Electric guitar and acoustic guitar string materials are much different. While they both typically have the same steel core, the material wound around the core is different. The average string gauge also plays a relatively important factor.

Let’s go over the differences between the two. One consideration is the string gauge. Standard acoustic gauges and electric gauges are pretty different, so it’s good to check individual string gauges if you’re going to do a swap. If this is the case, you may have to buy individual strings.

Electric guitar

Electric guitar strings are typically made of steel, nickel/steel alloy, pure nickel, or other ferromagnetic material because these materials are best at producing electrical signals from the magnetism of your guitar pickups.

Electric guitar string gauge

The electric guitar string gauge is often lighter, with the standard factory string gauge being about .009 or .010. Lighter string gauges require less tension, which makes bending the strings easier. It also requires less pressure to produce a note.

How to Choose Electric Guitar Strings

Learn more about how to choose the best guitar strings for you.

Acoustic guitar

Acoustic guitar strings are commonly made of brass or different varieties of bronze. Since these strings don’t rely on the magnetic vibration from pickups underneath the strings, these materials give your acoustic a warmer tone and allow the guitar to resonate more.

You might be asking yourself, “But what about acoustic-electric guitars?” Acoustic-electric guitars have piezo pickups that rely on pressure, not magnetism, to produce the electrical signal, so the pressure caused by the string vibration is what triggers the pickup.

Acoustic guitar string gauge

Acoustic string gauges are larger; the factory gauge is usually .012 or so, requiring more tension for the strings to vibrate. Also, thicker gauges may not sit in the nut properly. Thicker gauges have a larger vibrating mass, which helps your acoustic guitar’s wood resonate.

Strings and guitar specifications

The way your guitar is set up will determine whether you can put electric guitar strings on your acoustic guitar or acoustic strings on your electric. Things like the action, depth of the guitar’s nut slot, and the break angle and tension will all play a role.

Action

Many guitarists want the action on their electric and acoustic guitars to be as low as possible while making sure there isn’t any buzz. Most acoustic guitars come with heavier string gauges right out of the box, which means they’re already set up for use with heavier string gauges. Alternatively, most electric guitars are set up for use with a lighter gauge. So, if you want to put a complete set of lighter-gauge electric strings on your acoustic guitar, it will require a setup.

Guitar Setup Part 2: Setting Action

Guitar nut slot depth

The slot depth on an acoustic guitar nut is typically wider, deeper, and thicker than its electric counterpart to accommodate the heavier-gauge strings that acoustic guitars use. If you were to put .009-gauge electric strings on an acoustic guitar, the guitar would be more prone to buzz and intonation issues since the string sits deeper in the nut slot. Conversely, if you were to put larger-gauge acoustic strings on an electric guitar, the strings won’t sit as deeply, which can also contribute to intonation issues and cause the string not to ring as much.

Guitar nut damage

If you use very light-gauge electric strings (.009 and lower) on an acoustic guitar with larger nut slots for an extended period, the strings will begin to create grooves in the nut slots. While that won’t necessarily damage the guitar, you’ll run into buzzing and intonation issues.

If you’re using heavier acoustic strings (.012 or higher) and are trying to fit them on an electric guitar with nut slots that haven’t been optimized for larger gauge strings, it can potentially crack the nut.

String tension

String tension plays another critical role in the sound and playability of electric guitar strings on an acoustic guitar. As mentioned above, acoustic guitar strings require more tension (typically measured in pounds per linear inch of pressure) since they use higher-gauge strings. The less string tension there is, the more you must wind to get it to pitch.

Guitar string tension charts

Here are string tension charts from some of the most popular guitar string manufacturers. However, there are a few caveats. The material on acoustic strings is less magnetic, so the output will be much lower. While it may give you a warmer tone, you’d need to adjust your amp and effects accordingly to counterbalance the low output. Nickel/bronze may be an exception, but while it can provide a bit more output, nickel is a non-ferrous material.

Also, since electric strings require less tension (mainly if you use .009 or lower), your acoustic guitar needs to go through an entire setup to accommodate. With all that setup, it’s probably not advantageous to slap acoustic strings on your electric.

Acoustic Guitar Setup – Setting Up An Acoustic Guitar

Using electric strings on an acoustic guitar

When it comes to putting electric strings on an acoustic guitar, there’s a little debate. Some acoustic guitarists swear by electric strings, as they can give the acoustic guitar a much brighter tone, while others much rather prefer the warm sound of acoustic strings.

Remember, a big thing to consider is the string gauge. If the string gauge is too small, you may get a bit of buzz. If you’d like to try this, then you may need to experiment with different gauges on individual strings, particularly the lower strings.

How To Intonate An Electric Guitar

Bonus: Acoustic strings on archtop (hollowbody) guitars

Archtop guitars (also referred to as hollowbody guitars) are entirely hollow. However, they also have the magnetic pickups used in electric guitars. This is a unique situation; you could go either way since these guitars are traditionally used for particular genres (jazz, big band, blues). So, your choice of strings comes down to the style of music you’re playing and personal preference.

With a good archtop, acoustic guitar strings are a solid choice if you want it to be loud acoustically. Think early swing music, big band, ’20s and ’30s music, and non-electric guitarists. The benefit is that they give clarity to “thumpy” rhythm parts. However, just like standard acoustic strings on an electric guitar, it won’t be as loud, clear, or bright as the electric (ferrous) string counterpart.

Related content

How to restring an acoustic guitar

How to restring an electric guitar

[7
60447,117191,333438,59552,333439
143182,142868,142860

202712

<meta name="description" content="In this guide, we’ll discuss the difference between acoustic guitar strings and electric guitar strings, hear what they sound like, and ultimately answer the question, Can I use electric guitar strings on my acoustic guitar?
