In this guide, we will show you how to\nregister, set up, and work with a Korg Volca Sample 2 for the first\ntime. Using a generic power supply may damage the unit. <\/li><li> The Volca Sample 2 has two different battery modes: nickel-hybrid and alkaline. So, depending on the batteries you use, you may need to change the mode. This is because the alkaline and nickel-hybrid batteries discharge at different rates, and the unit needs to know so it can compensate correctly. <ul><li> To change battery modes, press and hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button while powering on the unit, then press <strong>M2 <\/strong>to switch between nickel-hybrid (bt.nH) and alkaline (bt.AL).   <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li> The Volca Sample 2 <em>cannot<\/em> be powered via USB. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Register-the-Volca-Sample-2\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Register the Volca Sample 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before\nwe dive into using the Volca Sample 2, the first thing to do is to\nregister it with Korg. If you register the device within the first 90\ndays of purchase, Korg will extend your warranty for an extra year,\nand you will also receive free bundled software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Go to the Korg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.korgusa.com\/productregistration\/korg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">product registration page<\/a> and create or log in to your Korg account. <\/li><li>On your account page, click <strong>Register a Product<\/strong>, fill out the required information, then click <strong>Save<\/strong>. <ul><li>Keep your Sweetwater invoice handy, as you\u2019ll need to enter the purchase date. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Register-the-software-bundle\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Register the software bundle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you purchase a Korg synth product, you\u2019ll receive licenses for virtual instruments, effects plug-ins, Reason Studios\u2019 Reason Lite DAW, and free keyboard lessons. All you need to do is go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.korg-license-center.com\/index.php?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Korg License Center page<\/a>, enter the bundle code number on the card included in the box, and click <strong>Submit<\/strong>. Korg has even released free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.korg.com\/us\/products\/dj\/volca_sample2\/bonus_packs.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">bonus content<\/a> for you to try out, too! You can import samples via your mobile device or on your computer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Mobile-device\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Mobile device<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to import samples is through your mobile device. If you\u2019re an iOS user, then you can transfer samples via Korg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/audiopocket-for-volca-sample\/id927415821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">AudioPocket<\/a> app. Android users will need to use the third-party <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.singlecellsoftware.kvsampler&amp;hl=en_US&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Caustic Editor<\/a> app. But no matter the platform, the process will be the same. The easiest way to transfer is by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.korg.com\/us\/support\/download\/product\/0\/867\/#software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Volca Sample Librarian<\/a>, as it\u2019s a drag-and-drop process. However, Korg also supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.korg.com\/us\/products\/dj\/volca_sample\/thirdpartyapps.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">third-party librarian software<\/a> such as the popular vosyr sample manager, Caustic Editor, and Volca-X. When you take your\nVolca Sample 2 out of the box, pattern banks 13\u201316 are empty, but\nyou can overwrite the factory patterns if you wish. All you need to\ndo is select a memory slot, select the sample you want, then either\nlive or step record. Let\u2019s create a pattern from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press and hold the <strong>MEMORY <\/strong>button and press <strong>M13<\/strong>, which is the first empty pattern slot. <\/li><li>Use the flashing tempo knob to change the tempo. <\/li><li>Press <strong>M1<\/strong>\u2013<strong>M10<\/strong> to select a sample and use the black Sample knob to change it. <\/li><li>Press the <strong>REC <\/strong>button to record arm the track, then press <strong>PLAY <\/strong>to begin recording.  <ul><li>Hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button while pressing the <strong>REC <\/strong>button to enter <strong>STEP REC <\/strong>mode. This will allow you to record a sample one step at a time. Step recording is useful when you need to be exact on straight-eighth or sixteenth-note patterns. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Press the <strong>REC <\/strong>button to disarm the track. <\/li><li>Once you\u2019re happy with your pattern, hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button, press the <strong>MEMORY <\/strong>button, and select the memory slot where you want to save your pattern. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Automating-samples\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Automating samples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One\ncool feature of the Volca Sample 2 is automating sample parameters\nusing the Motion Sequence feature. While you can fine-tune the sound\nof your sample (e.g., pitch, attack, decay, etc.) globally, there may\nbe a time when you just want the pitch of the snare drum to drop for\none specific hit to give it a little extra color. Follow these steps\nto learn how to automate sample parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Select the sample you want to automate, press and hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button, then press the <strong>M12 (MOTION SEQ ON\/OFF) <\/strong>pad. <\/li><li>Record arm the track, press <strong>PLAY<\/strong>,and move the parameter knobs you wish to change.  <ul><li>Once the pattern has played through once, the function is automatically deactivated. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button and press <strong>M13 (MOTION SQ CLEAR) <\/strong>to erase the automation.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Editing-patterns\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Editing patterns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nmay be a time when you aren\u2019t entirely happy with how the pattern\nturned out. It\u2019s easy to edit everything without having to start\nfrom scratch. You can edit individual steps, clear entire parts, or\nclear a whole pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Edit individual steps:<\/strong> While in <strong>LIVE <\/strong>mode, select the sample you want to edit, then press the <strong>STEP MODE<\/strong> button. Once you\u2019re in step mode, press a step key to toggle the step on or off. <\/li><li><strong>Clear entire parts:<\/strong> While in <strong>LIVE <\/strong>mode, select the sample you want to clear, press and hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button, then press the <strong>M15 (CLEAR PART) <\/strong>key. <\/li><li><strong>Clear whole patterns:<\/strong> While in <strong>LIVE <\/strong>mode, press and hold the <strong>FUNC <\/strong>button, then press the <strong>M16 (CLEAR ALL) <\/strong>pad. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"Chaining-multiple-patterns-together\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft underline customh4 swheader\">Chaining multiple patterns together<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\ncan chain multiple patterns together to make one extended sequence.\nAll you need to do is press and hold the <strong>MEMORY\n<\/strong>button,\nalong with the first and last pattern banks, to select the range.
