Improper care or maintenance can lead to things like corrosion, slides, valves that stick, and grime that can shorten the life of your trumpet. Not only that, but not taking care of your trumpet increases the chance that you might have to pay for a costly repair if it stops working. Follow these instructions to make your trumpet sound and look great for years!

Daily care

Empty water

Wipe it down

Other daily maintenance tips

Weekly care

Clean the leadpipe and mouthpiece

Grease the tuning slides

Oil the valves

Monthly care

Deep clean the valves

Give the trumpet a bath

Daily care

You should do three important things every day when you play the trumpet. They are simple, and they can make a world of difference. Each day you play, you will want to oil the valves, empty any water that has built up while playing, and wipe off your trumpet. Sweetwater’s Trumpet Care Kit has everything you need to care for and maintain your trumpet!

Empty water

Condensation starts to build as you play. Not emptying the water results in a gurgling sound, which isn’t the most pleasant sound in the world. And while trumpets are pretty resistant, leaving moisture inside for an extended period can increase the chance of corrosion.

Open the main water key and gently blow through your trumpet to clear any water out. If you blow too hard, you can push the water past the water key, and it will stay inside your trumpet! Next, press down all three valves, open the third valve water key, and gently blow through your trumpet. Take the slides out and remove any excess moisture. Be sure to hold down the corresponding valve when removing the slide. If you hear a pop, you forgot to press the valve first.

Wipe it down

This is pretty self-explanatory. Before you put your horn back in its case, wipe it down with a microfiber cloth like the one in Sweetwater’s Trumpet Care Kit. Doing this will keep the finish in good condition and make your trumpet look brand-new.

NOTE: Silver-plated trumpets will naturally darken over time, even if wiped off daily. This doesn’t affect the playability of the horn, but if you want to preserve the finish, use silver polish, a silver cloth, or a valve guard.

Other daily maintenance tips

When inserting your mouthpiece, do so gently. If you insert it too hard, the mouthpiece can get stuck. If you run into that unfortunate situation, take your instrument to an ensemble teacher or an instrument repair shop for removal. Don’t use household tools!

Handle your trumpet with care; bumping into hard objects can cause dents. Not only does it not look good, but if it gets dented in a critical area, it will need to go to a repair shop.

For example, if you dent the end of the leadpipe where you insert your mouthpiece, you may not be able to insert the mouthpiece. No mouthpiece, no music.

Do not store items not designed to go in the case, such as music and books. They can cause damage to the instrument. We know it’s convenient, but the extra pressure on the valves and slides from a method book pressing down on them can cause bending. It won’t happen all at once; it will happen slowly over time, and one day, your trumpet won’t work anymore.

Weekly care

You should perform some in-depth care of your horn once a week. Some things include greasing the slides, thoroughly cleaning the valves, and cleaning the inside of your mouthpiece and trumpet. Be sure to use the correct grease/oil on the correct part.

Clean the leadpipe and mouthpiece

Cleaning the inside of your mouthpiece and the leadpipe is critical because the grime can really affect your tone and may cause harm to the rest of your horn in the long run.

Place the mouthpiece in some warm, soapy water and use a mouthpiece brush to clean the inside.

For the leadpipe, remove the Trumpet’s main tuning slide and dip a trumpet cleaning snake in warm, soapy water. Then, run the snake brush through the leadpipe a few times to remove any buildup. Run warm water through the leadpipe to wash any remaining gunk, and then let it air dry before reinserting the main tuning slide.

Grease the tuning slides

Greasing your tuning slides is vital because grease allows slides to move freely. When grease dries out, it can cause slides to almost “freeze” in place and become immobile. We’ll walk you through how to remove old, dry grease and apply new grease below.

Remove the tuning slides, then wipe them down (with a damp microfiber cloth) to remove any old grease. This is especially important if you’re trying a different brand, as the grease compounds and viscosity can vary between companies.

Place a small amount of grease on your finger (about the size of a dime) and rub it around the tips of the slides.

While holding down the corresponding valve, move the slide in and out so the grease is distributed evenly across the entire slide.

Oil the valves

While there are different schools of thought about how often you should oil trumpet valves, we recommend oiling them once a week before you play. By doing this, you’ll get peace of mind knowing that your valves won’t stick during an important concert or audition!

During your weekly valve lubrication, you only need to add a tiny bit and work it through by pressing the valve a few times.

IMPORTANT: The valves have numbers stamped on them. Valve 1 is the valve closest to the mouthpiece, valve 2 is in the middle, and valve 3 is the farthest. Make sure the numbers are facing you when holding the trumpet in playing position! The holes on the valves line up with their respective slides, so take note when removing all three valves at once to oil. Placing valves in the wrong valve casing will restrict stop air from passing through the instrument.

Remove the valve cap, pull the piston out a bit, then put just a few drops of oil on the bottom half (gray part) of the valve piston.

Move the valve up and down. This will ensure that the oil is distributed evenly around the entire valve.

You may feel the valve grind or stick slightly if you haven’t oiled your valves in a while. If this happens, remove the valve and add more oil.

Insert the valve fully and slowly rotate it until you hear a click. This indicates that the valve guide is set in place.

Tighten the valve cap and press the valve a couple more times to make sure it’s not sticking.

NOTE: When you switch oil brands, fully clean your valves first, as the oils may have different compounds. Wash the valves, wipe them down with a microfiber cloth, and allow them to dry fully before applying the new oil brand.

Only oil the gray part of the valve!

Monthly care

You should give your trumpet a deep clean once a month. You’ll need to disassemble it to give it a bath and to dry parts off, so have some clean, soft, lint-free cloths on hand! We recommend placing the pieces in a container so you don’t lose any of them during the cleaning process and then lay them out on a clean, dry towel after you clean them.

Deep clean the valves

Now is an excellent time to give your valves a good cleaning. Ensure you’re only cleaning the bottom half (gray part) of the piston, as you may risk breaking the plastic valve guide or damaging the valve spring.

Stand the valve piston up in soapy water, ensuring that only the bottom half of the piston is submerged.

Use a valve brush (or a toothbrush) and gently scrub the bottom half of the piston and its ports.

Rinse it off with water, then wipe it dry with a microfiber cloth to remove any leftover oil, dirt, or grime.

Run warm water into each valve casing and use a valve casing brush to clean them out rinsing warm water after that.

If the valve caps look dirty, then clean those, as well.

Give the trumpet a bath

Giving your trumpet a bath is important, as you’ll be removing all of the grime that has built up throughout the month. You’ll need to fill a tub with lukewarm water (not hot) and dish soap. You must also have valve casing, mouthpiece brushes, and a cleaning snake on hand.

Remove the mouthpiece, valve pistons, valve caps, and tuning slides and set them aside.

Fill the tub with lukewarm water and dish soap, and submerge your horn. Let it sit for a few minutes so the debris starts to loosen.

Run the cleaning snake through the leadpipe and the bell to scrub the inside of the horn.

Use the cleaning snake to scrub the main and third key tuning slides.

Scrub the valve casing inside using a valve casing brush and use a mouthpiece brush to scrub the inside of the second key’s tuning slide port.

Thoroughly rinse the inside of the horn and tuning slides with lukewarm water to remove any excess grime and leftover soap until the water runs clear.

Set it aside and let it air dry.

Once dry, oil the valves, grease the tuning slides, then reassemble the trumpet.

[142726
352426,54927
328684

202712

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v17.9 -
