Never store a cello or other stringed instrument in an attic, a basement, a garage, or a shed outside. One season of storage in extreme heat and humidity, or extreme cold and dryness, can ruin your cello.

Cellos are delicate musical instruments crafted from thin-carved pieces of resonant wood glued together and holding up under the tension of the strings. You may wish to put your cello on a stand during breaks in practice, but you should protect your cello and bow by putting them back in the case and closing the lid when you are done playing. Always loosen the bow hair before storing your bow in the case.

A hardshell cello case with wheels.

Since cellos are fragile, you may want to invest in a better-quality hardshell cello case. These ordinary small changes are one reason that the cello needs to be retuned often.

However, in prolonged exposure to cold temperatures or low humidity, the cello’s wood may crack and split. The neck and the soundboard, or top, can shift, changing the distance from the strings to the fingerboard (which we call the “action”), making the cello harder to play. If it’s too hot and humid, the wood can expand, the glue holding the back, sides, and top together can work loose, and the cello can begin to fall apart. The fingerboard can also come unglued from the neck. Repairing these problems is expensive.

Protect your cello from temperature and humidity extremes

A simple rule is to always keep your cello in the same rooms in the house where you keep yourself and your family. You need heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer, and so does your cello.

When you transport your cello, don’t ever leave it in a car. In the summer, the interior of a parked car can get so hot that the cello can come unglued.

If you transport a cello in cold weather, your cello will be cold when you carry it into a warm house. When you get inside, it is a good idea to leave the cello in its case for half an hour or more so that it can slowly warm up before you take it out of the case, tune it, and play it.

Never store a cello in an attic, a basement, a garage, or a shed. One season in extreme heat or cold, or humidity or dryness, can ruin your cello.

Maintain consistent humidity

You may not be aware of how widely the humidity inside your home changes throughout the year. Now that you own a cello, you need to get a hygrometer (humidity meter). It displays relative humidity as a percentage. Check the reading frequently.

A hygrometer, or humidity meter, that fits inside your cello case.

A cello, like any stringed instrument, should be kept in humidity between 40% and 55%. Outside that range, your instrument may suffer damage, particularly in low humidity. In deserts and in northern climes during the cold months, the humidity will drop well below 40% indoors. During those months you need to use a humidifier with your cello.

A simple humidifier is a holder for a sponge that you moisten with water every few days. The water evaporates slowly and keeps the cello humid. Humidifiers only work when they are placed inside the cello or next to the cello, inside the cello’s case, with the lid closed. Whenever you are not playing your cello, return it to its case with the humidifier. If you go several days without playing the cello, you need to open the case, read the humidity level on your hygrometer, and add water to the humidifier as needed.

Inserting the dampit humidifier.

The dampit humidifier is a tube that you moisten with water and insert into the body of your cello through the bottom of an f-hole. However, it’s practically inevitable that your cello’s wood will crack or seams will come unglued someday. Don’t despair: a professional stringed instrument luthier can repair these problems.

How to Clean Your Cello

Start by washing your hands before you play. Our fingers are covered in dirt, oils, and sweat, but our cellos don’t have to be.

Remove rosin dust every time you finish playing

When you play your cello with your bow, rosin dust rubs off the bow hair and gets deposited on the instrument and the strings. Replace all four strings if the windings begin to fray at the nut or the bridge, if the strings become discolored, or, most importantly, if they have lost their tone and don’t sound good anymore.

Choose the right strings for your cello

Keep a replacement set of cello strings in your case. Sets of strings come in different gauges for a full 4/4-size cello and for the various smaller sizes of student cello, so it’s important that you buy a set that is correct for your cello’s size. There are many varieties of strings, for students and professionals, with different formulations for producing different kinds of tone quality. Ask your teacher to help you choose the right set.

If one string breaks and you replace it out of your set, you can also buy an individual string later on.

How to change your strings

IMPORTANT: Ask your teacher first. Don’t change a string on your own until your teacher has taught you how to use the tuning pegs.

IMPORTANT: Only change one string at a time, keeping the other three strings tuned up. If you were to release the tension on all four strings, your sound post could fall (see below), requiring professional repair.

Lay a towel or mat on a table and lay your cello on it face-up.

Release the tension on the tuning peg of the string you are changing. When the string is slack, lift its ball end free of the point at which it is anchored in the fine tuner on the tailpiece. At the other end, above the nut, in the pegbox, the end of the string with cloth windings will be threaded through a hole in the tuning peg. When a strand of hair breaks, don’t yank it out. Keep a pair of nail clippers in your case and use them to clip off the strand near the frog and near the tip, taking care not to clip off intact strands in the process.

Eventually your bow’s hair will wear out. When this happens, you will need to take your bow to a stringed instrument repair professional for re-hairing. It’s not something you can do yourself.

Your Cello Sound Post

On the inside of your cello’s body, just below the bridge, is a cylindrical piece of wood called the sound post. You can see it if you look through the treble-side f-hole. The sound post connects the soundboard and the back of the instrument to transfer the vibrations from the strings throughout the body.

You normally don’t need to think about the sound post, but under certain circumstances, such as a rapid change in temperature and humidity, the sound post may fall out of position. You will notice this because the sound of your cello will become weaker, not to mention that there will be a piece of wood rattling around loose inside.

If your sound post falls, take your cello to a professional luthier. This is not something that a player or a teacher can repair, as it requires special tools and training.

Annual Maintenance

Sweetwater recommends that you take your cello and bow to a professional luthier every year for maintenance, even if you don’t notice anything wrong. A professional can check to make sure everything’s okay, in addition to giving your cello a setup, which means adjusting the parts of your instrument for optimum playability.

Remember to ask your teacher or school orchestra director for help caring for your cello and keeping it in tip-top condition. Have fun learning this fascinating instrument.

Cello Quickstart Guide

[2,142726

328699

202712

<meta name="description" content="In this guide, we will show you how to take care of and get years of enjoyment from your new cello.
