At its core, an impulse response is a digital copy of acoustic characteristics, such as a room’s reverberation, a guitar cab, mics, and mic positions.

To understand the basics of an impulse response, let’s try an experiment. Go into a closet and snap your fingers. Next, move to a larger room, like your kitchen, and snap your fingers again. You’ll hear the difference in the room characteristics. In simple terms, the finger snap is the impulse, the “dry signal.” The room’s reverb and tonality are the response, the “processed signal.”

Difference between amp sims and impulse responses

What’s the difference between amp sims (simulations) and impulse responses? This is a question that is often asked, especially if you’re new to the world of IRs. In simple terms, think of an impulse response as a picture and a guitar amp sim as a video.

Guitar amp sims, like AmpliTube, do what they say: they simulate or mimic a guitar rig’s entire signal chain, including effects, guitar heads, and cab types. You have complete control of everything, like the amount of distortion on a pedal or EQ on a guitar head.

Impulse responses, on the other hand, are snapshots, meaning they’re linear and only capture the cab, mic, and room characteristics. If you want effects, you’ll need to use external hardware or software to work with the processed output signal. So, if you’re going to use a delay effect, you’ll need a physical delay pedal or a delay plug-in.

A great thing about the IR is that you can get a more accurate tone, and if you’re recording, you also save computer processing power, as amp sim plug-ins can start bogging down your computer’s resources, especially if you’re using them on multiple tracks. Depending on your setup, you may choose one over the other, but in the end, both are great options to suit your needs.

How Much Difference Does the Impulse Response ACTUALLY Make?

How do impulse responses work?

As we mentioned earlier, impulse responses are digital copies of a room’s acoustic qualities. In the world of guitars, IRs are perfect for those who record and want a professional sound or live performers who want to get the same tone from their setup that they had in the studio. While there is a bit of science and math behind the scenes, the way they work is straightforward.

Once the IR is created, it is loaded into a DAW or guitar processor to “mimic” said cab. For example, you could find or create an IR of a Vox AC30 mic’d with a Royer R-121 inside a medium-sized room. Once captured, you can begin using that IR to get the same tone in the future.

Creating guitar cab impulse responses

Now that you know what impulse responses are and how they work, let’s talk about creating them. While there are plenty of free IRs online, you may want to create one of your specific setups but with different characteristics, such as a different mic, preamp, guitar head, or different mic placement. Before you make an IR, you’ll need a few things on hand.

Microphone

Guitar head or preamp

Guitar cabinet

Audio interface, preferably with two or more inputs, if you plan on using multiple microphones

Deconvolution plug-in (if you’re using a sine sweep to create the IR)

PC: Voxengo Deconvolver

Mac: MLsTool. If you own Logic Pro, you can use the Space Designer plug-in

DAW (if you’re recording)

If you’re a Studio One user, you can use its native impulse response plug-in called IR Maker.

IR loader plug-in or a floorboard processor

Hardware connections

TIP: For the most accurate result, be sure you have good-quality cables and clean power when creating the IR.

Before we capture the impulse response, the first thing to do is adjust the mic placement in the room, so you find the sweet spot beforehand.

Connect the interface to your computer, then the microphone to one of the inputs.

If your mic requires phantom power, be sure to connect the mic before turning the phantom power on.

With your standard guitar amp setup (guitar > head > cabinet), mic up the cab and start recording. You’ll get a good idea of the final sound by doing so.

Connect one output from your audio interface to the FX RETURN of your guitar head and disconnect your guitar.

Software setup

CREATE A CUSTOM FOLDER! We recommend creating a custom folder to export your final IRs for easy access in the future.

Once everything is set up, it’s time to capture the IR! There are a few ways you can do this. The first method is using a sine sweep that has a frequency range from 20hZ to 20kHz and is at least 30 seconds long at a sample rate of at least 48kHz. Alternatively, you can use a white noise burst. No matter which method you use, the final result of the IR will sound like a click. While it may not sound like much, it’s important because all frequencies are played back at once.

Sine wave

IMPORTANT: Turn your monitors off and take off your headphones while recording the sine wave because it will get pretty loud!

Launch your DAW and create a new project.

Create two mono audio tracks and load the sine wave onto one of them. To make things simple, we have included a sine sweep for you to download!

The file is 30 seconds in length and sweeps from 20Hz to 20kHz at 96kHz sample rate.

Import the sine wave onto one track and disable its input. This is because this track will only be used for playing back the sine wave signal through your rig.

Record arm the second audio track, then press Record when the sine wave starts.

Stop recording a second or two after the sine wave ends so the end doesn’t get truncated, then save it as a .WAV file.

Load the recorded sine wave sweep into the deconvolution plug-in, and let it process the sine wave. Each plug-in is different, so be sure to check out the plug-in’s owner’s manual to learn how to process the sine wave.

After it has been processed, a new .WAV file is created.

Click the three dots to download the 30 second 96kHz sine sweep

Click the three dots to download the 60 second 96kHz sine sweep

White noise burst

The white noise burst method is straightforward and is a lot less time-consuming, as it completely cuts deconvolution out of the process. Many DAWs have built-in white noise generators, but if yours doesn’t, then search for a high-quality white noise .WAV file online to load into your DAW.

Load the white noise into a DAW project, then create two mono audio tracks.

Import the white noise onto one track and disable this input. This is one of the most critical steps because this ensures you won’t risk volume loss on your final signal.

Save the normalized track as a .WAV file.

How to use impulse responses

Now that you have created the IR, you can use it!
