Check the String’s Pitch

Use a clip-on, handheld, or pedal to check each string’s pitch.

The standard tuning for electric bass guitar from low to high is E, A, D, G

5-string basses have an extra low string tuned to B

6-string basses have an extra low string tuned to B plus an extra high string tuned to C

Important! – Use a tuner app or invest in a quality guitar tuner

Listening and staying in tune are two critical elements of making music. If your bass guitar is out of tune, it will sound like each other instrument is out of tune, too. That’s challenging to sing with and even more difficult to listen to. Use a free tuner app or get started with a clip-on tuner to keep your bass guitar in tune and keep making music.

2. Tighten if Flat, Loosen if Sharp

If the string is flat, tighten the tuning peg to raise the pitch.

If the string is sharp, loosen the tuning peg to lower the pitch.

Important! – Tuning peg position and string tension

Always tighten a string after loosening it to maintain its tension and tuning peg position. So, if you’re sharp, lower the pitch slightly below pitch, then tune up until at pitch.

3. Tune Each String and Adjust

Tune each string, repeating until all strings maintain their intended pitch.

Other strings may change and adjust as you continue tuning.

Important! – Tuning with 5th-fret and 7th-fret Harmonics

For a standard tuned bass guitar (E, A, D, G), the 7th fret harmonic’s pitch of a string sounds identical to its lower neighbor’s 5th fret harmonic, and visa-versa. For example, the low E string’s 5th fret harmonic and the A string’s 7th fret harmonic produce the same pitch. When in tune these harmonics will sound in unison and not waver, while out-of-tune will sound wobbly and not identical.

Important! – Higher Frets “Out-of-Tune” and Adjusting Intonation

If your open strings are tuned, but certain notes sound out of tune, your bass guitar may need intonation. That means the length of each string needs to be changed by adjusting the bridge adjusters. Doing so will either shorten or lengthen the string and adjust the sound pitch at each respective fret.

Changing the strings on your bass? A bass guitar (like all stringed instruments) should be tuned every time it’s played. Whether practice or performing, musical instruments require tuning to produce their notes at the correct sounding pitches.

Can you tune bass guitar by ear?

Bass guitar can be tuned by ear, but we recommend using a tuning tool. Whether recording or playing in an ensemble, music requires in-tune instruments, or all the differences in tuning create a noticeably disharmonic or “out-of-tune” result. Free app tuners, affordable clip-on tuners, and quality professional tuners are available at all price levels.

What is the difference between Sharp and Flats?

Sharps and Flats aremusic notation markings used to communicate which note(s) an instrument plays (e.g., B♭, C♯). They are also used while tuning to describe whether a string is too high or too low. Sharps (♯) mean the note is higher in relation, and flats (♭) mean the note is lower in relation. In practice, that means if a string is too low in pitch, it is flat and needs to be raised to its intended pitch. If a string is too high in pitch, is it sharp and needs to be lowered to the intended pitch.

Can you tune bass with a guitar tuner?

Most guitar tuners will work with a bass guitar. Some tuners, especially clip-on tuners, may perform better based on where and how well they’re connected to the headstock. Strings vibrate and resonate from the headstock to the tuner, and some tuners will perform more consistently with the bass guitar’s low frequencies. Using your phone’s microphone and a tuner app may not be as accurate or consistent as a clip-on, handheld, or pedal tuner.

Is bass guitar tuned the same as electric and acoustic guitar?

All guitars are tuned in a similar method, but tuner orientation and choice of tuning may vary. While tuned at A440 standard tuning, the 4-string bass guitar (E, A, D, G) sounds one octave below the relative strings on a 6-string electric or acoustic guitar. Electric and acoustic guitars have two additional high strings, tuned E, A, D, G, B, E.

What is standard tuning for 4-, 5-, and 6-string bass guitars?

5-string and 6-string bass guitars are like 4-string bass guitars but with extra strings. While a 4-string bass has 4 strings tuned E, A, D, G (low to high), a 5-string bass has an additional low string and is tuned B, E, A, D, G. 6-string basses have both an additional low string and high string, tuned B, E, A, D, G, C.

4-string bass standard tuning: E, A, D, G

5-string bass standard tuning: B, E, A, D, G

6-string bass standard tuning: B, E, A, D, G, C

4 String Bass Guitar Tuning

5 String Bass Guitar Tuning

6 String Bass Guitar Tuning

Shop Tuners for Bass Guitar

Whether you’ve got an assortment of guitar tuners or have already found your favorite one, it always pays to have one around (they’re so useful!).
