo audio source.

The Venue model has a second stereo pair channel with the same two wired input options but without Bluetooth.

Fender Passport Mixer Outputs

Aside from the powered connections to the included left and right speakers and the headphone outputs, the Event and Venue models have additional output features.

Mono Out

Optionally, connect a cable with a 1/4-inch TS plug to a powered monitor speaker.

Sub Out

Optionally, connect a cable with a 1/4-inch TS plug to a powered subwoofer. Set the subwoofer’s crossover frequency to 120Hz. When a cable is connected to the Sub Out, the Passport amplifier and speakers will no longer output bass frequencies.

Getting Everything Connected to the Mixer

While the mixer’s power switch is turned off, ensure the speakers are connected.

IMPORTANT: Don’t turn on the mixer without first connecting the speakers.

On the mixer, make sure all volume knobs have been turned all the way down and all cable connections have been plugged in before you turn the power switch on. This will prevent loud transient sounds or “pops” that can damage the equipment, not to mention hurt the ears of anyone listening. Here’s a checklist:

Make sure the Master Volume knob, the Volume on each channel, and the Level knob for the Phones Out connection are all turned counterclockwise, all the way down.

Connect all cables for the microphones, instruments, inputs, and the Mono Out and Sub Out, if used.

Turn on any powered devices that send signals to the mixer, such as a keyboard instrument, wireless receivers, or a device playing audio to the Stereo Input jack. If you are using a powered subwoofer, turn its power on first.

Powering Up the Mixer and Setting Levels

Once every source is connected and powered on, turn on the power switch on the back of the mixer. The Power light on the bottom of the mixer panel will glow green.

Selecting Input Sources and Setting Levels

For channels where you have connected either a microphone-level signal or a line-level signal, press the Mic / Line button to select the correct source. The button will glow white if Line is selected.

On the Venue model, if you are using condenser microphones, engage the Phantom Power button above the four combi jacks.

For the line input channels on the Event or Venue models, use the Line / Hi-Z button to select whether the input is for a line-level device or a high-impedance guitar input. The button will glow white to indicate that a preamplifier has been engaged for high-impedance input.

Turn up the Master Volume level a little.

While at the mixer, get someone to help you by going around to each microphone and speaking or singing into it. Check the microphone input one channel at a time and gradually turn up that channel’s Volume knob. The channel light above it will glow green if a signal is coming in. Turn it up until the light stays green or flickers to yellow. If the light turns red, the input signal is too loud, resulting in distortion. Turn the volume down a bit if you see red.

On each channel, you can modify the tone of the sound using the Tone knob on the Conference model. When the knob is in the center detent position, the mixer does not modify the signal’s sound. When you turn the knob counterclockwise, the bass frequencies are accentuated. When you turn the knob clockwise, the treble frequencies are accentuated.

The Event and Venue models have separate Treble and Bass control knobs that let you independently adjust the treble and the bass frequencies.

The Venue model has a master Tone control next to the Master Volume knob, affecting the overall tone of the output signal.

Master Volume and Signal Level Meters

The Conference model has a glowing Signal/Clip LED below its Master Volume knob. It will glow green when a signal is present, turn yellow when the sound level is moderate, and glow red when the signal is distorting and the amplifier is in danger of overloading and shutting down. If this occurs, turn down the Master Volume and re-adjust the levels for each input channel individually.

The Event and Venue models have a pair of stereo Signal Level Meters to show the amplifier output signal level in more detail. Again, red indicates overload. Back off the Master Volume and readjust input levels.

Reverberation

The Event model provides a Reverb knob on each channel to add a different amount of digital reverberation to each input. There is no effect when it is fully counterclockwise; turn it up to add reverb.

The Venue model has a Reverb knob for each channel, but you can also modify the reverberation effect using the controls in the upper-right corner of the mixer. Use the Select button to choose between two reverb types; adjust the Time and Tone knobs to create the desired effect.

TIP: Before or after a music presentation, if you want someone to use a microphone to speak to the audience, you will want to turn the reverb off for that microphone channel while the person is speaking.

Pairing Bluetooth

If you want to play back music or prerecorded material in stereo from your phone, computer, or device, you can connect it to the Passport using Bluetooth.

On the channel with the Pair Bluetooth button, ensure the Volume is turned all the way down.

Press the Bluetooth button. When it is flashing blue, go to your device’s Bluetooth settings. The name of the device (“Passport Conference,” “Passport Event,” or “Passport Venue”) will be visible. Select it.

When pairing is complete, the Bluetooth button on the Passport will glow solid blue.

Turn up the volume on your device to its highest level.

Start music playback on your device.

Gradually turn up the Volume knob on the mixer’s channel.

To disconnect the Bluetooth connection at the mixer, press and hold the Bluetooth button.

When the Bluetooth connection is enabled, the input jacks for cables on that channel will be disconnected.

Avoiding Feedback

As we discuss in our How to Set Up a PA System article, feedback is the very unpleasant howling sound that results when a microphone picks up its own signal from the speakers. If you encounter feedback, one or more of your microphones is pointed toward a speaker or toward each other.

You can minimize the chance of feedback by placing the speakers at the front of the stage area, facing the audience, while the microphones are positioned behind the speakers.

If you encounter feedback, turn the volume for each channel down. Then turn each one up and identify which channel’s microphone is feeding back. Then reposition that microphone until the feedback stops.

It’s a good idea to test all this before your event begins and before the audience is present. You may also need to educate your presenters or musicians not to move their microphones to a position that causes feedback.

Packing It Up

When you are finished using your PA, turn the power switch off. It’s always good to zero out the mixer: turn all the volume knobs all the way off (fully counterclockwise), return all tone knobs to the center detent position, and turn all the Reverb knobs (if present) all the way off as well. Disconnect all cables. Store the speaker cables and the power cable in the compartments in the back of the mixer and reattach the speakers to the mixer section. Your system is ready to store or to carry to your next gig.

[142726
444694,444695

267516,267517,267518,426012,393894,430012

<meta name="description" content="Here's how to set up and use your Fender Passport Portable PA System to address an audience.
