While you can format it on your computer, it\u2019s recommended to format it\ndirectly on the MODX for full compatibility. Whenever you perform a\nfirmware update, all user sounds and settings will be erased and reverted to\nfactory defaults, just like when performing a factory reset. Follow these steps\nto back up MODX data onto the newly formatted USB thumb drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If applicable, connect the\nformatted USB thumb drive to the back of your MODX.<em><\/em><\/li><li>Press the <strong>Utility <\/strong>button or\nthe <strong>gear <\/strong>icon on the touch panel and then press <strong>Contents<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Content type<\/strong>, select <strong>Backup\nFile<\/strong>, and then choose <strong>Store\/Save<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select the USB drive on the screen\nand press <strong>Save New File<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Rename the file and then press <strong>Done<\/strong>.\n<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Update-the-MODX-firmware\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Update the MODX firmware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the thumb drive has\nbeen formatted, and the user data has been backed up, you can update the\nfirmware on your MODX. Before you update the firmware, it\u2019s good practice to\ncheck the currently installed firmware and compare it to the latest one listed on\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/products\/music_production\/synthesizers\/modx\/downloads.html\">MODX download page<\/a>. Please note that Yamaha lists the download as \u201cOS Updater.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press the <strong>Utility <\/strong>button or\npress the <strong>gear <\/strong>icon on the touch panel.<\/li><li>Press <strong>Settings<\/strong>, then select <strong>System<\/strong>.\nThe firmware version installed on your MODX will be listed on the bottom of the\nscreen labeled \u201cMODX Firmware Version : *.**.*(c)2018 Yamaha Corporation.\u201d<\/li><li>Go\nto the Firmware\/Software section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/products\/music_production\/synthesizers\/modx\/downloads.html\">MODX download page<\/a>, and locate the latest OS Updater file.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Download-the-firmware-file\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Download the firmware file<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\nconfirm the MODX firmware requires updating, you can begin the update. You\u2019ll\nneed to connect the USB thumb drive you formatted on the MODX to your computer,\ndownload the firmware, and then transfer the files to the drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Navigate to the Firmware\/Software section on the <a href=\"https:\/\/usa.yamaha.com\/products\/music_production\/synthesizers\/modx\/downloads.html\">MODX download page<\/a>, and download the OS Updater V*.** .zip file.<\/li><li>Connect the newly formatted USB thumb drive to your computer.<\/li><li>Go to your Downloads folder, extract the .pgm firmware file, then copy and paste the file onto the USB thumb drive.<ul><li><strong>PC<\/strong>: Right-click the .zip file, select <strong>Extract all\u2026<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Extract<\/strong>. Open the uncompressed folder, then copy and paste only the .pgm file to the connected USB thumb drive.<\/li><li><strong>Mac<\/strong>: Double-click the .zip file, open the uncompressed folder, then copy and paste only the .pgm file to the connected USB thumb drive.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Update-the-MODX-firmware\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Update the MODX firmware<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\" class=\"has-background\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: Do not power off, disconnect the\nUSB thumb drive, or press any buttons or keys while the MODX firmware is\ninstalling. Doing so may result in a corrupt installation or brick the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the firmware files\nare on the USB thumb drive, you can update the MODX. The process takes\napproximately 3\u20135 minutes, so be patient while it\u2019s being installed. Follow\nthese steps to complete the firmware update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Power off the MODX. If applicable, connect the formatted USB thumb drive with the firmware file to the unit.<\/li><li>Press and hold the <strong>Cursor Up<\/strong> and <strong>Utility <\/strong>buttons while powering on the MODX, then let go once the Update screen appears. The MODX will now search for the firmware file. <\/li><li>After you see <strong>Finished <\/strong>on the display, turn the unit off and back on again. <\/li><li>Check the firmware version to confirm it has been successfully updated.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"How-to-restore-MODX-user-data\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">How to restore MODX user data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything has been\ncompleted, the last step is to restore any MODX user data you may have backed\nup before installing the firmware.
