There are a few different connection types on the Model D: CV, MIDI, and USB. If you’re using the Model D with other external MIDI hardware or synthesizers, it can’t be at the end of the MIDI signal chain because it doesn’t have a MIDI OUT port.

Let the Model D warm up

Before you start playing, you’ll first need to power on the synth and let it sit for about 15 minutes or so. It may take a little longer, depending on the room temperature. This is because the Model D has analog circuits that need to warm up to operating temperature and tuned performance. We have also found that it’ll need to be warmed up for the Square LFO to be used as a trigger.

Turn everything down.

Connect the Model D’s output to the input of a device like a mixer, keyboard amp, or powered speaker and let it warm up.

Make sure you know the input device’s type of signal, as using the incorrect output jack may result in pops or may damage your equipment.

If using a MIDI controller, connect it to the MIDI IN port. If you’re using it within a synth chain, connect it via the MIDI THRU.

Set the MIDI channel you’ll be playing on, using the dip switches on the back. See the diagram below for the MIDI channel dip switch positions.

Once everything is connected, turn everything up and start playing!

Calibrating the Model D

Just like many other synths, analog circuitry can ‘drift’ with temperature, time, and the age of the Model D. So, to keep it performing flawlessly, you should check and perform occasionally. You can calibrate three different settings: Pitch CV, oscillators, and Octave Range. Calibration requires you to open up the device and adjust the circuits, so if you don’t feel comfortable doing this, please a certified tech perform the calibration.

Behringer Model D Oscillator Calibration Guide

Creating a sound on the Model D

Once you have everything set up and connected, let’s create a sound! The patch we’ll be providing should sustain a note, and it uses one patch cable connected from the LC GATE jack to the first LFO jack in the mixer section. This patch will produce a sound without needing to hook up and configure a MIDI keyboard with it. If you are using a MIDI keyboard, you won’t need the patch cable.

This is a basic sound, and we’ll go through the settings, section by section (left to right), but once you’ve dialed it in, feel free to adjust the controls more to get the sound you want!

TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE: If you’re having issues with getting sound out with a MIDI keyboard, this patch is an excellent way to isolate the problem from MIDI settings on the Model D and the MIDI source.
