Just a few minutes of your time each day will help your sax play and look like new for years to come. To make it easy, Sweetwater has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/SSASCK--superslick-alto-saxophone-care-kit\">alto saxophone care kit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/SSTSCK--superslick-tenor-saxophone-care-kit\">tenor saxophone care kit<\/a>, which will cover all your needs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Remove-moisture\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Remove moisture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like with other woodwind instruments, removing\nmoisture is probably the most important thing you can do when caring for and\nmaintaining your sax. By doing so, the pads on your keys will last longer, your\ncase won\u2019t stink, and you\u2019ll also be preventing any chance for mold and mildew to\nform, especially on the reed. This is critical because inhaling mold and mildew\ncan be very hazardous to your health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Remove the reed from the mouthpiece, run it through lukewarm water to rinse it off, then wipe it dry. Once wiped dry, place it in a <strong>reed guard<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use a soft, clean cloth to wipe the mouthpiece dry, then use a <strong>mouthpiece swab<\/strong> to remove the moisture built up during your session.<\/li><li>Run a neck swab, like the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/RIASNeck--daddario-rnsasx01-rico-neck-saver-alto-saxophone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D\u2019Addario Neck Saver<\/a>, through the sax\u2019s neck to remove any moisture.<\/li><li>Tip the sax upside down to let the water run out of the bell. Next, use a <strong>sax body swab<\/strong> to dry it out completely. While not completely necessary, you can run the swab through again for peace of mind.<\/li><li>Place the weighted part in the bell, tip the sax upside down, then grab it from the other end and pull the cloth through.<\/li><li>Lastly, use <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/YAC1113P--yamaha-yac-1113p-woodwind-pad-cleaning-paper-70-pack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cleaning paper<\/a> to soak up any moisture from the pads and tone hole key. Using a <strong>pad saver<\/strong> will also help draw out moisture.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Wipe-it-down\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Wipe it down<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you put your saxophone back in its\ncase, you should wipe it down with a clean, soft cloth to remove any oil\nresidue and fingerprints. This will extend the life of your sax\u2019s finish! Just\nwipe the body and keys down with the cloth, and you\u2019re all set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f3f2f1\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>Keep a cosmetic (makeup) brush in your case! This is excellent\nfor getting dust off quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Other-daily-care-and-maintenance-tips\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Other daily care and maintenance tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While removing the moisture and wiping the sax\ndown are important, here are a few other tips that are just as important!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Keep at least two reeds in rotation. You\u2019ll go through them a lot less often!<\/li><li>Use two hands when taking the saxophone out and placing it back in its case.<\/li><li>Brush your teeth before you play, especially if you\u2019ve eaten anything sugary. It may sound silly, but when sugar mixes with your saliva, the moisture that collects on the pads becomes sticky.<\/li><li>Clear out any gunk that has collected at the octave key tone hole with tone hole cleaner. If you don\u2019t have any cleaner available, then you can use a cotton swab.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Always keep one hand on the sax. The strap is just an aid in supporting the instrument when you\u2019re playing. If it fails while you\u2019re playing, it will lead to a pretty big dent and a costly repair.<\/li><li>Never store the mouthpiece on the neck!<\/li><li>While the swabs will do most of the work, there may be some leftover moisture, so don\u2019t close the case immediately after you\u2019ve placed it back in. Instead, keep it open for a little while to let it air dry.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Saxophone : Assembly, Care and Maintenance\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u1uyQKCl9sw?wmode=transparent&amp;rel=0&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Saxophone: Assembly, Care and Maintenance <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Weekly-care\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Weekly care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a week, you should take a little extra time\nafter playing to do a deeper cleaning of your saxophone and its parts. Along\nwith your daily cleaning routine, you should do a few additional things: clean\nthe mouthpiece, use cork grease (if necessary), and wipe everything down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Clean-the-mouthpiece\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Clean the mouthpiece<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep cleaning your mouthpiece every week is\nessential. Calcium begins to form, which affects the sound, and bacteria can\nhang around, which is not good. It may take you a little bit of time, but it\u2019s\nworth it in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Soak your mouthpiece in soap and room temperature or cold water for about 20 minutes.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Scrub it with a <strong>mouthpiece brush<\/strong>, then wipe it dry. If you don\u2019t have a mouthpiece brush handy, then you can also use a toothbrush.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t brush too hard, especially around the baffle, side rails, and tip.<\/li><li>If there\u2019s leftover buildup, stuff a cotton ball into the chamber, douse the cotton ball in <strong><em>white<\/em> vinegar<\/strong> or lemon juice (other kinds of vinegar can stain mouthpieces), and let it soak for an hour or two. Once done, rinse it under room temperature or cold water and then dry it off.<\/li><li>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/SterisolSpry--sterisol-1885-germicide-premixed-8-oz-spray-bottle\">germicide<\/a> explicitly made for wind instruments to sanitize the mouthpiece.<\/li><li>If you\u2019re in a pinch, you can use alcohol or an alcohol-based mouthwash. Don\u2019t soak the mouthpiece! You\u2019re just sanitizing it, so a quick dip will suffice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Other-weekly-care-and-maintenance-tips\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Other weekly care and maintenance tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While deep cleaning and sanitizing your\nmouthpieces are important, there are a few other things you should do to make\nsure your saxophone is in top condition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Apply a little cork grease around the cork <em>only<\/em> when you\u2019re starting to have some difficulty getting it off or when it\u2019s dry. Applying too much grease too often can result in the cork coming off.<\/li><li>Wipe down the tenons thoroughly (the parts where the saxophone connects) and remove any buildup that has formed. We recommend not using any grease, which can cause unnecessary buildup and make it harder to take apart in the future.<\/li><li>Roll up a polishing cloth and <em>carefully<\/em> clean the keys; too much pressure can bend the keys.<ul><li>Use a tone hole cleaner to get into the tight spaces. But once a quarter (every three months or so),\nyou should do a few other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Oiling your saxophone keys is important to ensuring your sax functions smoothly, but it&#8217;s best left to the professionals. Take your saxophone to your local instrument repair shop and they&#8217;ll be able to help you out.<\/li><li>Inspect the key pads.
