Setting it up is also easy, so you can start making music sooner. With just a few cable connections and menu setting changes, you will create music in no time. Follow the sections below for connection instruction tips and tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Audio\"><strong>Audio<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT: <\/strong>Make sure you have the volume turned down and make your connections before turning on the MPC Key 61. \u2018Hot plugging\u2019 can result in loud pops that may cause damage to your speakers or headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MPC Key 61 is an all-in-one workstation, so you don\u2019t need to be at a computer to record audio. It has two XLR combo jacks that accept instrument, line, and mic-level signals. It also has independent gain knobs, so you can get the perfect mix without needing to adjust anything within the workstation\u2019s settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Use the <strong>INST-LINE <\/strong>switch to change the level signal depending on what\u2019s connected.<\/li><li>If you are connecting a condenser microphone, plug it in <strong>before <\/strong>turning on +48V and turn it off <strong>before <\/strong>disconnecting it.<\/li><li>Phantom power is sent to both inputs when engaged.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/what-phantom-power-need\/\" class=\"relatedcontent_link\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-related-content\"><div class=\"relatedcontent_block\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2019\/04\/Phantom-Power-hero.png);background-size:cover;background-position:center\"><div class=\"relatedcontent_overlay_content\"><\/div><div class=\"relatedcontent-text relatedcontent_content\"><p class=\"relatedcontent_title\" style=\"color:#fff\">What is Phantom Power and why do I need it?<\/p><p class=\"relatedcontent_subhead\" style=\"color:#fff;border:none\"><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"External-hardware\"><strong>External hardware<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have external hardware like a synth, a drum machine, or a sampler, you can use the 5-pin MIDI, \u215b-inch CV, and even the USB-A jacks for total control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>To adjust global MIDI settings, press <strong>MENU<\/strong>, select <strong>PREFERENCES<\/strong>, then choose <strong>MIDI\/SYNC<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>How to connect external keyboards<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to trigger a different sound on the MPC Key 61 with an external MIDI keyboard or controller, you must go into the track settings and update the MIDI port number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press <strong>MAIN <\/strong>to enter your project.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Track<\/strong> and use the data wheel to change the track number.<\/li><li>On the left side of the display, touch the <strong>Track <\/strong>menu (three horizontal bars).<\/li><li>Select Track 1, press the data wheel, then select MIDI Port 1.<\/li><li>Select Track 2, press the data wheel, then select a different MIDI port number. This will then allow you to trigger multiple sounds on multiple devices.<ol><li>Depending on what is connected, you will need to access its settings and change the MIDI port to match that of the MIDI port you selected on the MPC Key 61. Please refer to the manufacturer\u2019s User Manual for more information.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MPC Key 61 Hardware Overview | Akai Professional\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wnrZdr6ewzE?wmode=transparent&amp;rel=0&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>MPC Key 61 Hardware Overview | Akai Professional<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"How-to-Create-a-Song\">How to Create a Song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can break down a song you create on the MPC into four components: <em>Project<\/em>, <em>Sequence<\/em>, <em>Track<\/em>, and <em>Program<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Project: <\/strong>As the name implies, the Project is the actual song.<\/li><li><strong>Sequence: <\/strong>A Sequence is a section of a song (chorus, verse, etc.) that contains all your MIDI and audio tracks.<\/li><li><strong>Track: <\/strong>Like with any other DAW, anything you record is a track.<\/li><li><strong>Program<\/strong>: Not to be confused with tracks, Programs are your sound source. With the MPC, a program can be a sampled instrument, a drum kit, or a plug-in.<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Project-setup\"><strong>Project setup<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you turn on the MPC Key 61, you will be greeted by the <em>Project<\/em> screen. You can load demos, open recently saved projects, or create something new. This guide will show you how to create a basic project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>On the <em>Project <\/em>screen, press <strong>Empty Project <\/strong>located at the bottom of the display.<\/li><li>Press the <strong>MAIN <\/strong>button. This will take you to the Sequence window. Akai has made it easy to quickly build a song, so you have more time to record and need less time to stop and start every time you want to add new tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press the <strong>RECORD <\/strong>button. You will receive a four-beat count-in.<\/li><li>Once you\u2019ve reached the end of the bars you selected, it will automatically switch to Overdub mode.<ol><li>You will see a white bar showing you the progress of the track\u2019s length.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Use the encoder knob to switch to the next track and start performing. On the Akai MPC Key 61, you can save anything associated with that project: drum programs, program effects, samples, sequences, and even an audio mixdown! You can save it directly to the workstation or to external storage devices (like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/search?s=usb+thumb+drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USB thumb drive<\/a>). Either way, the process remains the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Press <strong>MENU<\/strong>, then press <strong>SAVE<\/strong> on the touchscreen.<\/li><li>Select what you want to save, rename it, then select the location where you wish to save it.<\/li><li>If you want to save it to an external device, press the <strong>Eject <\/strong>icon to safely eject the thumb drive <em>before <\/em>disconnecting it.
