Register the modwave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Before\nwe dive into using the modwave, the first thing to do is register the\nsynth with Korg. If you register the device within the first 90 days\nof purchase, Korg will extend your warranty for an extra year, and\nyou will also receive free bundled software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Go to the Korg product registration page<\/a> and create or log in to your Korg account. <\/li>
- Click Register a Product<\/strong>, fill out the required information on your account page, then click Save<\/strong>.
- Keep your Sweetwater invoice handy as you\u2019ll need to enter the purchase date. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Register the software bundle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
When you purchase the Korg modwave, you\u2019ll gain access to a large sound bundle, including virtual instruments, DAWs, effects plug-ins, and more! All you need to do is go to the Korg License Center page<\/a>, enter the bundle code number on the card included in the box, and click Submit<\/strong>. Once complete, you\u2019ll receive licenses and activation instructions for each piece of software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>Setup and connections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Before\nyou start playing, you\u2019ll first need to get everything set up and\nconnected. It\u2019s straightforward, but here are a few things to take\nnote of when connecting your gear to the modwave:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- \nAlways\n\tconnect your speakers (or headphones) before\n\t<\/em>turning\n\tthe unit on<\/strong>.\n\t<\/li>
- \nAlways\n\tturn off the modwave before\n\t<\/em>turning\n\tthe unit off<\/strong>.\n\t<\/li>
- \nWhen\n\tconnecting the modwave to your computer, be sure to connect it\n\tdirectly to your computer. This is particularly important when\n\tupdating your firmware. While you can plug it into a USB hub, there\n\tmay be connectivity issues.\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Modwave terminology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Before\nwe show you how to create a Performance (patch), you want to learn\nthe terminology to know how each piece fits the puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Voice: <\/strong>The voice is the heart of a performance. This includes the oscillators, pitch, LFOs, ADSR, filter, amp, and the mod matrix (Kaoss Physics, mod knobs, mod processors). Learn more about voice assignments here<\/a>. <\/li>
- Programs:<\/strong> Programs \u201chouse\u201d the voices and include the Pre FX and voice assignment. Learn more about program setup<\/a>. <\/li>
- Layers:<\/strong> The Layers contain each program, the arpeggiator, and other settings like the MIDI key and channel, velocity zones, and volume. Check out the manual to learn more about how to set up Layers<\/a>.
- You can have up to two Layers per Performance and can edit one Layer at a time. <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Performance:<\/strong> The Performance is the final patch. Only one Performance can be played at a time but can have two Layers. Check out page 13 of the manual<\/a> to learn how to set up Performances. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Lanes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Lanes\nallow you to assign different parameters at different lengths\nindividually. You can create seven types of Lanes: Timing, Sample,\nPitch, Master, Shape, Gate, and Step Sequencing. Each Lane will\ncontrol a specific parameter on each step of the Layer, and each bank\ncan have up to 64 steps (16 steps in four banks) in each Lane. To put\nit in simple terms, think of Lanes as individual tracks in your\nrecording software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here\u2019s\nhow each type of Lane works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Timing:<\/strong> Adjusts each step\u2019s speed, length, and crossfade controls. Use this in conjunction with the Sample Lane to create smooth crossfades and unique rhythmic patterns. <\/li>
- Sample:<\/strong> This changes the sample of the selected Layer. If you want to change the sound of a single step, hold the ENTER <\/strong>button and press the step you want to change. <\/li>
- Pitch:<\/strong> In its simplest form, you can change the pitch, semitone, and transposition of individual steps. It\u2019s different from the arpeggiator in that it is note-based and starts at every step, rather than notes that are time-synced. <\/li>
- Shape:<\/strong> The Shape lets you change the shape of the waveform of the currently selected step. It can also affect the Pitch and Step Sequencing lanes if it\u2019s turned on in those lanes. <\/li>
- Gate:<\/strong> The Gate will adjust how long the note is held for each step. <\/li>
- Step Seq:<\/strong> This lane works hand in hand with modulation. You can adjust the value of a particular type of modulation on a per-step basis. <\/li>
- Master:<\/strong> Restarts all of the lanes mentioned above after a specified time\/beat. To turn it on, hold SHIFT <\/strong>and press the MASTER <\/strong>button. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

How to create a Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Now\nthat you\u2019ve learned the building blocks of a modwave Performance,\nlet\u2019s create one from scratch. With the number of options and\ncontrols you have available, the possibilities are endless! When\nyou\u2019re on the home screen, you will see the Performance that is\ncurrently loaded, the Layers that the Performance is composed of,\nwhat the Mod knobs are set to, and the Koass Physics display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Press the Enter <\/strong>(home)button and use the Value <\/strong>knob to scroll through sounds. In this case, you will want to select Init Performance<\/strong>. <\/li>
- Press the Wave Select<\/strong> button in the OSC 1 section, then press the Osc\/Mode <\/strong>button to select A, A\/B, or Sample.
- A<\/strong> = one wavetable, A\/B<\/strong> = 2 wavetables, Sample <\/strong>= Multisample <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Use the Value <\/strong>knob to select the wavetable you wish to have. Follow the same procedure if you want to use OSC 2. <\/li>
- Go through and edit any other parameters you\u2019d like. <\/li>
- If you want to add a second layer, double-tap the B <\/strong>button in the Layers section (next to the Volume knob) to select it, then follow the steps outlined above. <\/li>
- Once complete, press the Write <\/strong>button, update the Performance\u2019s name, press Write <\/strong>to overwrite the current Performance, or press SHIFT <\/strong>+ Write <\/strong>to save it as a new user preset. <\/li>
- Press Enter <\/strong>to confirm. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Kaoss Physics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
What\nsets the modwave apart from other synths is the built-in Kaoss\nPhysics engine controlled by the touchpad. Think of it as a bouncy\nball rolling around the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\ncan hold your finger on the pad while moving it for fine control, or\nyou can flick it and watch the \u201cball\u201d bounce across the display,\nlike a pinball machine. You can also \u201claunch\u201d it automatically\nwhen using a custom trigger source. What\u2019s more, you can edit the\nbehavior of the four \u201cwalls\u201d (edges of the display). You can\ncustomize the speed at which the ball will bounce, and you can even\nremove them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To\nenable the Kaoss Physics, press the SHIFT\n<\/strong>+\nKaoss <\/strong>buttons\nand turn Physics on. When Physics is turned off, the pad will act\nlike a standard X-Y pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
