Register the Eventide H90<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Go to eventideaudio.com<\/a>, click Log In<\/strong>, and if you need to, click Create Account<\/strong>. After you log in, register your unit\u2019s serial number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From your account page, download the H90 Control<\/strong> app for Windows or macOS. We\u2019ll discuss its use at the end of this guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Setup and Connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Power up the H90 by plugging in the 12V power supply provided with the unit. There is no on\/off switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventide H90 back panel connections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The back panel provides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Four input jacks and four output jacks that accept standard mono (unbalanced) \u00bc” plugs. The inputs and outputs can be configured for Instrument Level<\/a> (such as a guitar) or Line Level<\/a>. The eight LEDs on the back will light up to indicate which inputs and outputs are set for Line Level.<\/li>
- Two EXP\/CTL<\/strong> jacks for connecting expression pedals<\/a> or aux footswitches with TRS connectors<\/li>
- One USB-C port for connecting to a Windows PC or Mac to use the Eventide H90 Control<\/strong> app and send and receive MIDI controls<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The side panel provides 5-pin DIN connectors for MIDI controllers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventide H90 inputs, outputs, and routing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The four audio inputs and four outputs provide extensive configuration options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Insert Routing<\/strong> is enabled by default. We will use this to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under System<\/strong> settings, you can also set up Dual Routing<\/strong>, setting up the H90 as two independent mono or stereo effects processors. Different jacks can be configured for inputs, sends, or returns depending on the mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can set up two independent stereo signal paths, and you can even set up the H90 to process guitar and vocals on separate channels if you hook up a preamp for the vocal mic<\/a>. For guitar, you can also set up Dual Routing<\/strong> for the four-cable method<\/a> or pre\/post in an amp effects loop<\/a>. Consult the Eventide H90 User Manual<\/a> for all the input\/output routing options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Connecting the H90 to a guitar rig<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
To get started, let\u2019s keep things simple. Connect a guitar directly to Input 1<\/strong> and connect Output 1<\/strong> to an amp. If you want to hear the effects in stereo, hook up Output 2<\/strong> to a second amp; the H90 will automatically set the effects to stereo mode. Now we can navigate the front panel and begin to work with the sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each Program<\/strong> on the H90 consists of two Presets<\/strong> labeled A<\/strong> and B<\/strong>. Programs<\/strong> can be saved into Playlists<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To choose a Program<\/strong>, turn the Select <\/strong>knob to scroll through the active Playlist<\/strong>. Press the knob to activate that Program<\/strong>. You can also page through the Programs<\/strong> by using the A<\/strong> and B<\/strong> footswitches and tapping the Active<\/strong> footswitch to activate the Program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Filtering programs by category<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
You can zero in on the type of effect you want by pressing the Program<\/strong> button again and using the categories above the three Quick Knobs<\/strong>. The display will show List<\/strong>, Type<\/strong>, and Algorithm<\/strong>. Use these to narrow down your choices. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Turn the first knob under List<\/strong> to select Lead<\/strong> sounds.<\/li>
- Under Type<\/strong>, select Modulation<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Then turn the knob under Algorithm<\/strong>, and from the 62 effects algorithms in the unit, you will see the list of those that pertain to Lead<\/strong> and Modulation<\/strong> sounds.<\/li>
- Turn the Select<\/strong> knob, and you will only be shown the shorter list of effects in those categories.<\/li>
- Press the Select<\/strong> knob again to activate the Program<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Using Quick Knobs to adjust parameters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The three Quick Knobs<\/strong> give you access to the three parameters most helpful to adjust in a live setting, depending on which Program<\/strong> you selected. (Each Program<\/strong> has many more parameters you can access through deeper editing.) You\u2019ll see three settings labeled A<\/strong>. Turn each knob to adjust these parameters on the A Effect<\/strong>. Tap one of the Quick Knobs<\/strong> again to toggle to the three settings for the B Effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Change the Effects in a Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
You can choose a different Effect<\/strong> to be a part of your Program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Press the Presets<\/strong> button.<\/li>
- Toggle between A<\/strong> and B<\/strong> and turn the Select<\/strong> knob to find another Effect<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Tap Program<\/strong> again to activate it.<\/li>
- Press the LED buttons above the A<\/strong> and B<\/strong> footswitches to engage or bypass the A<\/strong> Effect<\/strong> and the B<\/strong> Effect<\/strong> independently.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Once you have selected an Effect<\/strong>, you can customize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Press the Parameters<\/strong> button.<\/li>
- Scroll through each page of three parameters using the Select<\/strong> knob.<\/li>
- Adjust each parameter with the Quick Knobs<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Hot Knob<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
In this mode, the display shows HK<\/strong> next to the Perform<\/strong> knob. This is the Hot Knob<\/strong> function. You can assign one parameter in the Program<\/strong> as the Hot Knob<\/strong> to quickly adjust it with the Perform<\/strong> knob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Setting Tempo for time-based effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Press the Presets<\/strong> and Parameters<\/strong> buttons together to enter Tempo<\/strong> mode. Set the Tempo<\/strong> in beats per minute (bpm) using the left Quick Knob<\/strong>. With the middle Quick Knob<\/strong>, you can set the clock source to Program<\/strong> or Global<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you select one of these, the P Active<\/strong> button flashes, and you can set a tap tempo<\/strong> with the P footswitch<\/strong>. You can also set Source<\/strong> to MIDI Clock<\/strong> for external control over USB or MIDI cables, which bypasses the internal tempo settings. Press the Perform<\/strong> knob again to exit this mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hot Switches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Tap the Perform <\/strong>knob again. The display will show Hot Switch<\/strong> assignments for the three footswitches on board. You can assign Program<\/strong> parameters to the footswitches. You can also assign Hot Switch<\/strong> parameters to external aux footswitch controllers with deeper editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bank mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Press and hold the Select <\/strong>knob to enter Bank<\/strong> mode. This enables you to navigate the Playlist<\/strong> in Banks<\/strong> of three programs simultaneously. Pressing a footswitch activates a Program<\/strong>. Pressing the footswitch again bypasses it. Move between the Banks<\/strong> by pressing and holding the A footswitch <\/strong>(down) or the B footswitch<\/strong> (up).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Routing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Press the Routing button<\/strong> to go into Routing<\/strong> mode<\/strong>. You can set the two Effects<\/strong> in a Program<\/strong> in Series<\/strong> or Parallel<\/strong> modes. As an advanced capability, if you are using either of two Inserts<\/strong>, you can position each Insert<\/strong> in different positions in the signal chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By turning the Select<\/strong> knob, you will go to the second page, where you can set Send Level, Return Level,<\/strong> and Mix<\/strong> percentage for the Inserts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By turning the Select <\/strong>knob again, you will go to the third page, where you can set three parameters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Tails<\/strong>, on or off. This determines whether an Effect<\/strong> or Program<\/strong> continues to ring out when you disable an Insert<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Latency<\/strong> and Polarity<\/strong> are used to correct phasing issues if you have configured the H90 with an external effects loop and are sending an output to external hardware and back again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
There are even more routing options if you use Dual Routing<\/strong> rather than Insert Routing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
System settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Press the Programs<\/strong> and Routing <\/strong>buttons together to go into System<\/strong> settings. There are five areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Global<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Under Global<\/strong>, you can designate which of four User Playlists<\/strong> is the master Playlist<\/strong> that you are working with. Under
