Until Windows 11 was announced, TPM was something not many people had heard of. It’s an added layer of protection so potential malware cannot access any credentials, encryption keys, and other very sensitive user data stored in your system. Think of the TPM as the fingerprint or facial recognition system on your smartphone. Without the correct biometrics, you can’t access any information. You could also compare it to an iLok license or eLicenser. Without the USB key or activation number, there’s no way to access your software.

The TPM system comes in a few different forms:
a physical chip that you can install on a specific motherboard header, a module
that is already soldered to the motherboard, or one that is firmware-based that
you can enable within your BIOS without needing to mess around with any
hardware.

Most pre-built computers sold within the past
five years or so should already have some sort of TPM installed, and more often
than not, it’s already enabled. However, if your PC is older or if it’s a
custom-built machine, then it may not be available to you. So, if you’re a
Windows 10 user and want to utilize the BitLocker data encryption feature, you
must enable the TPM. For Windows 11, you won’t even be able to install it
unless the TPM is enabled.

TPM Module

What are fTPM and PTT?

Some Intel and AMD processors have “soft” TPM
systems, known as fTPM or PTT. These TPM systems are integrated into the
processor’s firmware. There is a difference between the two, however. Intel’s
built-in TPM system is known as PTT, and AMD’s is known as fTPM.

What’s unique about this technology is that your
motherboard may have a TPM chip header as well as a fTPM/PTT feature. This
means that you can run either the “hardware” or “software” versions and get the
same results. Unlike TPM, which is more often than not a
physical component installed on your motherboard, Secure Boot is built into the
UEFI firmware.

As the name suggests, your computer will only boot trusted (secured) software/firmware components digitally signed from the motherboard’s manufacturer (you may see the term OEM being used). When Secure Boot is disabled, your computer will not boot if an untrusted firmware component is present.

How to enable TPM and Secure Boot

Enabling TPM and Secure Boot are a relatively
simple processes, but you need to know what to look for. Before changing any
settings, have your motherboard manufacturer’s owner’s manual handy so you can refer
to both navigation and also to the terms and language as they differ from
system to system.

IMPORTANT! Before you begin:

Please follow the motherboard manufacturer’s driver and firmware update installation instructions to the letter; otherwise, you may brick (completely disable) your PC.

Only download motherboard or BIOS firmware and drivers directly from the manufacturer. The downloads you find on third-party websites can cause system-wide issues, may have bloatware, and may even have malware.

You must perform all of the following operations within the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). If you don’t feel comfortable navigating through it, then please take it to a qualified professional. Changing the wrong settings can result in PC instability.

You must convert from BIOS (Legacy) to UEFI mode to enable Secure Boot. Check out Microsoft’s video below for details on how to convert from BIOS to UEFI.

Enable TPM

If you don’t have TPM, or if it’s currently
disabled, you will receive an error stating that a compatible TPM cannot be
found. If this is the case, there will be some additional legwork necessary.
Since the UI and navigation of each processor and motherboard are a bit
different, you will need to pull up the motherboard manufacturer’s UEFI BIOS
manual for navigation through the settings.

Before you check to see if you have TPM, PTT,
or fTPM, you’ll first want to upgrade your motherboard and UEFI BIOS firmware
(if applicable). Sometimes motherboard manufacturers will add specific features
that will allow you to access these settings. To do this, go to the motherboard
manufacturer’s website and download the necessary files. More often than not,
the files you download will also include specific instructions for installing
and upgrading.

Through Windows 10

If you’re currently signed in to Windows, you
can go directly to your UEFI via the Advanced Startup menu within Windows
Settings.

Hold the Windows key and press X to pull up the Quick Link menu, then select Settings.

Type Advanced, click Change advanced startup options, then select Restart Now.

When the blue Choose an option window appears, choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, followed by UEFI Firmware Settings.

Your PC will reboot directly to your UEFI BIOS.

On startup

You can also get into your UEFI to change your TPM settings when you first turn on your PC. This requires you to press the BIOS key command. Once you’re in your UEFI BIOS, you can then update the TPM settings. The UEFI key command differs from motherboard to motherboard, but it will typically be F1, F2, F12, Esc, or Delete. Refer to the motherboard’s manual for more details.

More often than not, your TPM settings will be somewhere in your Advanced or Security settings. As always, check out the UEFI BIOS manual for more navigation instructions and tips.

Convert BIOS / MBR to UEFI / GPT without reformatting – MBR2GPT tool | Prepare for Windows 11

Enable Secure Boot

Secure Boot is typically disabled on new
machines simply because you may want to install a different OS or set up a
“dual-boot” system.
